We are finigabed by a gerdleman from,f;afaystte
Ind., with tho detalla of it rumor currant in. that
city on Thnriday, whioh tho mind with nor
ror, in 'view of the auffinioga of die party to
whom 'it refers.
On the ISstrugay - Precodinitha Memorable stones
of the 21st ofJanuary, two futilies, nntabering
ten persons, moving from Southern Indiana to
arrived'at Oiford, the county, seat of
Denton county, Ind., about forty miles north
wait f Lafayette with two ox teams, and well
provided with necessaries for the road. They
remained there through the storm, and on Mop
day morning resumed their journey. teat Tues
day morning a man passing over , a prairie, only
about five milea.thm Oxford, ' came upon a sight
which _deed him with horror. e ;
The' eircailes - ortwe oxen, from which the
viscera had been removed, Tay upon' the ground.
Laside'of one of Utem were the, froien bodies of
the four children, and in the other the frozen
corpse of the mother with a nursing Infant at
her breast. Under the now was a heap of ash
es in which the iron of the wagons showed that
the party had broken them up, and burned
everything they had in them, in their effort to
save their lives. Not far from this spot was
found the body of 'the other woman of the par
ty, partly concealed in a snow drill, and near
her, one of the men. The two other men had
not been found.
It Is probable that tho party became inextri
cably involved in the snow drifts on the bleak
prairie, and lost their presence of mind. After
burning up their wagon it would stem that the
man had killed two' of the oxen for a shelter to
those found In there, and than, accompanied by
one woman, Ind* endeavored to renctlrthe town
they had left, and procure aid to rescue their
eta:opinions. The two other oxen bad wandered
off. There was nothing about the perso na
i to in
dicate whi they were, and nothing more s known
about them than was aocidently communicated
by them during.their brief stay at Oxford. . ;
SWALLOW/NO A Bas or LEAD-. 6 1 .0111011 °PIN-
F.D.—The War.lle lowa Intelligencer says on
Christ:nu Day a Mr. T. W. Batesothilo doing
the exploits of sticking a bar of, lead down his
throat, lot go his hold, and it descended into his
stomaoh. The physicians of this place not know
ing but Batas was trying to hoax them, made a
slight examination at the time, inasmuch u he
had made but little ado about it; and at thus
denied having swallowed the lead at all A few

acid substkce,. the lead , began io corrode, unit
he became very-slat. The physicians were then
callixl JD, and it-waa soon found that every other
attempt to extractthe lead would be unavailing,
save opening tke stomach. .Thin being resolved
upon, some Ave or six phyalciantwere called in
OD Wednesday morning last, when Dr. Deli, of
this place, performed the operation, probably the •
first on record, of opening the stomach and' ex
tracting the lead.. Tho bar. wit about eleven
Inches in length, and about one-half the length
thawed the action of the acid upon It. The p•-•
tient, at but accounts, was getting along finely,
with &prospect of speedy recovery—the Mamma .
lion caused from the lead, while In the stomach,
being the greatest difficulty tocontend with, at
present appearance. The Intelligences of the
11th tells us Bates was rapidly recovering. •

Meow NOTIIIIGIM ix Corar--Concitzttor or
Josons.—The trial of McMahon was 'commenced
this morning. The prisoner being a Catholio
Irishman, his counsel thonght it advisable to
question the Jurors called in relation to their
feelings towards foreigners, and their connection
with the - Know-Nothing organization. Without
a formal decision that perions belonging to that
oath-bound secret organization are, from that
connection merely, incompetent 'to act as Jurors
in a ease between the PCoPle and a Catholle
foreigner,' the course pursued by the Court,
counsel and triers' in the making up of this
panel, appeared to be in effect equivalent to a
recognition of that principle. Mr. Townsend,
for the prosecution, in answer to the objeotion
raised by Mr. Beach, did not concede' that the
obligations orthe Society wopid necessarily pre
vent a member, as a Juror , from returning a
just and fair verdict in a case like the present ;
yet to a certain extent be acquiesced in the
views expressed by Mr. Beach, rho regarded
the tendency of that connection as dangerous,
liable to defeat the ends ofjuitica, and one that
should be carefully guarded agakst, in eases es
eeeially where the life or liberty of a Cathode
foreigner is involved.—Troy Budge, Raturday

with by the physician lay in incomplete diges
tion, ISTOnseqUenee of the condition of the inter=

proper for, digestion and fir the formation Of
blood. The cornmeal broths prepared by boiling
' are deficient-4n facti•in ill those constituents
necessary for , the . formatiett of ithe albumen of
the blood—and the yolk •of egge;•often added
thereto, contains very little of 'this material, for
it has 824. par cent. water and fat, and only. 171,
percent of :a substance very similar to; if not
the same as the albumen of eggs; and whether'
Mists equal in: nutritious qualities to the: albu
men of meat, is,,atoording to the investigation'
of Slagendie ' at least doubtful. The new broth
contains,,besides meat albumen, a certain quail-,
tity of hematin, and therein, a far greater quan
tity of siren necessary -for the formation of the
blood corposcles,•and, fitudly . the digesting °blot
hydrioacid.
-A groat hindrance to the employment of this
broth in summeris its liability to'change in warm
weatheri - it commences regularly to ferment, like
sugar-water-with yeast, without the usual odor.
(What enbatance is here -formed is well worthy
investigation.) On account of this themeat must
be extracted with cold water, and ins cool place.
Ice...water and- refrigeration with Ice completely
removes -this difficulty. Most important. of all is
that the meat be perfectly Math, and not several
.
days old.
This broth is now in use in the hospital and in•
the private practice of several of the most die
tinguisheciphysicians of Munich. - .
. I should, perhaps, have hesitated to give great
er publicity to so simple athing if a new—and to
my family especially- important—eme had not
convinced.me of the great nutritious properties
of this soup, and hence arises the natural
that its , benefits may be experienced bye wider
circle, and other sufferers be restoredby its hen:
efisial effects. A young married lady, who, in'
consequence of en ovarian inflammation, could
take no solid food, lived for two months entirely
-upon this broth, at the end of which period her
health was.perfectly restored. During this time
she gained in flesh and strength. Generally pa
tients Mks this food without opposition only so
long as they are ill; as soon as theycan take oth
er food - they reject this, perhaps 'owing to the
color and faint meat odor. It might in many
cues be of use to color the broth' brown by add
ing burnt eager.
