EASTON, (Pa.,) Monday, April 80,1856.
TheNion. A. H. Reeder, Governor of Kaunas,
arrived here to-day from the West, and meta very
enthusiastiO reception from his friends and
neighbors. He reached Phillipsburg at noon,
and was there met and escorted to the Court
House square, in Easton, by a largo concourse
of the Citizens of all parties, accompanied boils
Easton Bud. On arriving at the Court House) ,
Gov. Reeder was welcomed by the citizens with
hearty cheers, and a formal welcome then ex
, tended to him, in an eloquent and impressive'
speech, by the Hon. J. M. Porter, who compll
mented Gov. Reeder' on the manly and cones.'
geous as wall as able mariner in which he bad'
discharged this duties of his difficult andlaspon- I
sibbeothee. He went into a hasty narrative of
the growth and progress of the Slave question,
attlibutinp its dangerous and threatening chat-
aeter at the present time to the fanatical Aboli
tionists at the North, but admitting also that
SlaVery men had in their turn become as fanati
cal and wrong - -as the Abolitionists themselves.
'He 'went through the old routine of apology for
} the South, saying that they had Slavery entailed
upon them, pad asserting in full the broadeit
„Pro -Slavery' claims, declared that Goy. Reeder
had done his duty ably, and that he would and
should be sustained both Ely Pennsylvania and
the country at large. a
Goy. Reeder, in reply, expressed in feeling and
eloquent terms the greatful impression made up
on him by the warm and enthusiastic' reception
given to him by so large an assembly of his fel
low-citizens. Ho referred to the reports of fraud
and outrage upon the part of Slavery men in the
Kansan election, and emphatically confirmed the
very worst statement of them which had preceded
hie arrival. lie said hie opinion on the subject
of popular sovereignty had undergoneno ohmage,
but that the conduct of the people of the border
Counties of the North of Missouri had astonished
and mimed him by their reckless disregard of
all laws, compacts and constitutions; that the
Territory of Kaman ' in her late election, had
been invaded bye regular organized army, armed
' to the teeth, who took possession of their ballot
boxes and made a Legislature to suit the purpose
of the Pro-81avery party. Kansas was subdued
subjugated and conquered by armed men from
Mu' semi, but her citizens were resolved never
to give up the fight for their freedom and the
independence of their soil from foreign control or
interference. The State of Missouri would be
called upon to disavow all sympathy
th with these th
border ruffians. if she refused, e Sou

tywould devolve
upon the North to take up the atter so that the
rights of her eons who had settled in Kansas in
the faith of solemn compacts, a all be vindicated
and sustained. He declared t at the accounts
of the fierce outrages end wild T Olefteell perpetra
ted at the °leaflets, published In the northern
papers, were in no wise exagerated. He con
cluded by saying that Kansas was now a con
quered conutry—eonqured by force of arms—but
that her citizens were resolved never to yield their
rights, and relied upon the North to aid them
Nydemorustrationv of public sentiment and ell
other legal means until they shall be fully and
triumphantly vindicated.
During his speech Gov. Reeder was frequently
and enthsiantically cheered by the large audience
present.
From the lawman (Hroicre) Tribune.
Kansas Leniaintnre in liesains la Mlsenari!
"A majority of the members returned to oar
Legislature, met at the Barris Rouse at West
port, Mo., Tuesday night of last week. At the
lest accounts they were holding regular sessions
et the Shawbee Mission. Johnson Ii Speaker,
Clerks and Sergeants-at-arms are also elected.,
They deliberate with closed doors. They talk
strongly of setting the Governor's authority at
defiance and legislating independently. Let them
work! They will soon find a different use for'
hoop than that for which it was used at Leaven
worth on the day of election. There is ouch a
thing, we believe, as TREASON_Y-- ----
This Is certainly an extracrdinary statement;
sod it would be deemed incredible but for the
equally extraordinary facts connected with the
election of the men who &relent, legielating for
Kansas in Missouri. .After Mae Invasion of the
Territory by the horde of limits* vagabonds who
have maimed the task of forcing Slavery upon
Kansas, no outrage will IM deemed too great for
them to perpetrate. Nor are we disposed to re
gret this now illustration of (their spirit and par
pose. It Is an appropriate addenda to the die
graceful chapters already written; and will has-
ten the crisis of this crusade against Freedom. I
The conduct of these Missouri banditti is not
merely illegal. It indicates an infatuation sari:
diculous as it is disgraceful. What can they ex ! I
peat to accomplish by • course of
,proceed i ng 50
alifttly at war with precedent law? They can
not hope to have their conduct either acquiesced
in by the People of Kansas or approved by Con
gross. And without the latter, no aot of theirs,
as Legislators, tau hare any legal force. Do
they desire to rake en Issue with the Gear
oral government, as the basis of future ac
tion I Their conduct seems inexplicable upon
soy other hypothesis. And if this is their de
sire, they could have adopted no course more
likely to a cootoplis It caot ap
prove what they nav h e
done, nor n ( const itu ted s es
a majority of those are who claim to have been
clothed with legislative powers) can it recognise ,
as legal any thing they may do.
What may grow out of this conflict of authori
ty, it is not difficult to foresee. One or the other

DIIIICOLICTION 07 GOLD.—The United States
Economist intimates the amount of gold furnished
to the commercial world during the sir. yeirs
since the now mines were disoovered at $400,000,-

proved to be vary different from the anticipations
of many financiers, - who predicted a great imme

We ask especial attention to a letter enanoth

facts euppressed by the press of that town. In
deed we have no words suffttiently strong to em-;
PitaWttle the comment which each thing! 0%111
forth; namely, maltreatment of slaves by a lady'
of wealth and position—maltreatment so exquis
itely brutal, that even the conscience of a Plan,-
community could not legally overlook it, though
the despotism over the local journals prevented
the latter from bringing it to light. As a defen
der of the poor, humble, and voiceless, wit literal
in the stead of the cowed Kentucky erne, and
on. authority for whose on-atoms we can Vouch,
and which we have fortified by special inithiries
made upon the spot, we present to oar readers
the suppressed circumstances in' ntteittlon?
The following artzeubstantially the facts in re
lation to this case of cruelty, as will be found in
the letter of our correspondent, having bee giv
en in evidence before the Grand Jury of Bo urbon
Co.: The parties presented were Alpheus Lewis,
and Margaret, his wife, the' hitter said to have
inherited a larger estate thati*y other person
In the county. One of the vicfts of the lady's
cruelty Is • slave named Barth, a green wotttan,
I reported as the mother of children. was
] stripped entirely naked by the dietetical of Mrs.
Lewis, and her heels tied up to a tree about'four
]or five feet from the groan& The mistress then
directed one negrd roan to force a pump, and a
nitre; wounds to direct • stream of Gold water
from a hose against the -helpless slave; while the
lady pelted her with atones till she was tired,
and then burned her badly' ih several places, in
cluding the most sensitive parts of the body, With
hot irons. The sufferings of the other Blare were
of equal intensity, Ind, as similar in their-na
ture, are not so minutely described by oar eor
reapondent.
The isw of Kentucky provides that slaves cru
elly maltreated shall, be sold by the order of
a court. The accusation against Lewis 'and
-wife being clearly established, the slaves Were
sold ; but the law being defective even
in
the view of slave-ethics, the victims were
bought back by the oppressor, and are nOw in
parts unknown. In justice to the neighbors, It
must be said!that they acted well in the pre:Di
-les, and threaten not to abide by a rottenis* If
there be a repetition of such manillas; The sale
of the maltreated slaves - was simply adierbited
by sticking a written notice the CoMrt-House
door—the original manuscript of which is no*
in our possession.
The reason our correspondent affords why no
farther publicity was given to the sale of these
M
valuable slaves, and why the entire case ightier',
suppressed by the local papers, is plainly true.
A Kentucky editor has been Waylaid by the rt
latives Of the notorious Mat. Ward, because Abe'
latter was described by' him *as "the great un
hung;" so the journalists of Bourbon County
have kept eeeret the hideous facts of torture we
detail, for fear that influential relatives _might
maim or murder them! Fortunately for ,the
hopes of rho country, there are elsewhere press
es which are not accessible to such restraint, and
where tho cause of the feeble slid the Wronged
-can find an audible and fearless voice.
This is not a solitary case; apart from those
moned in Uncle Tom's Cabin - .:=611 of them
foundedon fact—we remember that some twenty
years ago a wealthy and accomplished lady of
New-Orleens had a regular torture-chamber, Ate
ted up with a variety of devilish utensils with
] which to wreak her malignity, upon. her slaves;
and when her hotintinis forced, a hapless wretch
] was found in cum of these machines, a metallic
I cap fitting the bead, with a arrow in the centre
pressing down upon the skull and brain of the
victim. But the cruelties of Mrs. 'Lewis, if less
ingenious and complicated, seem even more in
human and revolting. Even in Kentucky, with
its comparatively high degree of education and
religion such is Slavery: such its effects on no=

To extend this system, thit energies of our Na
tional Government have been vent, and the revo-
