This wjuld be n waste of time and space to no purpose‘ Without a perversion of the truth, it cannot avoid the consequences of such false theologY,kr.d impure morality as that pro mulgated by St - Ligmri aml sanctioned by the church. ...... The "Catholic" attempts to weaken the force .of the examination of St. Liguori by the Chris tian Rementbmneer, by charging injustice on the translator. La regard to truthfulness, for in swum, it says that Liguori was not establishing ntheory of truthfulness, "but simply discussing the questilm whether,' under any circumstances, when there is a just cause (quando juste cause est, ) Or when it it expedient or memory to COtte.l what e person in interrogated about, it is lawful' to use iiraph4bology, or expressions of — double meaning. , St. Liguori says it is right thee to equivocate or use I.gmage which has a double meaning, "an- der certain circumstances," which the translator, the "Catholic" says, has taken sore to omit. The "Cathelie" should recollect that the reviewer' was discussing the theory of theft, and that the theory of truthfulness was only mentioned inei dentally. Why does not the "Catholic" itself give us the circumstances, as laid down by Li -1 goori, when it is lawful to equivocate • The "Catholic" goes GO to advocate ettnyhtbot. o-jy, which is using a phrase which has a doable meaning and is susceptible of opposite interpr, tstions, and refers to the Blessed Savior as on 1 example, as follows: "Ln the 7th of John, he says, —Go ye up to 1 this festival day, but Igo not up to this Pietro( Joy." Vet in the same place it is written that he went up to the festival day, not openly, but to secret." Tllit, the "Catholic" asserts is en example of mplibologfan the part of the Ssvior. Our translation admits of nu 'such interpretation— "Go ye up unto this feast; Igo not up yet unto this feast. When be hod said these words unto them he abode still in Galilee. But when his brethren were gone up, then went he also up onto the feast, not openly, but as it were in se c ret," We see nothing of a double meaning, nothing intended to convey a wrong impression, nothing capable of misinterpretation, nothing like am- phitology in the passage. The "Catholic" says i further, that 'if Protestantism be true the Sa vior has used an amphibotogy on two meet sol emn occasions, and left his disciples in the dark about his real meaning"—referring to the scene of . the last supper—"this is my body," rthis is my blood." There is no sinology between this and the subject St. Liguori is.discwising, The totter means 'that it is right to nee equivocal I toguage, phrases which have a double meaning, i when the person using the language thinks it is ueewerirv, nx...wer diem. ___The.riCeirholiei: wfo Scarcely u ore to charge t he Savior with an intent to deceive, or to mystify his diSciples, and that they were not Opo_e_ise4,is I , m7Lerident from toe whole tenor of after scripture, and the wage of the chsch until it was perverted by false priests who wished to erect a power for themselves, by which tiler -mull control the masses of human naiad, and give force to• their claims of holding the Seye,of HeT, . The phrweolo , " this is my body," .. lam the living bread4"' my flesh is meat," "my blood is drink," "lam the true vine, ye are the branches," are till analogous, not intended to be interpreted literally, figures of speech intended to enforce some great truths which could not be un deretood without figures, and have no eorrres pondence with ampbibology. as referred to by 1 Liguori, where there is understood to be an in tent to convey. a double meaning. That thine iligttfes are not literal, is not only evident from the inapowibility of the case, but from the decla ration of the , Savior himself, in explanation, af ter discoursing to the Jews on the subject of giv ing them his flookarkindood to eat.—" It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth noth ing: the words that I speak unto yop We spirit and aro life." • The fact, however, that Romanism allow; of equivocation, and the ostrof phrases of a dou ble meaning, when "expedient or necessary to conceal what a person may be interrogated about" is admitted by the "Catholic," and it ever dares to attempt to involve the blessed Re deemer in the meshes of its sheeting theology. We bare no need, therefore to go to St. Liguori,' for facts which a Catholic 'editor in Pittsburgh admits. The Catholic " succeeds no better with false swearing, or equivocation ander the solemnities of an oath. After denying the correctness of the "Itemembrancer's" translation, it gives what it calls the "true translation" and makes Its own comments, as follows : " The following is the true translation to which the Reatembrancer refers—“Wbbever has only outwardly sworn, without any intention of wearily, (rine amino jurandi), is not bound thereby, un less by reason of scandal; eincele has not sworn, but acted, in jest. Nevertheless, ho can be com pelled in law, in fore ezlerno to keep his oath." The fraud of the translator in thit l?emembran cer, is patent. Liguori 'asserts that a man who tales en oath without any intention whatever of :really swearing at all, is not bound by each an oath for it le no oath at all Instead of having sworn, such a CUM has only spaniel with she san, iity of an oath. Yet even At ?said be compelled, in faro exiting, to lisp such an oath, and would be, fur thermore, obliged to do to on account of scandal. Yet from this the veracious translator coneindee, that the author sanctions the saying, and en courages the practice of "swearing with the tongue and not with the mind ; " that when a nose has sworn externally, "he has not sworn, he has only joked." The translator leaves out the essential parts of his author's proposition, and then jumps to the wished for conclusloo. e suppresses the moot necessary feature of the case, sine animojorandi, the absence of any ineen lion whatever of swearing: Liguori simply soya, such an oath would, in reality, be no oath : it would want an cestntial requisite." What it the meaning of all this, tut that if a man outwardly takes an oath, but mentally, 1 . internally goes not intend to. swear, he is not bound thereby, "he has not sworn." For Instance, the editor of the " Catholic" cold intrude him self into any of the numerous ,secret societies, take all the oaths of secrecy, without any intim flan of swearing at all, and go forth and reveal what-he has learned to his superiors for the good of the Church, and not be guilty of false swear ing, because the Church adjudges he has not taro= at all. Or if he were called before a Court of justice, inn case where his own interest,' ur the interestiof thOgnarch are concerned, he has on ly to inten'iltof to /error, while he publicly takes the oath, and lie has not then sworn at all, and can equivocate, uso.amphibology to his heart's • con tent, Il' he deems it "expedient and necessary," .What aliorrible elite of morality this dieclosesl Even 'giving the editor of the Is Catholic" the - benefit of hie ova translation and interpretation, the 'hideous characteristics of Roman Catholid morality and theology stand revealed in all their tßonstrOPlPlVort 4 oa.' • take one more extract from this extraor dinardefence of the "Cathelim•! And if it had at Bret some little eppearance of respectability, that has worn oil since the design of making three or four rat offices for nutimmted fogies of the Democracy ban loomed into prim:dummy. A New York paper which claims to be the father of genuine Democrats in that region, calls upon Congress Who very particular, iacreating a com mission for the purpose of tendering the propon ed mediation in due form,. to name the persons who are to 511 it, lest the liitle mon at the head of affair, should appoint men of no higher en dowments than themselves and thus expose the country to the disparaging animadversions of oilier governments. This organ of the antieol ministration faction of the Democracy, nominates ex- President Can Burro, Mr. Everett and Mr. Benton. They would form an impartial and judicious board of arbiter. in this case. The subject will come op_ in the &Mate on Tuesday next, when it is said that General Cass, Mr. Clayton tad other oracles bei the manage ment of our foreign affairs will present their siesta on the case. Mr. Marcy has given the plan his endorsement, and it may go through, but the chances are the other way Efforts are making to induce the President to redeem hie pledge to Mr. Gruel in relation to the Marseilles Consulship. Mr. O. sseerts that General Pierce gore him an order on Mr. Marcy us long ego es tact August for a commiesiqn SP Consul at the place named, but that the Secre tary of State bluntly declared that be would not issue it, and that he would leave the depart; meet if it were done without his consent.. Tole promise of tho Piessident is mid to be ono•Of the conditions on which Mr. Grand made the tour of Pennsylvania last fall harangaing the Ger mans, and importuning them to forget Nebraska and etiok to Democracy. Whatever the privet., terms of the arrangement were, the bad ounces,. of the expedition afforded. a convenient coverfor canceling the bargain. The Know-Nothings of course are very anxious that Grundy should be appointed, since it would no doubt excite a feeling in the country , which would recruit their ranks at a very opportune moment.' - It needs some such windfall as Ohio to wake the defeat of Wise in Virginia certain and easy. Soon after the holydays a combined adminie tration assault is to be made on the Know Seth loge In Congetiii 11th a slew of separating them from the Demoktsta, and taking position for the elections of next year, and the Presidential strug gle of 1856. The Committee on Commerce, in the House, have in the'-meantime Indicated their sentiments in the prefaires by adopting a bill and report providing for thif exclusion under rigorous pen alties `of foreign paupers and criminals who are now arriving in eucii numbers under the pretence of being bore fide immigrant settlers. The bill provides that every alien passenger on embarking for the United States, must be registered by the American Consul at the place at which he begins Isis voyage. If:entitled to It, the passengeiehall receive a certificate that he bus not been convict , ed on any criminal charge during the preceding four years, political offences excepted, that be has been an inmate of no jail, alms house or Work house, Any vessel bringing passengers without such registering and certificate shall be forfeited, and the captain and other parties res ponsible for the feet shall be held punishable by fine and imprisonment. This seems to be a pretty thorough measure, and will without doubt be received in the House with loud protestations and denunciations, but the evil complained of has become abiroet intolerable, and requires SPECIAL.
