Miss Mirrota.—The steamer brings news of
the death of the well known andpopnlar author-,
ess, Mary Russell Mltford. Sbewasaboutelxty
seven years of age. '
She was born in'Abresford, In Hampshire, Eng- :
|#nd. Her father was of an old Northumber
land ffcmily, the Mitfcrrds of Jlitford Castle: her
mdfherwaa the only daughter of the Rev. Dr.
Russell, of Ash.- She ww their only child.—
When etfll a young girV about 1806, Miss.
Mltford published a volume J of miscellaneous
poems,' and two volumes of narrative poems,.
•‘Christina, the Maid of the South Bea,”Yfouhd-;
ed on the story’ofthe mutineers of the bounty),
and ‘‘Blaoche,” a BpaaJah-Btdry. These books
sold well, and attained a fslr shire of popular-.
lty,asd some of them were reprinted in America.
She herself, however, was hot satisfied with them,
and for several yean alter she ‘devoted herself
to reading, instead of writing; and would never
have resumed her pen, if-if had’not 'happened
that eheorith her parents, were suddenly redu
ced from wealth to compantim poverty. Then
she took li mp again, to earn their maintenance
andherown. It was at this time she wrote the
favorite Bketches,-whioh have since' beta pub
lished in a volume under the title of “Onr Yil
; lage t Sketches of Rural‘Character and Scene
ry,” in 1820. The publishers and editors of the
more' noted periodicals rejected her contribu
tions, and they made their first appearance Su
an obsoore little “Lady's Magazine.” The pub
lic appreciated their fresh style, delicate humor
and simple pathos, andthe. result.was that they
