Arrival of the Emilia In Boston.

The Europa arrived here at 11 o'clock last
night. Fourteen survivors of the steamship Arc
tic are among her passengers.
Mr. C. T. Mitchell, of Charleston, 8. C., and
Edward Dupasseur, of New Orleans, two of them,
state that Mrs. Collins and her son and daughter
were drowned by then upsetting of the boat in
which they had been.placed by Capt.:Luce.
Mr. John Degnon, , the first assistant engineer,
furnishes the following statement:
"The.fitst I heard was a cry of 4 atop the en
gines.' Inimediately after this -I. heard the sig
nal bells rung to have them stopped. At the time
I felt the crash of. the collision, in company with.
the chief engineer. Mr. Rodgers, I ran down to
the platform, before reaching which the engines
were stopped by John Willet, the engiheer on
duty. Mr. Rodgers looked over the platfornfin
to the bilge and saw the rush of - water, - and he
then gave orders to open the bilge injection, I
which was immediately done. At this time the
bell rang for the t ngines to go ahead again.. Mr..
Rodgers then told me to go forward and see that '
the Worthington pumpswero set to work, which
was done.

Al this time the four bilge pumps, the two
bilge injections -and the Worthington. pumps
were in full operation. In the course of ten
minutea after the collision, the water rose over
the fire-room floor, height of four feet; and in
thirty minutes more the lower fires were put out.
The engines continued working; the steam fall
ing down to-one and a half pounds. In thirty
five minutes more the water bad gained so much
as to put, out the upper fires. I then left the
engine room and went forward and informed Capt.
Luce that nothing more couldbe.done:by the
engines or pumps."
The names of the passengers saved in the two
boats which reached Broad Cove, are as follows:

These were all first-class passengers. .
The second-class passengers saved in these
boats were—N. M. Tuns, Sr,. J. Bogart, J. Hen
nessy, J. Brilatla, Geo. Hobbs, Du Laconia,

the, servant of the Dud de Grammat.
Baahlam, the second officer of the Arctic,
alsolrrived in the Europa.
When Mr. Mitchell left the ship he says Mr.
Brown's family, seven in all, were standing on
the deck, and all are supposed to have gone
down.
Mrs. E.'sK. Collins, with her son and daughter
and many other ladies, were put'in n boat, but
in the act of lowering it, all except one, who
clung to a party who held on to. the boat, were
thrown into the sea and lost.
A large boat, capable of holding fifty or more
persons, was on the deck of the Arctic, and be
ing too heavy to launch, it is supposed eh* would
be filled with persons, hoping that she would
float off when the ship sunk, and not be carried
down with her.

Dorian, the third mate of the Arctic, to Captain
West, at Mr. Collins' office yesterday, differs very
materially from that furnished by the second of
ficer.

dy and slaughter of Mr. E. Collin* were not the
parsons lost by the giving way of the tackle; that

self, and that said beat pushed from tho chip
long before the drowning of those supposed to
have been the persons alluded to. ,The boat was
well provisioned, and the most confident hopes
are entertained that the sufferers have been pick
ed up, and Bea they will be restored to the em
brace of their heart broken husband and father.
This boat most base beet that first sent from
the ship. It had a compass, water and provis
ions for fourteen days, and was under the charge

company with the family of the Browne, (of the
firm of Brown, Shipley & Co. of Liverpool ;) that

We learn from another source that the Sheriff
was seized and tied by the mob before they,
proceeded to their murderous work. . This
one of the most daring outrages ever perpetrated'
in. Maryland.

"Mahlon Day, wife and daughter, were on
board the Arctic, and are supposed to be lost.—
Mr. Day; for a long period, kept a stationer's
store in this city, and was known to a vastnum
ber of our citizens. He was about 65 years of.
age. 'Mr. North; as we are informed by one of
his relatives, was James E. North, of the firurpf
James. E. North of New Orleans. He was 'a
brother of William North, of this city, and alai
of' Professor North, of Yale, College. By a
course of prosperous business, he had acquired
a large property. Edward Sandford was one of
the brightest ornaments of the. New York Has.
He was One of the speakers at the first great
Union meeting in Castle Garden. Mrs. Scott was

ror of the trial, that when Mrs. Loring, the wife
of the murdered victim of passion and intemper

introduced as a witness, when she had proceed

ago to the post which he was on his Way to fill,
but his.departure had been repeatedly pat off

was a lineal descendant of Count. Philibert Ass
