The institution is truly no admirable one, and Pittsburgh has reason to be proud of its catab- _ lent in our midst. It will long remain a no ble memorial of the largo-hearted benevolence end public opirit of her eltixene z Tan Cxxscs.—We ore indebted to Mr. J. D. 15. DeDow, the Superintendent of the Census, for a book containing a Compendium of the Seventh Census. It embraces many tables and statistics not to be found in the largo work on the Census; end although these tables are tinctured with the peculiar Southernisms of Mr. Deßow, they are of considerable value. On the 95th page wo have a table of the num ber of slaveholders in the United States. This Is a very important table; becanse it demon strates the fact that the rinse-owning class, which really:govemis this country, is oontempti ' ble in point of numbers. A neuthern member of Congr.se, some time since, asserted there were three- millions of slaveliolders, or rather more than there were then slaves to bo held. Others _contended that a:very email proportion of the white population of the South held their fellow men as property, and that the whole number of nlaveholders, on a very liberal computation, did nut exceed 500,000. The, great question is solved by the census. But the solution is not such na to strengthen the slave-power, sod therefore it is of the rawest, importance that the fact Should be spread before the people, with all the sanction that its official character can give it. Here is the table :Amnon in Slaw Ei 4irricr F 1,9,9=4;;,r1fe: "?-1 itnffg-rifEITM vyoe e -oop_yy .1 d d 5. . v . 1 6 4 . . i Egli.Altiiialil 10° ''''' t32g \ 10 and un =2,CriS"attai '%og Isr.nulEv7 4 4 " lt:t7r .r.r.5. 3) and an FirlEMl= r .• rz DI : F. p f ....t.Talit,slS.P..&:. kgrmit, bow le! I EgEntalitlinig wn" The Superintendent states, in a note to the ta ble, that, " where the party owns slaves in dif ferent counties, Orin different States, he will be entered more then'once. This will disturb the - c alculation very little, being only the case among the larger properties, and it will account for 641 fact that a smaller number of such properties are reported in some of the States than are known to exist, particularly in South Carolina, 19.1 H ginia and Louisiana." The number of largo ; slaveholdere is therefore smaller than the table; shows, and every one who possesses say know ledge of Southern life will readily conclude that ; there must be thousands of elaveholders who own gives in different counties and States, and are' consequently numbered two . or three times in this report. It would be safe, we think, to pre mise that the actual number of slave-Owners does not exceed 340,1100. Of this number, it ; will be eeen by the table, .68,820 own but one slave each, while 105,688 own less than five each, and 80,685 less than ten etch. These three I classes of small elaveholders constitute an ag gregate of 255,788 ---nearly three fourths of thh whole number; and they hold, on an average, not over 900,000 alarm or less thin one third of the total slave population. 'llse large slavehold era, who own 10 elaero and upwards to 1000, number only 92,257, shoed ono fourth of the whole, and they control about 2,300,000 slaver, or more then two thirds. These are the bone and sinew of the, elaveholding oligarchy—those whqs give tone and character to elaveholding movements, and have the ,smaller fry of sieve holders to follow is their wake ; and when we deduht the widows and orphans included in the 'number, who hold many slaves in the aggregate but exercise no political influence, the total num ber of our national masters is probably about 80,500—less than the population of gals city of Pittsburgh in which we live. The government, almost since its formation, has been tlader the control of this class of men and all its mighty powers tirenow wielded by them for the benefit 8f the institution which gives them such a com manding position. The millions of free men in the North mast feel humiliated when they reflect that they are politically subject to a miserable squad of 80,000 or thereibonts. Another table in-this work gives the number of Malodor slaves. The total is 246,656, leaving 2,057,057 black slaves. Tie average proportion of mulattoes to blacks is e . little less-than 10 per cent. This is a aubjeet which is abaalsatly suggestive of reflections, and we therefore mere ly mention the facts, as officially promulgated. The total number of free blacks in the slave states is 139,168, and free ,hfolattoes 102,333, the proportion of the latter to the whole number being 43 per cent. Under the' head of " liarriages," lg tits vol wmo, wo sod it stated that the marriages • of slaves are not counted in the Census, and that ao extended information exists on that point. hlr. De Bow would p,obably have no believe be doee not know that the celebration of- the rite of marriage among elaves is prohibited by law in so me if not all the Slays Stator.
