Lsmuuvrin SAULlllll.—Thsprsatioe hereto
fore has been to pay the members of the legisl' s
tate $3,00 per day; and • law of the State pro
vides that this rate shall run only for one bun
dled days, the pay after tbat period _ being
restricted to $1,60 per day. The present legisla
ture seems determined to upset all this. By some
curious freak of nomenclature it has been called
an "Asseriean Reform" legislature; and by way
of earning the title one of its pet measures has
been to assign its members a salary instead of a
per diem allowance. The salary proposed, of
course, Is much larger than the per dims would
amount to: else how *Quid it be a reform?
A bill was at first introduced making-the leg
islative Miles a salaried one and the salary $6OO.
But there was some danger that the Governor ,
would veto it, in that shape, and so it, has been
smuggled into the Appropriationbill ac reported
to the House. In this shape is is thought that
it can b e made to go through, and the Governor
lee not likely to veto an Appropriation bill.
The legialature, as It now stands, le the eln
bodiment of Know Bothinglsm, and Is is per-
Mips well that the people of the State have been
compelled to endure Its indiction. They would
not otherwise hare known what Know Nothing
ism really is. The members appear to labor un
der the conviction that this Is their last chance at
the public crib, and hence they seem disposed to
make a good use of their time. We think the
best thing they can do for the Commonwealth is
to show theoloven foot In all its deformity, and
rob and plunder all they can daring their brief
lease of power. The days of such "Reform"
soon come to en end.
When we recall to mind the hot that this new
party was deemed necessary because the old
parties had grown "to corrupt," and that Its ao
oession to office was bailed as the dawn of • new
and brighter day, when the people should rale
and honesty bear sway, it made a ails odd to
hear an "American Reform" Mfg, such as the
Schuylkill Jtissr's Jot:ma, talk thus of its party
rep_reseniatires at the lest of government:
"It does seem that the very rams of oorrap. '
Son in the State is now banded together at Her
' risburg—that many have assumed the guise of
deuriantins, the more effectually to accomplish
'their objects—and thus lead on the honest por
tion of the Americans .to rain lend destramien."
Considering that the new party is only • few
months old and that it obtained public confidence
because people thought it would be honest, we
must say that it has followed vary eaddenlyin
the wake of Its illustrious redeemers. W h en it
becomes the very essence of amaption in less
than • year, what would it collie to If it could
prolong its existence 1

wards as made by the judges, was as follows
Paean, dem., 9,497 ; Taylor, N. 8290 :—to

stood thus, for Supreme .43Ctirt ; Norris, dem.,
6,181; Owen, Repablican, 11,658:—total, 17,687.
This shows the vote this spring to have been
only 100 more than last falL If the; vote for
Justices of the Paths in the two disputed wards
be taken as the basis, the totals show 72 totem
more now than in October tut. This goes very
far to dissipate the allegations of fried and il

plausible when it is known that in twelve out of
