Bencitattr.—The dwelling house of Dlr. r.
Mertz, situated ,en Sandusky street, Allegheny,
iras entered by burglars, on Satifrday night last,
lam carried off some articles of clothing, among
which was an overcoat containing the hey of his
large shoo store on Federal street—ts which they
proceeded, and selected several pairs of boots
and ladies' shoes. They also took ten or twelve'
dellals in silver from the counter drawer, with
a few, noise on broken banks. The exact amount
of the loss cannot be ascertaineil, at, the stock is
very large. Several pairs of boots wore found
on the floor, which had been strained by efforts
-to pt them on. The burglars entered Through a
kitchen window, by breaking open the shutters

tials of Mr. Johnston, who was elected to 511 the
• vacancy occasioned by the resignation of Mr.
Borland. He appeared and was sworn in.
Mr. Shields reported a bill to increase the effi
ciency of the army, and notified that he would
call it up at an early day. •
. The House bill for 'the relief of the children
and heirs of 'Lunn do lif• ab, was taken up and tie •
bated.
Messrs. Badger and Clayton warmly eulogized
the virtues and noble deeds of De Kalb, end ur
ged the passage of the bill. It wan, referred.
A bill establishing a Department of Law to
place of the Attorney General's office was taken
Horn.—Mr. Robbins offered a resolution,
- which was adopted, toinstruct the Committee on
Naval Affairs to inquire into the expediency of
placing the °Mcersi mainen and marines who
served daring the 711exican war, on the same
footing as to bounty land,-extra - pay, etc., as
those who served in the Pacific daring the came
period.
Mr. Phillips introduced a bill authorizing the
construction of six sloops of war. Referred to
.the Committee on Naval Affairs.
Mr. Clingman made an ineffectual effort to
introduce a joint resolution that it might be re
ferred to the Committee on Foreign Affairs, re
-questing the President to tender mediation to
the Powers engaged in the eastern war.
:Saw Your., Dec: 18.—The steamer Cahawba
arrived from Havana with dates to the I2th.
Capt. .lirCullech, his mate, and four men be
longing to the American 'schooner J. G. White
arrived at Havana in a Spanish war ejsamer
which towed the schooner in. It was captured
a few week,. ago at &ascots having arms and
munitions of war on board. Capt. McCullough
and crew, and two persons named Felix and La
coste are implicated in the affair, and wore con
ei,ned to prison to await their trial.

the Albany which was at Carthagena on the 10th
October.

at Vera Crux and the city of Merino. The ac
counts from other places have not come in. In
the former city not a single negative rote is :re
tarded, and in the city of Mexico on the_ first
there were 12,452 a ffi rmative votes and one rote

thrown 'by a carp)ntet named Mendota.LThe
rating was to continue for two successive ye.
A rumor isreporttld in the papers that the city
Of Acapulco had pr . onounced against. Alvarez and
nominating for Governor, Don Thomas Moreno.
This statement istitot made officially and wants
confirmation.
The town of Tegapeleo in the district of Sate
pee, was attacked ou the', 14th, by a body of
about 1500 insurgents under the command of
Pinion. The attach was continued during the
11th, 15th, and 16th November, but was 11.11,
ea:l.4rd. The government account states that the
insurgents were put to flight with great loss and
had takes up a position on the neighboring hills.
Ou the morning of the 27th, the Government of
Slexioo, received an express from Sliohocan,
stating that the insurgents attacked the city of
Morelia with 2500 men and one piece of artillery,
nod that after six hours fighting the enemy were
driven from the city, leaving in the streets and
suburbs a large number of worm del and prison
ers, and their piece of artillery. The loss of the
government troops, is not stated, the death of
Gen. Echagarsy being the only one spoken- of.—
Official despatches Mate that ail the bands of
insurgents under the command of Pimon, Arias
and others have united for the purpose of at
tacking the city, and that a number of disaffect
ed people had joined them.. In town they have
increased the number to more than 3500. The
