by an open organization.
Valentine Short said his • opinion was that it
consisted in doing things openly, above - bostdi
and in day4ight. He believed in Americans ruling
America, in,a capitation tax and in an extension
of the naturalization laws. Orf those principles,
..nativa Americans ought to go into an'open coun

.The Convention was about to adjoura.when
Mr. Patterson remarked that there was anoth
er matter deserving of attention. It is• well
-known to all that there is another organisation,
a new style of Americans, having various grades
of membffrthip km. Ilona of these men be nom
inated at ma State Convention and elected Canal
Commissioner, no one out of that organization
will stand the slightest chance, even of
ap

- Mr. Headanson also reprobated what he called
the not kind of Americanism. He moved the

ht. S. Johns.wanted' to know what this new
Americanism is--what are its grades—what dis

Mr. Henderson replied- that he considered it
invidiona to make any distinction between the
eons of Irishmen Or Germans and those who could
datetheir genealogy back to the Revolution. He
believed only in the cpustimi of American birth
.
o
Mr.. Patterson said we had 'learned by the pa
pers few days ego that these Americans of the
tenth generation bad to take an ebligation in,re
gird to Slaiery.. Now, there is no danger of
our delegates, but Philadelphia taintimately ant

these eastern pro-slavery new style of Americans
' coming upon us at Harrisbargh to get a man
of their stripe nominated for Canal Commissioner.
Bet will we vote far him 7 • '
Cries of "no !", no !" .
The Chairman Warned the delegates against
"thee' Philadelphians—they will gall body and
soul for an office, and wemust meet them with a

all. He wanted pure Americanism—no slavery
or. antialivery--ne temperance or anti-temper
-Mr. Foster-raid he would rote for no loan for
Canal eommisaioner who was not in favor of an
open organization, or wbo has gone into any other
orgenization for the purpose of getting office.
The. Chairman again urged opposition to an
organization • which • proscribed a man who bad
not taken a - certain degree. They will play foul,
for they tried to gull us last year—
' Valentine Short—They did, too (Laughter.)
