Over coming, then, for a moment the disgust and rooms which as men and christians we cannot but feel for the sentiments embodied in this extract, ue shall endeavor to show that the claims thus set forth have no foundation in the Constitution, in equity as between MID and man, or in moral- It is said that "the property in slaves is reeog oats, by the Constitution." and many honest men among us have been troubled by this declaration iterated and reiterated in a. thousand forms by the apologists of slavery in the free states, as well ns by its advocates in those which are not free. The assertion la utterly false. It hiss no parti cle of truth to Stand upon. There is no little of fret in which it could have had ,its .origin an feeble pretense and thus by degrees have grown to its present proportions as a confident averment of right. The Constitution does not recognize flares ai.propyfty ;- but on the contrary contains within itself proof that its framers intended to exclude the presumption that men could be hell hs property, under its authority. The word SLAVE is no where folinil in the Constitution,— la every passage where reference is made to that class of inhabitant`•, the word remind in used. The word slave was used in some parts of. utne - Mments and projects offereetfor incorporation into the constitution, but exception was taken to use, because the idea of property would or might follow, and that word was utricken out wad "Person" substitute,' in every instance.— We believe there are but three references to tdavesoralavery in the constitution. The first is in that section by which 'ginet:fifths . of .1)11 other persons, including indansnot taxed" arc added tothe white population as the basis of rep resentation in-Congress; the next to in that clause whiCh allowed the importation of such persons as the. State chose to admit, until ISQS, and the last ii.tho provision about persona held to labor and 'nerri&c"—whether white or black, which is the pretext* authority-for the fugitive act. The fathers of the consti twtion loathed the word slave, they would not recognize it, nor admit it into the great inanument _ they were forming. Wasumccres, Sept. 29, 1854. Notwithstanding the positive statementa that a treaty has been received and is now under consid eration here for the annexation of the Sandwich Islands, I assure you such is not the fact. No treaty at all has been received, nor has any ma terial progress been made so far as the govern metals advised in the negotiation for the acqui sition of the islands during many months. That island is yet as distant as the annexation of Cuba. Soul, has written an angry and Prenchy letter at the public concerning the charges against him in the Spanish papers, which were doubtless published by direction of the new ministry. It is reported here among the foreign legations that Mr. Sento has been sent away in the style of-. Sir Henry Milner five years ago. This seems to me probable, notwithstanding our minister's lettAim. lie stands condemned on the charge of improper ly interfering in the civil disputes of Spain by his letter to the revolutionary club. The tables have been most beautifully turned on the admitaistratihn in its attempted anti-“ Know Nothing" agitation. The closing meeting of the Whig, Democratic and Know Nothing opponents of th - e new project for exciting the public mind and producing new issues r held on the 27th inst., was en immense and enthusiastic assemblage.— The resolutions administer a well deserved and re vere castigation to the office holders who thrust themselves into the controversy. They express the almost unanimous sentiment of the people of Pennsylvania and New York in the important elections 'theta to take place there next month. The meetings of the office holders were held for the purpose of manufacturing a spurious public opinion to operate in -those States, in the pal election of Baltimore next week, and their failure has been complete and humiliating. The leading. feature of this popular movement is the spoutaneous, upheaval of the mas s es in all those localities -where foreigners are numerous , enough to make their influence felt by the native inhabitants. No leaders 'have been required to excite thin feeling.. In fact it has been so strong as to require, but almost to defy control. The proximate canoe of this 'sadden impulse of the American mind may bi found in the Remit& -Crusade against the Public Schools, in the at tempted suppression of the Bible, in the insolent denial by that priesthood of the sacredness of Protestant marriages, and in its efforts, at once losidionrand audacious, to act into their hands the vast 'property of the Roman Catholic sect.— flow far the movement will proceed, and how long continue, is doubtful. I hope It will lead to such-radical reforms in the legislation of the sepa rate Statuses will eillictually protect our common school system, as will keep Romanist church property in the hands or under the controlof the laity, and as will protect not only that property, but our holy institution of marriage from foreign ecclesiastical emissiaries; and, I may add, such a change in the naturalisation laws 118 will pp t, *Wet the right of suffrage in American citizens. Some wag has Nit in circulation the story that on the evening of the second democratic meeting the President, anticipating a Know Nothing dis turbance, went to the residence of the posttests. ter general and remained with him all night, in order to share his fate if it were adversy, or to protect him from injury if violence were offering. It-is maid that the President discleites the 'system of proscription demanded by the Anti-Know Nothing zealots and refuses to sanction removals on such principles as Davis has lately acted up on. Indeed that Would not.be safe. The Ameri can people are calm, patient and orderly in their general character, but I am vary certain they would not patiently endure to see their country men turned out of office for entertaining an opin ion that Americana are good and wise enough to govern themselves without aid from abroad.
