ik - Fixe*. —lt has been estimated that
the fences of a country cost more than its bouses.
Wood or, fences are not only very, costly, but
soon decay, and need frequent repairs. Stone
and brick, fences are too dear, and the attention
[ of farmers has been turned to lite fences as a
I substitute. In this section the attempt has not
beea very successful, bat in the West where
timber is scarce, lit©fences, °r beiges, are com
in? into quite general. use- The osago orange

1 We Team from the Louisville Journal that quite
on extensive business is now enrried on by eev

hedge, the largest portion of which a toi be
planted along the line of the Illinois rnilrosd.-
Die prices paid for furnishing and setting the
plants, and training the hedge to maturity, nro
from 75 cento to $1,25 por rod, according to
terms of ‘payment, or from 30 to 40 cents per
„d for furnishing and' setting the plants, the
owner completing the cultivation and training.—
This is much cheaper than the wooden fencing.;
The lico fence Is permanent and heautifnl—the
wood. fence Is unsightly and soon decays. It ;
takes shout fonr yoara in the West for an Osago i
Orange Hedge to grow large and strong enongh
to tnrn stock. Afier that it becomes better
every year, end nothing can pass through it. A
hedge on the farm of Mr. James McGrew, of
Montgomery county, Ohio, has been act about
four yoars, and is so compact and broad at the
ground, that neither fowls nor pigs can. pass it,
and so high that the most unruly animal would
not attempt to jump it. Professor Tamer, of I
