LONGBOW Rxravvres.—'-California journals have
for some time put been bringing us some' re
markable stories of the "prolific treasures of the
Kern river gold mines, but the California Chro
nicle, of March ith, publishes a story which cer
tainly defies all further competition. It is con
tained in a letter which is said to havobeen found
among the effects of a grocer who suddenly sold
out his store and emigrated to the new mines.—
Tins letter is dated Jones' Camp, Bern River,
February 14th, and signed A. Seymour Smythe.
It advised the grocer to sell out at once and re
pair immediately to' said Smythe, with a good
supply of stone chisels and drills, hammers and
kegs of powder, in arder,to share with him in a
streak" of good fortune which seems to have half
demented him. In fact Mr. Smythe says that be
has hit upon a rock of gold; the value of which
he roughly estimates at from two to ten millions
of dollars, and as such rooks don't turn up every
day, we cannot refrain from, giving the reader
Smythe's own account of the affair. If the let
ter be anything near the - truth, this poor rich
man was in the position of the fabled Oriental,'
who, in the midst of a great desert, found him
self in the possession of &wagon load, but starv
ing to death. Here, however, Is Smythe's Ad
venture:
' , This Is the way of it. Four weeks ago heft
Fort Miller to see the Kern River country, - and
with little thought of mining. Well, I came and=
saw that the miners were doing pretty well, but
I found no claim rich enough to fait me. I was
makineready to leave two weeksbefore MondaY,
and on Sunday I went out hunting. - On the, edge
of a little stream styled Polulume Creek I shirt s
hare, and he managed to run off toward the
mountain about two miles off.l was out of
caps and could not shoot him again. Be waa full
In sight all the time, and I followed him through
the oak opening, and the greater part of the time
he was little-more than ten feet ahead of me.—
Jost at the foot of the mountain .I emcceeded, af
ter many attempts, in hitting him with a club.
I was thoroughly tired, and laid down in the
shade of alarge rock. Alter I got rested, I was
so hungry that I kindled afire, dressed My hare,
and fixed him up before the fire tO roast.
"While he was there doing goal, I sat down
and began to pick at the rock with my butcher!s
knife. I had picked away for some minutes,
hardly looking at the rook, 'Shen all at once
observed s little gold in it. I jumped Zip; and
by Jupiter! the whole • boulder—about- ten-liiist
high and wide, and twice as long—was limey
with gold! In one aide there was a plane twit
feet square where the quartz was richer than
any I oversaw in San Francisco assay offices. I
picked out $2O with my knife in half an -hour.
danced like , a crazy man; and if 'L had- not been
afraid, I would have yelled worse than a thous
and Indians at awar dance. I can't liken my feel,
loge to anything I ever felt on earth. At. first
I felt seared at the thought hair rich I would be
and my heart rose In my throat; then 1 felt as
though I had been chased hard by the devil, and
had managed to get inside of heaven's gate, just
as Satan was about to catch me by the coat tail.
It was not long before I got over my- happy
spell. I had no money: 110 tools; provisions were
high; I had no friends and no acqualnttuzies. I
ate my hare, and stayed at the - rook thiekteg,
till it was too late to go home. It got-4- cold; I
I laid down and tried to sleep: but I could not; I'
got up and walked back and Bath," thinking all
night. It was a ierrifie, miserable night '
the morning -when the sun shone upon!,
the rock, I was happy again. I eatimate ita sal- I
ue at not less than $2,000,000, possibly 0,000,- ,
000,000 or $10,000,000, it might even be!-'
Now Bob, don't laugh at me. I was desperate
ly wild with joy. I, who bad been a dreamer'
and a poor devil eo long, wan to -be rich -1 to he
a king! to be able to carry into execution all the
daring schemes which have so often brought the
ridicule 'of the stick-hi-the-muds upon me! I
was at last to be able to go home and'clalin Ro
setta, under the hard conditions claimed by yotif
father.
'Towards neon I got hungry. I went up the
side of the mountain to some pine trees, in the
sides of which the squirreha bad placed acorns in
holes made by wood-peckers la search of worms.
I dug oat a lot of acorns, carried them down to
the creek, ate them with floe pepper-gram, grow
ing alongside of a spring. I went back to the
rock and staid there dila o'clock; studying what
I should do. I could not resolve. I then went
to my camp about , eight miles off. The folks
wanted to know what was the matter. taaid I
had wounded a buck and gotlost in chasitighitn.
The next monlitig I found that my horse hid
been stolen. I bought some provision, another
revolver, and a. piek.and shovel and pea, and
went back.. About, tO yards from the rook was
a trail upon which miners pass every day.
...At night • I went to work to cut off a corner
of the rock, but I soon broke the pick so that it
was useless. I could find no chisel or hammer.
People got suspicious of .me. Several followed
me. One man found me sitting , down not 100
yards from the rock. I got scared. I carried
water In my bucket the whole two miles from
the stream, and made a mud, with which I wash
ed over the whole rock. In doing this I had .to
get 27 buckets of water; .and just that job aline
compelled me to walk 108 miles, and I,wae a.
whole week about it, doing a greater por, tion of
the work at night, and sleeping hi the daytime.
"I am nearly starved out, watching the rock.
I went to mining at Jones' Camp for stew days,
and now am waiting with the greatest impatience
for you to come, with.every preparation deceasa.

eary foreatiying off the rock.
...I am in-, till you come. The rock lain
sight from the traiL Before I washed it, over,.i.
could stand en the trail and see the gold , glitter
• In the sunshine; now the dirty yellow wash
attract attention. What gives me the most pain'
is, that miners make a alert cut by passing with
in ten feet of the rock, and save an ugly 'gully
which starts' jait before it. I must pl ay near
the rock, and I have no money' and no pioide
ions. I have no heart to work, and when Iwant
to mine can got no good diggings,. though other
people are making plenty of money. I amvery
glad that the report of riot' diggings higher up
the river is taking nearly everybody away from
this neighborhoOd. Come immediately, and spare
no expenee.. Bring your . brother John;: and my
eousln, William Tait, who is at York's, on Mar
ket street Wharf. Come-well armed, for if our
secret is found out we may have to tight.

The foliowingletter from an Indiana emigrant
to Kansas appears, under date ' of March 6, in
the St. Joseph Valley Register ' South Bend, Ind.
It shows that the champions of Freedomiu that
State were not unaware of-the peril which im
pended, and the foul play already plotted.
"We expect to have rather a warm time at the
election for our first Legislature, which will be
on the 30th inst. We intend to do all in our'
power to prevent the Missourians 11. m voting,
but we cannot prevent those wit', will 'swear
their votes in. Goy. Reeder is the right kind of
a man. He will appoint mania judges of the
election whoin he knows will oppose all illegal
voting. The census of the Territory - ,bas huen
completed, and showd a larger populatiorithon. •
we bad expected... There. are reported 3,004.
voters, but 'the district 110,' where there were
604 votes polled last fall, only shows 64' voters.
Of these 604 votes, Whitfield, the pro-alavery
candidate for delegate to congress; received 696.
So-you-eau-plainly see how things went last fall.
We have not much bones of ttirrying thei election
now, but intend doing the bisrwe cam If any
