Judge Pollock; after gracefullY alluding to a
irc mer visit to this city twenty years *go, and to
tie) many Ouzel; wrought within that time, re
fored to his own position' as a candidate no one
wilch he hail not sought but had not felt at lib
erty to decline. Ilealluded 41 the leading quell
ti n before the people involved in the manage
, rannt of the public works. He was uncompro-
In:singly in favor of their - Rile et the earliest pin-
Ode moment, as the only means of retitacing and
ultimately extingaiSidig the public debt and the
eh . olition of the State Taxes. - They were now a
heavy burden riPon the people, costing hundreds
of , thensaids annually more than they yield, and
here besides, a source of corruption, which, as
patriots and. Pennsylvaniane; it is our duty to
gt t ritt of.
Judge Poillock then recurred to the question
of Education. He eulogized our present system
of Common Schools. It extended' the blessings
of education to all—rich Viand poor, high and
low, white and black. It was a great system,
and great because it made education common to
all. Let it remain common. No division of the
school
fund (cheers.) ,Let it remain inlact, that
the people may proudly point to its glorious re.
salts, and exclaim--" These are •my jewels!"
Dot if the Protestant or' Catholic Church shall
succeed in procuring a division of the school
fund, -all these results will be lost, and hatred,.
ill-will, bickering and bigotry take their plane.
I stand here, said judge Pollook,' as the advo
cate and defender of Civil and Religious Liberty,
notwithstanding the vile slanders tet the contrary
heaped: upon me; but if my church or any
other church chooses to enter the political arena
and make itself a political engine, down with it!
(Immense applause.). The church - needs no aid
from the State; it der ends upon the aid of a
higher and Almighty power; sad - while the
State needs the aid of all good citizens, it owes
it toitself to keep itself separate from all con
nexion with religious propagandism. ,
Judge Pollock then proceeded to dwell at mach
length upon the Nebraska bill and the questions
arising out of it. He sketched the course of the
founders of the government in preventing the ex
tension of Slavery by passing the ordinance of
1787, the beneficient effects of which are incal
culable. lie deplored the departate from the
policy of that ordinance which cemmenced
in the acquisition of Louisiana, in 1803 in the
admission of Missouri as a Slave State, in recog
nizing Slavery south of 38° 80' in the annexation
of Texas, and in the .villainons compromise•of
1850... He drew a vivid 'picture of the—evils of
Slavery. the existence of which he deplored, and
proceeded to consider the bearing of the Nebras
ka bill upon the extension of a mama so vile
and inhuman. That hill was attempted Lobe thrust
down our throats upon the ridiculona pleaof "pop
ular sovereignty." He was thefriend of "popular
sovereignty;" but the principle of the Nebraska
bill was a very mockery. It set popular sover
eignty at 'utter defiance, and instead o giving
the people the right tolegialate upon the subject
of slavery as they please, it actually and really
prevents them from prohibiting or abolishing it,
t was a simple scheme for the extension of
slavery under a very flimsy guise; and as such
it deserved all the condemnation that can bi
heaped upon it. Judge Pollock enlarged• upon
this point at much length, and after a general
survey of the whole slavery question, be con
leaded with nn eloquent reference to the present
l commotion in Europe, which he trusted would
eventuate. in. the downfall of oppression and
tyranny, ibere, and be folloWed legitimately here
by bestoirment of liberty upon every human
being existing within the , bomuis of our glorious

works: •
1. Ottawa:tun: An: Exposition-of the lion

son, author of the " Lord, our Shepherd,'s
"Christ, our Cress," etc. Here is s volume ded
icated to the eluaidation of one of the inimitable
pashas of David, and yet its rich treasures are by
no means exhausted. The author has done well,
has "greatly assisted the earnest and decent
reader in penetrating the depths of the glorious
mysteries of. God's love, as a stimulus to adoring
gratitude, and yet there is more to be told. The
work is well written and is calculated to cherish
a devout and thankful disposition.
2. Fwaraccz EGlneroS; or iStuishine and
Shadow. By the author of "Clara Stanley,"
etc- . This is one of those choice and beautiful
moral tales which improve the heart and the
affections while they interest and amuse the
imagination. The Messrs Carters imprint to •
book is a sufficient guarantee that it is of safe
moral tendency. This is a fact which it is well
for parents to know.
