$lOO,OOO AT Fen° wealthy gentle
man named Bailee, from Maryland, arrived here
some two weeks ago upon a visit to his friends,
and became ti guest attbe Carlton House. Ho
fell into the habit of visiting the gambling estab
lishments of Broadway, and. became at Faro a
"desperate better." On some occasions the [har
pers would play the game in such a meaner as
to let the intended victim win four or firs hun
dred dollars. When satisfied that their . custo
mer
was fit to be plucked, operations commens.
en in earnest. He often risked on "one turn"
several Ave hundred dollar "chips," amonating.
in the aggregate to some $3OOO or $4OOO by the
Mere drawing of one card from a little tin box,
in the handed the "dealer." .In this way the
poor man persisted, until he was fleeced, at last,
of nearly every dollar- he possessed. We have
baegassured that hlsloss will probably exceed one
hundred thousand dollars—all in the short orate
of a week or ten dart:
During the past forty-eight hours Mr. B. has
been in a state of great excitement. He became
quite unconscious on Saturday, and made his way
to the home of Cindcrelia Marshall, in Leonard
street, there-he woe cared fir. At S o'clock •••
the - evening he was pinch worse, indeed crazy at
intervals. A messenger wee - dispatched by the
landlady for a doctor?, but before he arrived Mr.
Bailee attempted to destroy himself by swallowing
aix.otutoes of laudanum from a bottle, which he
tarried inhis coat pocket The attendenceof Dr.
Clark, Dr. Bradshaw and Dr. Bacon was forth
with procured. The stomach pomp was used
freely, and every effort was made to arouse him,
not unsuccessfully. Last evening Mr. B. was
lying very weak, but the physicians were of
moths nnnaimons opinion thatlie *mad survive.
The names of the parties who have been 'in
strumental in robbing this Marylander at Faro
Beata and;other gaming places, have not yet
been made known.—N. Y. Daily Tana.
