Early yesterday noon information reached this city that a large ship, name then unknown, was aground about four miles kouth of Long Branch, on the. Jersey shore, near to Sandy Hook,. and that she lay in a very dangerous position: To. wards one o'clock wo learned that this vessel was the New Era, lately built in Bath, Mc., which had sailed from Bremen, with three hun dred and eighty passeneers, for New York. - The ship New Era was built by Meier!. Hitch cock & Co., of Bath. Me., daring, the present. year. She was of thirteen hundred and twenty eight tons barthen, and was valued at seventy-one thousand dollarri About the 22d of September last, she sailed from the port'of Bremen under command of Capt. Henry, on her Brat voyage, foi the port'of Be* York, having a very heavy In surances effected in Bath, Me., and Boston, with chargei amounting to nearly six thousand'dol tars, secured in Wall street; in this city. She wascouigned to Messrs. Charles C. Duncan CO., of 52 South street. The emigrants were all' German. After a somewhat tedious passage, the.. New Era come fully in sight of land about midday of Sunday, the 12th instant, and, continuing her count in a dense fog. she ran whore between Deal and Long Branch, during the same night. At an early. hour yesterday morning, the *es perceived lying with broadside to -shore; with a 'very heavy sea on, which was breakiag over her, and washing her decks. At 12 o'clock, noon, there *ere perceptible signs of her tweaking up. From the moment the was seen every effort was made by the people on shore to save the mangers. Early in the afternoon theytad sue ceded in passing lines to the ship, and in a short time after, Captain Henry, witn twenty of the passengers, was landed in safety. From them, it was learned that before they left the vessel, over one hundred and fifty of the remaining pas sengers weris dead, having been either smothered -between decks, drowned by the flow of water, (which *as continually surging over them,) or been swept overboard. Renewed exertions were made from the beach to care the balance...3f the people on booed, but up to .the moment of our last accounts, they were attended with very little =mess. The New Era is aground on the Jersey shore, between D& and Long Branch,' about fifteen miles below Sandy Hook, and nearly thirty-five miles from New York.' The beach is sandy, bleak,' and - at this sesssl of the year very dangerous. Shrewsbury Inlet is on one aide of the vessel, sad Shark Inlet and the rugged beach of Squan on the other. The secret organization will have a rather hard time -of it in the Old Dominion at the beet, es pecially as the members can poll no clandestine votes, but must march up to' the ballot-bores and proclaim their choice Washington Union. Here is Democracy, as exemplified by the Ad ministration 'organ. It rejoices that in Virginia citizens may not vote their true sentiments un awed by party proscription or 'the influence of thoge who would dragoon them into coring as they may please. The Union rejoices over that system of voting which finds its stoutest defend ers among the landed aristocracy of England, and designates that. which has been generally adopted by the Finites of the Union as one in which •'clandestine votes' are polled. The Rich mond Enquirer has said that ••martial law" is now necessary to save the Democratic party in Virginia, and the Union, doing shame thereby to every principle of true Democracy, shows how it is to be enforeed.—Ball.
