PITTSBURGH GAZETTE
AY MORNING, APRIL 28, Mb
ligusl of Counterfeiter..
The arrest of six expert counterfeiters was ef
fooled in our city yestaMay mornining, by Ser
geant Miff and officers Ross and Underhill,
i
attachei of he Jefferson Police Court, the par
ticulars of hicli are as follows:—During the
past week, i ormatiou was re:civet! by Justioe
Brennan an Sergeant Martin, of his Court,
which led th to to suspect a ganger Philadelphi
lr
ens, who woo suspected of being engag
t ed in the
manufacture of counterfeit notes of the denom
inations of $ 's, s3's, ss'e and slo's, purporting
to bo tho genuine issues of various banking in
stitution and elsewhere.
It was anticipated that some of these rogues
would come cn to the city, to make arrangements
With °there 'or passing off the forgeries. Ac
cordingly,t police officers kept a close watch
upon the Ph elphia trains for the arrival of a
confederate med John S. Good, of whom they'
had aperfee description. Finally, the individ
ual
ual made his ppearanoo in town, and to his as
tonishment as taken into custody by officer
Roes, shortly after alighting from the cars. In
possession of this prisoner there was found a
large package of forged five dollar bills on the
Chemical Bank of Broadway, and a quantity of
other spurious notes, all of which were so well ,
executed as to deceive the best judges of cent- '
terfeit money.
This successful operation gave the Weeks re
newed
encouragement, and they labored assidu- '
ously night and day to. detect and bring to jus
tice the balance of the dangerous gang, which,
we are pleased to say, has been accomplished.—
It was next ascertained that a female, residing
at No. 42 Baxter street, named Ellen Taggart,
was the principal accomplice of the forgers in
Putting the false lanes into airculatiOn among
tho retail dealers in all parts of the city. By
direction of Justiceßronnan,sentinels were placed
in the vicinity of this woman's hoagie i with a
view of watching all parties entering said prem
ises or leaving the same. Meanwhile one of the
emptopee, of Mrs. Taggart, named Cornelia
Thompson, was caught in the act of attempting
to pass one of_ the forged "flees" on the Chemi
cal, at a fancy dry goods store in Chatham street..
When taken into custody, she revealed the se
cret in regard to the "head.quarters." Thither
the offioors pro ceded without delay and captured 1
the principal , Mrs. Taggart,) Ann Boyle, Dandy
O'Mara, alias 'Captain of the Hound," and an
old acquaintanise of the police called "Philadel
phia Frank." The entire building wisrimmedi- '
ately searched by order of the Justice,' and the
officers seized numerous other packages of this'
counterfeit mo ey, which had just been put from
the sheets and awed through the last khemical '
process, prior o pushing it off on the public.—
The primmer., with their effects, were 'brought
to the police o ce lest oveniog, and committed
by Justice Brelinan to await further action in the
matter. ' A pOrtion of the counterfeit money
retied at Mrs. Taggart's residence, bad bees re
ceived by express from Philadelphia only about
au hour previous to the officers making the de
scent.
The police officers visited the Chemical Bank
daring the afternoon, and the President pronoun
ced one of the forged sts notes yrininns, which
shows conclusively that the steel pla e must have
been engraved by a very skillful workman; and
the penmanship of the signatures rerouted was e,
pc simile.
Annexcd is a description of the conoterfei
and worthless notes:

The Lend= Times lays before its readers the
particulars of ir horrible affair, which recentry
occurred near the Dutch !settlement of Transvaal,
at the Cape of cod Hope, and which can only
ho paralleled in troeity among the achievements
of modern tins y the exploit of Marshal St Ar

' , ln the case a the cape of Good Hope, the
Caller Indians ti murdered, in October last, un
der oircumstan of great barbarity, ten or
twelve men and men of the Dutch settlement
Immediately General Pretorions raised an army
of fire hundred rain, and, accompanied by Com
mander General Potgietter, proceeded on an ex= to revenge the bl ood of the victims.—
After an absence of several weeks, they reached
BOOM remarkable subterranean caverns, half a
mile in length, and from three to five hundred
feet in width, whe w the Caffrey had entrenched
themselves. Upon Ma arrival at this spot, Gene-
I nil Pretorious at pled to blast tbe rocks above
the caverns, and thus crush the savages beneath
the ruins. The peculiar character of _the stoup,
however, rendered this scheme impracticable,
and he then staticused his men around the months
of the caves, and built up walls in front of them.
After a few days, any of the women and chil
dren were driven out by Manger and thirst from
their hiding places, and were allowed to escape;
bat every man who came forth.was shot dead by
their rifles. On the 17th of November, at the
close of a siege of three weeks, the besiegers,
seeing no Signs of life, entered the caverns„ and
the silence within, together with the horrible odor
arising from the bodies of the dead, told Low ef
fectually their object had been accomplished.—
More than nine hundred Caffrea bad boon shot
down at the mouths of the caverns, and a much
greater number bad perished by slow degrees,
suffering all the horrors of etarration in the
gloomy recesses within."

George W. Hollister while engaged with a par

It seems that the party with which Mr. Hol-1

Geo. W. Case, of Pittsburgh, Pa, Director
the Western Division of the Adams Express b

The Adams Express Company, of which Mr.
Case has been elected President, is a joint' stock
