.Dols ON hues= WOOL.--Judge N. E wing,
one of the heaviest wool-growers in Western
Pennsylvania, has addressed a letter to a New
York wool dealer, in which he argues in favor of
the reßeal of the duty on foreign wools. He
gays he bee written to the Hon. John L Daw
son, the Representative of his district in Con
grass, advising him to vote for the repea4ehoulti
the subjeit come up during the present session.
The pith of his argument is contained in the
following extract: .
"If the manufaisturer receives a moderate pro
tection by a duty on the foreign fabric, and is
,not burthened by a tax on the raw material, we
may reasonably hope that American energy and
perseverance will enable him to compete success
fully with his foreign wool. This result will
necessarily create a steady demand for wool; and
and as increased success shall enlarge manufac
turing operations, we may hope that the increas
ed demand will enhance the price. Fluctuations
will be less frequent, and the certain—though it
may be moderate—profit, will satisfy the wool
grower, and cause him to persevere in a business
which he is now so often tempted to abandon."
The district in which the writer of this letter
lives is one of the largest wool. growing regions
in the country, and such an expression from a
leading cultivator of the staple—one, too,.who
has hitherto favored the duty on foreign wool—
is of some importance to the trade. Ito effect
will probably be to accomplish the removal of the
duty.
ExTralsrva EMIGUATION lficurratx.—We have
information from a quarter whence the trnthmay
be expected to proceed, that it is in contempla
tion to establish emigration ' societies on a very
extended wale, in tho large cities andtowns of
this Commonwealth, among the foreign popula
tion, for the purpose of mutually aiding each oth
er to emigrate to Canada or the Great West, as
the parties may themselves decide. In this man
ner it is contemplated to :reduce the num
ber of the Roman Catholic residents at
least one-half, within a brief space of time; and
the design, of coarse, will first move the most
useful among that portion of oar-population.—
We have no direct information of any public
steps hating been taken to consummate the
scheme; but tho principles on which It Is to be
carried out are being discussed, and the project
will probable be perfected.—Boston Journal.
TUX 81f1115 IMMIGEELLTION.—The publication of
an aradavit alleging that 64 Swiss paupers had
been sent to ibis country at the expense of the
magistrates of their native village, has elicited a
card from hi. de Luxe, the Consul at New York
for the Swims Confederation. He states that the
statement is possibly true, but observes that by
the customs of Switzerland, each Swiss citizen
has some rights in the common property of the
city or village to which be belongs, and of which
he is a burgher. This is called anarinde reek;
and thus by receiving from the corporation of
said city or village the means to emigrate, they,
in fait, received part of their own property.
;',..llitirStries in question were shipwrecked, and
was Sent on from Halifax to New York by the
