from the following proeedings of a meeting of
stockholders, held at Me. Vernon, that there is
now a prospect that the work may gol_lotw,ard-
We extract from the Mt. Vernon Danner:
Pursuant to adjournment, another enthusiastic
meeting of the Knox county stockholderi of the
Springfield, Mt. Vernon and Pittsburgh R. R., -
was held at the now Court Room, on Gambier
street, on Thursday lost, December
Skillen, of Hillier township, in the chair.
After a free interchange of opinions, on mo
tion, a Committee, consisting of Judge Miller,
Mt. Vernon, Dr. 8. T. Critchfield, of Howard,
and D. F. Halsey, of Clinton township, were ap
pointed to draft resolutions expressive of the
sense of the meeting.
The Committee, through Judge Miller, report.
ed the following- resolutions, which were read
separately and unanimously adopted.
Ezzoked, That the people of Knox county are
deeply interested in finishing the Springfield,
Mt. Vernon & Pittsburgh R It., andthis meet
ing earnestly recommend that an immediate ef
fort be made by the citizens to assist in relieving
the company from its embarrassments, and resu
ming its work on the Esatern
division. -
!tundr That this meeting approve of the
action of the Stockholders' meeting, held at Del
aware, on the let day of October last, and will
cordially unite in the effort proposed by the
Stockholders to raise means.
Re.lva,. That when the Springfield, Mt. Ver
non & Pittsburgh IL IL shall be finished, it will
afford a channel for trade and travel, of such
Value to the population and country through
which. it passes, and between the eastern and
western cities and country, that will make its
stock valuable as an investment
Resolved, That in view of the deep obligations
which we are under for foreign aid, we desire to
assure those who have rendered it, that there is
a united determination to go on and complete
the Road an soon as the state of the times will
permit, and that in our opinion there is strength
in the country through which it passes and in
the greatness of the enterprise Itself, to guaran
tee that the Road shall be completed.
Resolved, That ,
.the Eastern Division of the
Rosa ought to have four Directors, located upon
said Road, end we select and recommend for Di
rectors the following named Stockholders:
The blank in the last resolution was filled with
the names of C. P. Buckingham, Dr. J. W. Rus
sell, Dr. L. P. Critchfield and George Skillen,
Esq.; so that these gentlemen are recommended
as Directors on the part of Knox county.
Anthony, who was present in the meeting,
made another lengthy and highly satifactory
statement, in regard to the history of, and his
connection with, the S. 31t. V. and P. It. R. He
dealt altogether in facts and figures, and there
who but one opinion amongst the stockholder"
present in regard to him. and that was, that be
had made a plain, honest tout truthful statement.
Indeed, we most say, that be not only triumph
' anUy acquitted himself but made many warm
friends in Knozuonnty, who will ever entertain
for him tho highest regard.
An interesting and very encouraging letter
from 8. 8. L'llommedien, the distinguished press
ident of the Cincinnati, Hamilton anl Dayton
Railroad was read by Gen. Anthony. AD. L'
llommedieu appreciates very highly our line of
'road; and will be with. us in due season.
'Dr.. Critchtleld then offered the following res.
°lotions, which were passed unanimously, amidst
great enthusiasm:
Resolved, That we heartily congratulate the
friends of tho 8. Att. V. and P. R. R., upon the
restoration of good feeling sad confidence in its
management.
Euered, That we earnestly recommend to the
stockholders of the S. Mt. V. and P. R. R. to
pay up their stock subscriptions without further
delay, so thit the work may be pushed forward
as rapidly as possible to speedy completion.
"All's well that ends well" We are reallyre•
joked to know that all the difficulties that for the
past year hare surrounded the Springfield, Mt.
Vernon and Pittsburgh Railroad, base been hap
pily adjusted; and we now look forward, with en
tire confidence, to the early resumption mid spee
dy completion Of the work. All that is wanting
Ls a united, rigorous effort, on the part of its
friends, and it must be built.
Tux Winos or MISSOCRI.—The Whig mem
ber! of the Legislature of Missouri, have been
making themselves a platform of the following
description :
Resolved, That the Whig members of the Gen-,
end. Assembly owe it to themselves and their
constituents, as citizens of a Slave State, to dis
countenance, in every way, the efforts of the
Free Sailers and Abolitionists, to continue the
agitation of the slavery question, in Congress or
out of it; and: hat they will not rote for any per
for Speaker of-the House of Repmentatives
or Senator in Congress, who Is not known to be
of these views, and pledged to sustain them.
Ruolred, That we will rote for no man, for
Speaker or Senator, who is not in favor of ac
quiescing-in the bill pureed at the last session of
Congress, known as the Sanas Nebraska
and who will not, with all his influence, oppose
a repeal of that bill—particularly the section
which repeals the Missouri Compromise, and
that part of the bill which provides for the ren
dition of fugitive slaves."
Is there any ehanie for each Whip and the
great mass of Northern Whip to unite in a Na
tional Convention I In the first place commit a
flagrant outrage, and then repudiate every man
who will not submit to it and stand by it,und
call him a " fatuotio" and oppo . sed to the peace
of the Union ! For our part we consider it ut
terly disgraceful, and as exhibiting a despicable
and craven : spirit, for the North to acquiesce in
an outrage which gives up Kanzai to Slavery.--
.Leaving the whole question of the rights of the
slave out of consideration, the gross invasion of
the rights of the people of the free States ought to
arouse them - to a resolution rioter to yield under
any circumstances—no, never! And, yet alas
men who were once true-hearted Northern men
have jcined a secret organization which, propo
ses to bow to the control of the slsveocracy.

bringing Massachusetts into the traces of the
slave power: The Telegraph, as ittakea "a bolder

AROTEIER GREAT FRAUD IN New YORIT
The recent suspension of business by the Empire
City Bank has resulted rather seriously to a ma
jority of the Directors, in consequence of one of
their number having previously become indebted
to the institution in the sum of $lOO,OOO. It
seems a gentleman of high standing in the com
munity, Mr. Santee! Leggett, was a leading
member of the Bank directors, and being re
ported to possess wealth, it was deemed no risk
to loan him large amounts. Since the Bank
'closed, an investigation into the affairs has taken
place, and yesterday it was discovered that Mr.
Leggett owed the Batik $lOO,OOO. It Ras thought
his indthtedness would not exceed $20,000, but
on footing up accounts, the Directors ascertained
their mistake.
It is understood that the operations of Mr.
Leggett hart involved Elijah P. Purdy, Esq., to
the amount of some $40,000 or $50,000, by Mr.
Purdy's endorsing a portion of his paper dis
counted in the Empire City Bank. A few days
ago Mr. Purdy was surprised by the receipt of a
letter from Mr. Leggett, in which he stated to
Mr. Purdy that he (Mr. Partly) bed been hLs
beet friend, not excepting his (Leggett's) father.
Me was exceedingly sorry to say that all he owed
Mr. Pertly he could not pay him, and he must
look to the world for it, as before six o'clock
that evening he (Mr. Leggett) would be no more !
Efforts were immediately made by Mr. Partly
and others interested in the Empire City Beek,
to find Mr. Leggett, but their efforts were en
sucemeful, as they were informed he had not
been seen since the 28th of last month.
Mr. Leggetrwas a partner of Thos. J. Sloan,
Esq., and 00-proprietor of the Empire Works,
foot of East Twenty-fifth street, and his myste
rious disappearance has created quite a sensa
tion among the mercantile community.—N. Y.

The wool trade of the country continues ex
ceedingly depressed, and the trade has seldom
or ever been in a tone condition than at the
present time. Several manafacturers have re.

but few are working full time. The stock on
hand is pretty large, and money difficult to re

early improvement, and willingly accept on com

have been current at any period since 1842.
