Just now, attention is directed on all sides, to
the highly numerous class, who go up and down

One day last week a train left Colnm us, hav

sixty-two passengers, and out of thi number

Within the last few dart a Bain of oirmuostmates
brought to light a number of faigeries, which
bare startled theethole business community. A
`few 'days since Mr. Green, of the firm of Omen,

Sweater, Hutchings &,Co., and remarked that he
thought hewoald probably hare to pay that note,

produced a notoof $4600, drawn by - Walter Sher

Cn.,..widch Mr Illeighiffgsgrranouoted eilbrgery.
Iltyli Offen:fait* thtillfr.' Mntelings bed
heard indirectly that these was *considerable
amount of their paper, or paper endorsed by them,
floating about the market, and large amounts had
been diseountech but knowing he had neve en
dorsed, and refused to do so, treated the tter
as an idle rumor, or that it might hare an
other firm. When the note for $4600 was
brought to light, th e report was explained and
measures taken to find the whole extent o the
forged. transactions.
Mr. Green said be had discounted the note at
three per cent for a Mr. Walter Sherwood, who
wee weU known to both parties. Inquiry .was
made at Page, Bacon A Co's, by Mr. Hatchings,
as to checks he had drawn where the balance
was correct. but on inquiry as to his endorse.
merit Mr. Haight informed him that a gentle
man bad called on biro (Mr. Haight) that Morn
log with a note of $ B OOO, bearing Sweetie'',
Hutchings & Co's endorsement and asked If, the
parties werogood, as Le could get more Haan
1 the market rates for money and would diwount
the bill. Mr. Haight offered to take the note at
the usual rates, but the party carried the note
away, saying ho could do better by discounting
it himself. ;
The discovery of the second note prompted
further.soarch and up to yestardey .noon paper
bearing the forged name of the Arm we. found
to the extent et $lO,OOO. Notes. also, to the
extent of $2,100, purporting to be endorsed by
George 0, Wintery, and $4OO purporting to be
endorsed by Moses Ellis, & Co. were fbund, mak-
Mg a total '1)(17,600. Messrs. Ellie, Etrichinwr
and Green charged the forgeries upon Sherwood,.' '
who immediately disaPpeared, and• has not yet
been Sound. From subsequent inquiry, it arr ,
pears that Sherwood . had been for some time
bock in the habit of getting his own paper, - with
the undorsment of Eltrectirei r fink:hinge St. Co.,
discOunted and., before the. same had. metered,
either took the mitre up or had Gnu renewed.
When charged with the crime, he said he Intend.
ed to take the first note of $4,500 up and only
had the paper discounted to facilitate some of
his opperatione, hieing ample means to indent
nify.the, parties.
' The discovery of tho other paper proved con
clusively that ho was carrying on - a regular
swindling operation by the aptness of the pen.—
The forged signatures were all extremely well
done, and calculated to deceive any one bu the
parties themselves. Sherwood was formerlyem
ployed as clerk In several largo houses , an was
dismissed on account of delinquencies which were
Ironed to him. By these suicidal acts he has
plunged an interesting family in distreis, and
ruined himself. It has been stated on geed au
thority, that some time since a forged check
for $2,600 piirporting to have been drawn by
one of our first mercantile houses, had been pro
seated at the banking house of Burgoyne & Co.,
and cashed. The money was subsequently re
covered and the forgery fastened ou Sherwood.
The signature was so well done that the.meni
hers of the firm could not tell the-forgery from
the genuine. It is hoped the pollee may find the
forger and bring him to justice..:
