As bearing upon the present sentiments and
position of that gentleman; the letter -deserves a
perefal perusid. Aside from 'the fact that Mr.
For Ward was running as an opponent of the reg. ,
ular democratic canffidate, and was. supported
by Mr. Mader es such, we ask attention to the
opinions of the letter Itself. Observe bow Mr:
Studer (always presuming ham to be its author)
alludes to the South as thaimottly not only of
,our loeakinterests but of a protective tariff and
internal improvements by the general : govern
ment; and how indignantly a breach of natiotilal
faith and violatiOn of a soleinn corapact so re
buked: - Who, rending tide letter, would suppose
that the same CII4BIIB glisten is-now ems of
the warmest friends of flit &fah which he then
denounced; that he now opPoses a protective
tariff as bitterly as the South did then; that he
also now repudiates the dictrine of internal 'im
provements by tho general government Which he
then endorsed as National and eminently vise: .
and, above all, that he is now the advocate of a
breach of national faith and violation of a sol

condemned! Tet so It is. The -man Who in(
1830 encouraged an opponent of ille democratic
candidate to run for Congress because the times
denumded such men to 'stand by, the cause of
protection,:biational improvements, and the filth
-,solemn compacts, is now himself the demo
eratic candidatifor Congress in opposition to all
the principles which he then endoried.
Times change and men change:-but grind.
pies are eternal. There is - - as much - nee& of
protection to 'American industry in 1841-1 an
there was hi 1850 the degree of protection

and the more so sineo our internal commerce is
annually increasing and daily demanding more
and more of the government protection from the
dangers of inland-navigation. But chief, over all
these, stand the Claims of national liner. In
those days it - was claimed that a national cote ,
