DMITICOGTION OF THE BALLOT BOX Yesterday afternoon a tremendous excitement was stirred up by the news that.there had been .:everate fighting and several men killed in the lierenth Ward. We harried to the scene of ac [ion, and on the way met a gentleman calling "American," - who - I::mself an had scratched Pap Taylor and J. J. Dennis from his ticket, and ho, therefore, we may consider a moderate and • eneible man. He informed us that there had teen savage fighting in the Eleventh Ward. We passed on, and overtook's Know Nothing f lend on,the way to the filoodyEleventh. Hon- deeds of men in express wagons and buggies and on horseback passed furiously along the .treet toward the Mohawk Engine Hanle, where the disturbance was taking place, and the side walks were lined. When near the polls we met a welt known K. N., who paused to converse with the friend we were walking pith, and sta ted that the "Dutch" had been cheating in the Eleventh—that more votes were already polled than there were male resilents in the Ward— that the da/Zot. box would be. destroyed in eons- quince o, the fraudulent Willi. In the fight that occurred about noon a. Mr. Brown was wounded, and the foreman of. Freak Link's - : - Brewery • stabbed in. the langs. - The Wounds of these individuals wore thought to be' hurt. dangerous. Many other persons were severely Rumors of all descriptions were - flying thickly. The K. N.'s Field there bad been fraudulent vo ting: The Dernocnds denied it. The - judges sad clerks of the election protested that every thing had been done on the square, while sundry excited Know Nothings asserted thatlittle Catch boys had been allowed to go up and thrust hand fULl.Of tickets:into the ballot bor. The Germans had a large cannon on J eon', Rill, and were amusing themselves by firing over the town occasionally. The K N.'s having whipped the.Gennsurs at the polls, dis patched a detachment to capture the artillery, which was done without much loss of blood, and the trophy of victory drawn - to the Eleventh Ward polls. The sword of the Commander of the German gun squad was, also, taken, and one of the most-flaming of the titters - flourished it continually,. and shouted until only& hoarse gasp answered the most resolute efforts of bislang& • About the polls when he arrived, was a great crowd, cheering vociferonsly for TLYLOIL Many of them had a little Star Spangled Banner with "Pap Taylor" printed on it fixed' about their hats, and nearly all had the K N. ticket pin ned to their breasts. The multitude seemed to rally round a large banner inscribed "Tama rD. Taylor and hAs nolo Reid."' . . -- From-four tofive o'clock but feri Germans could beeseen exceptupon the outskirts 'of the crowd, and they were very quiet. All of them who had manifested excitement had - left the ground, - being earnestly advised to do so by American friends. - It was evident that the polls were- in possession of L N.'s. -The Judges were urged to :close the door and secure the ballot-box but they refused to do so, consid ering that there was no danger. The Mayor was upon the ground, but he did not seem to understand that the danger was imminent.— 'At intervals of about five minutes, stones and - brickbats flew, briskly :causing uncomfortable sensations in the spectators. Fights were occurring continually. A cry would be raised, a rush made, and presentlysome poor German who had imprudently ventured in to the crowd, or some friend eta German, who has not been enifficiently discreet to hold his tongue, would stagger from- the throng covered with dust, and bleeding. - About the angle formed by Vine street and the Moulton Road, the row was iticessant A num ber of individuals, evidently engaged to do the rough work, charged abort with fiery faces, dus tyand bloody clothes, looking ferocious as mad dogs. • We stood upon a pile of sand opposite the en gine house, and overlooked the scene. We saw One gray beaded man, neatly dressed, run forhis life down ruse street, pursued by half a dozen furious boys, who reekleasly hurled , stones after him.- Actont, rough looking man, in an express wagon, who shouted "Hurrah for Paean," was terribly beaten. A young man of German de scent, described by a bystander as "a very tine ' fellow, quiet and hard working," was whipped unmercifully, and as-he reeled homeward; blind from Wood and dust, the blood running copiously from his- face, ands one eye swollen dreadfully from a blow with a - storie,- an acquaintance of his I family remarked: "There now, that is a shame. His mother.will faint when she sees bias." One sturdy Getman we saw struck fairly in the head 'with a heavy stone, and yet remaining on his feet, -- He was streak repeatedly with colts, but clid not succumb, and made -his escape. About five o'clock s - ruslt was-made by about thirty - men, othiely followed by perhaps three hundred more, for the ballot box. Mayor fleet baker had taken his position iii front of the box, and we saw him for some time struggling to check the moh, and heard his nice - commanding the peace. But he was roughly handled, his clothes being torn, and several reds blows inflicted on his person. A dense crowd pressed about the door— • tall man made several desperate efforts to pass those-who were endeavoring to protect the box, and finally leaped the 'table when the box r4r as Planed, when there was a great sound of splitting wood, occasioned by the crushing of tho chairs and tables—a general shout, and some fifty persons rushed in, or were forced into the engine room. - Casement the-ballot box was thrown out with considerable force, sort %X man on the ahoulder who staid about one third of the dis tenth across the-street it then reached the ground; and was immediately assaulted by Merge number, who stamped it to fragments and scat: tered the tickets kr atid wide.. This sct was per petrabsd under the very folda of the banner in scribed, "James D. Taylor and the whole ticket,"' and the cry of the, mob, as the work was done, *as, "Earriskfrir Pop Taylor - It''was said th al the Ina contained near thirteen hundred ballots, at least ono thousand of which were for Mr. Parana Persons who undertook to bistify the amity of destroying the box, stated that there had :beencheating. permitted- by the Germans, and that the , "Dutch bullies refused dosing the - early. part of the day to-permit any ballots to -be deposited in the box that were not of the Democratic stamp." - .„ One than with a severe cut on- his head, sai d that be had been knocked down because he had stationed himself at the polls and Challenged Gor e= votes. . . The excitement was terrible, and the the Pap Taylor sag, and the cannon captured on Jackson Hill, which bad been loaded with brick bats, were followed dawn the street by a multitude ripe for any outrageous performance whatever.
