gored. is unworthy of the frank, manly and . r r '"''''''or ''' '.t . ''''
ingenuous character of R e publicanism, and par
ticularly American Republicanism. Fat 1 can
not concur in the expediency of denouncing the
principles and objects of the order. The fun
scope and nature of Know-Nothinginm are not
yet sufficiently developed to-jnitify a decision
upon its tendencies. I sold (your readers may
remember) some weeks ago that its more imme
diate effects wool,' be to dilidh the North and to
weaken the elementa of resistance to the germ
mg encroachoients of elenery. That result has
already taken place to .most lamentable extent.
lint what will be the end? We can plainly per
ceive that the South, the slavery propaganda,
has greedily taken hold of the movement as a
means of crushing freedom of sentiment oil the
sectional contest in the North. Adams, of Mis
aisaippi, a narrow-minded bigot, who sees a nig
ger in every hedge, decLsres he wishes to de
prive foreigners of all political privileges, le.
canoe they join the abolitionists. Now, in this,
Adams is' very greatly mistaken. The exact
opposite of his statement Is the troth. The for
eign vote at the North ban ewers and almost
'unitedly been thrown for slavery, and has ren
dered the South services of inestimable value in,
branding and hunting down every Northern pub
lic man, of independent opinions regarding sla
very, as an "Abolitionist." They bade been the
bloodhounds with which the South has chased
! its victories in the free State:. Many a ..NtOrth
, ern patriot hoe been etruck down by the rabble
root which they have raised.
In this respect there has been latterly some La-.
provemeed, but even now the fact is generally as
I have stated It. There were some very striking
cams of this sort of foreign Influence in the late
popular contest. It was the German vote alone
which teat back to Congress that arch Nebran
ha conspirator, A. A. Richardson-almost the
only supporter( of Douglas In his treachery
at Mileage, were the 'lrish 'who swarm in that
city. Tom Florence, distinguished for his zeal in
behalf of the Nebraska villainy, as well as by
the fervor of bin heating to Native Americanism,
was returned by Irish votes. Indeed the es
caped Australian convict Mitchell, who is dying
for the went of a gang of sleek and fat ne
groes;in Alabama, is an excellent representation
of bin countrymen in the United Staten:
The Germans are coming round, but in my

hsh pigmy rather than a giant in statesmanship.
They nU, however,. eagerly grasped at a report
of his late lecture in Baltimore on the Pacific rail
road, and laid it before their readers as a trium
phant vindication of the claims of Missouri and
-Saint Louis. The Intelligence,. thus speaks of it :
"Benton's Baltimore speech marks an era in
the decelopement of American greatness. By
the side of Its moral vastness, the trimming, stale
and paltry messages of Presidents, die away in
empty insignificance. ftsbarc statements of facts ,
are the thrilling developemente of new, strange,
and great ideas. And the impression it leaves
on the mind, is the Jame as if some great spirit
had raised up the reader above the •'gate" of the
nations, and revealed to the future thronged
highway and the beaten track of unborn millions,
pressing to the shores of the P.cifac. Grant the
credibility of Beacon's authorities, quoted in his
speech—and whu-dares impeach their trntht—
and the speech stands the apocalypse of Ameri
can geography, American commerce, American
greatness. designed since the world began and
revealed to us in the latter days."
•
What o pity it is that s paper capable of doing
this much justice to one cif the greatest men of the
ave, had , not the courage to advocate his election

The paltriness of party spirit was never more
manifest than in Benton's defeat them.

The . of a public min Is not the prop

is this the ease with such a man tts Mr. (lively.
who is yet in the prime of fife, and probably bus
the best part of his career before him. It this

his days, with his course accomplished, there are
stil enough prejudices and misunderstandings
about hiin to clog the way to the public ear. Only
when years have cast their shadows upon his
grave can-he be appreciated and understood.
We regard--the book before us. therefore, att
untimely. It - eemes too soon. It tells us many
things about its hero which we did not know be
fore, and which are of much interest; but it is a
story only half finished; end as the remainder
cannot be written, for perhaps many years, we
feel thit it should not hose been began.
We are glad to note in the preface an assur
' once that Mr. Greely is innocent of tbi.pk.
Had he been a party to its publication, in any
sense, it would 6060 dimmed a reputation which
all acknowledge to be brilliant.
It ireridently a boot made to sell—such nod
inch a quantity of foolscap furnished by the ee
-1 tiler for 60 much. A great deal of it is irrele
, rant and unueceseary, and more of it unwise.
The first chapter contains a loop, and by no
means lucid scam:int of the siege of Londonder
ry, Ireland, which is designed as an introduction
to the fact that Mr. greely's mother woo descen
ded from n family which emigrated from London
derry after the siege. His father, it seems; was
descended from a family
, whieh originally came
from Nottingham, England; but the reader is
fortunately excused from perusing a history of
Nottingham, although it, would hare been as per.
tinent as the other.
Hod the boot began at its second chapter nn

record of Mr. Greeley's early life, and then oaks
