The steamer Columbia arrived at San Francis

Mr. Noble, a resident of Vancouver, fur
nisbee the San Francisco Herald with the follow
ing.horrible details of the bloody massacre com
mitted by the Snake Indians, upon a party of
emigrants, near Fort Boise, in Oregon:
Oa the morning of the 22d of August last, a•
party of eighteen men left Fort Boise, for the
perpose of resucing three ladies and a number of
children, who were mappe, , sed to be in 'he hands
'of partyof Winnass Inftine, (one Of the small
trtees'of Snake Indians, who live on Beige river)
who attacked Mr. Alexander Ward's train,. from
Miesouri, on the 20th ,of - August, about noon,
twenty-five miles above Fort Boise, on the Booth
side-af Boise River. •
Thht party, on arriving at the place where the.
first attack was made, found tile bodies of Mr.
Alex. Ward and lie eldest eon Robert, Samuel
Mulligan, Charles Adams, Wm. Babcock and a
German, name unknown. ,
From the statement of the surviving boy New
ton Ward, it would appear that no effeepial re
sistance was offered by any of the party, except
Dr; Adams and Mulligan, who fought bravely.
Following the trail, in about three. hundred
yards, the body of young Amon lasi found, a lad
of 17 years of age; the was ono of the seven who
came to the rescue on the day of the attack,
sekt.Lt Wm. Youths.) This young man foughtwith
great valor, pursuing the Indians to the bushes,
where he was killed.. About one hundred yards
'further on, the body•of Miss Ward was found,
having been shot through the head with a mus
ket- ball. Her person was much bruised; her
hands showing signs of her having fought meat
desperately to resist the fiendish attacks of those
enrages ape's her youthful person. The marks
of teeth were plainly Implanted upon her left
cheek; a hot piece of iron had been throat into
her doubtless while alive, to peusish her for her
resistance, and their being unable to accomplish
their hellish ends upon one so young. Within a
few rods of this spot a wagon had been burned,
and the bodies - of two dogs-found crisped up.
About fifty yards. an, in the.brush, three more
wagons were burned. The trail was followed
up, and in about six hundred yards the body of
Mrs. White (the wife of Wm. White, who lives in
Looking-glen Prarie, Umpqua Valley,) was
found stripped Of her clothing, and scalped.—
Her head was-Beaten in by clubs, and also is mus

Showed signs of the most brutal violence.
-The trail was followed from her, and In about
half a miletbrough advise thicket of brush and
undergrowth, the fifth 'wagon was found having
been run into a deepravine and left.

body of Mrs. Ward and three children were
found. Sirs. Ward was laying . in the encamp
ment in front of afire, her person having been
robbed of all its covering, and her_ body much
scarred by bbutish bruises. Her face bad a deep
wound Inflicted by a tomahawk, which propably
carried her death. The-children were lying en
the fire In front 'ef 'imp having evidently' been
burned alive, as a portion of -their hair still re

death, in front of their mother, andkehe doubt

She. was 'Soon to bo a - mother, which rendered i
the sight still mare shocking. ',Several parts of •
Stubs were picked 'some dhstarce from the fire, •
liirrikg been dragged away by the wolves, or the
Indite dog'., for several, had been left in the
comp by them.. Having scares any implementi,
the bodies were interred in the best manner pos
sible under the circumstances.
There was still a lad and fivoehildren missing.
dilligent search was made' for their bodies
withoet success. From the' statement of the
surviving boy it was known that this lad was
wounded and ran to the 'bushes; and has probe-.
sly fines died; and it is more than possible
that the three children are still captives, or re
served for some future barbarous ceremony.
From the statement of Mr. 31fisterson, who is
a brother of Mrs. Ward and Mrs. White, it ap
pears that the booty that the Indiana carried off
consisted of forty-one head Eicattle,,, five horses,
and about $2OOO or $3OOO in money, biocides
gene, pistols, ho.
The party of seven finding the Indians great
ly superior In number, were obliged to abandon
the pursuit. William Santis, on returning to the
scene of the first attack,. discovered Newton
Ward, a lad about thirteen years of, age, the on
ly survivor of the party, severely wounded, and
brought him off in safety.
We hare news of tho'murder of three men on
Garners° Prairie, which is-otr.leffries and Mc-
Arthur's cot off. I have . the story from a man
who was at the spot . a few moments after it oe
'eurred: The Indians bode up to three -men,
(who were. driving the loose cattle and horses of
the train,) and shook minds with them in,the
friendliest manner possible; but as soon no these
men had turned their batiks upon them to pass
on, they shot them. The Indians then drove off
all the loose cattle and horses belonging to the

train.
