From a circular lately issued by the Company
we glean the following facts' which nifty be new
to some of our reader.: i
i 6
The Ohio and Pennsylvania Ra ilroall; 187
miles in length , wee completed and the
trains commencetrunning on the 1 th of May,
1858. The road is of the most substantial char
acter, with rails of the T pattern, GO lbs. to the
yard.
Prom. Pittsburgh to Sewickley, 12 miles,.the
rood has a double track, and at intervals of four
or five miles over the entire line long "sidings."
The track is of the Ohio gauge, 4 feet 10 inches,-
connecting with the great system of roads in the
State of Ohio, over which the trains of all can
pass without tranabipment. . .
The Company own 41 locomottees and 687 can
of various Ends, of the estimated valise of $760,-
000.
The following summary exhibits the.cost of
rho Ohio and Pennsylvania Railroad to this date:
Cppital stook paid I) V 2,224,100 00
Mortgage Bonds ' 1,750,000 00
Income do • 1,675,000 00
Fl,,ating Debt after deducting
available means
Total $6,830,140 70
The Company own the following
assets, which will prow., avail
able in a short time:
Mortgage bonds, Ohio and. Ind.
Railroad $300,000 00
Stock 100,600 00
Stock, Springfield
Railroad - .62,500 00
11.AI:wing the actual coat to
The Income Debt was about $95,000 greater,
but that amount of the bonds has recently been
surrendered and converted into the stock of the
Company; and it is, supposed the progress of
conversion, will be accelerated, and a much larger
amount retired and converted into stock, during
tho ensuing year. •
The Directors avow that it is their purpose to
enter into no obligation, either for construction
or any other account, flirther than Is necessary to
keep up the line and_provide for its increasing
business. This is correct policy; but considera
ble outlay will be needed at this end of the
road to complete its connection with this city,
and provide adequate facilities for the rapid and
safe transaction of a large freight 'business. At
present the Company labors undergreat difficul
ties in this respect. The Directors also announce
their intention of setting aside $25,000 per annum
out of the net earnings of the road, to be ap
plied to the liquidation of the income bonds. It
is believed that this sunctogether with the prob
able surrender of bonds for conversion into the
stock of the Company, will entirely liquidate the
issue of Income. Bonds. Bat if it is found at the
end of two years mom the first day of, January,
1855, that the bonds are not thus being surren
dered insufficient amount, with the before men
tion pay433ents of $25,000 per annum, coproduce
this result,, then the Board of Directors will make
provision for a sufficient increase of that amount
to meet the case, so that the income bonds will
be provided for by or before their maturity.
This is a movement in the right direction, and
detervea the highest 'commendation. We trust this
pioneer Pittsburgh project will be a safe example
and guide for all our Pittsburgh enterprises of a
similar eharacter, and that they allmay be equally

The career of Douglass in Illinois, since be
turned a sumzuerset into the Abolition ranks at
Chicago, amidst the jeers of an appreciating au
dience, has been painful and humiliating. Where
'ever he the gone the people have put him to tests
to prove his - sincerity or hypocilay of his new ab

factory answers have voted him an incendiary
pro-slavery agitator.
But Douglass has an ally upon the bench in Il
linois, who decides that men . from a Southern
State without a particle of authority under Illi
nois laws may sieze, shoot and slay in the public

open the eyes of the people to the infamous doc

our sense of dependence on the providence and
