bled at Efarrialnirg, Aug, 80th, Dr. ItObert Mitch
ell pf Indiana;Theicient,'and,Eli Dillin, of Phil
adtil3h4. 'Secretary. The following resointrons
wet* adopted and: ordered to be publisher 4 .
,- Is Resolved, That the so-milled ; Demottratic
parV, by its systematic subserriency to the Wave
holding power of the country, as manifested by a
series of - measures,' (the last of which, the Ne
bratika Kansas bill, involving the repeal - of the
Misuri oompromise,) has given the Moat inctu
bits rle evidence that it intends to submit to - ev 7l
er'S dof that power, even though it may ,
involve the Introduction of slavery into the free"'
states., ate revival of the foreign slaie-trade, and
em=
the prostration of. - the populif;:bnutitir - .r our
pc - weft:mem, by tasking, it su bservient to they
Senate, thrOugh the intro duction into that body ,
of rtirators; (the repreeentatives of.slaveholding
cons(ituf tie ie•., insigniteent inpoint of numbers;)
thus -setting L t sh.sance the will of the people;
and constituting fltt - cnly cause' to anticipate a
diasoluilou of the Union. ,
2. tßesolved, That the present State and Gen
eral Admloistrations have boldlyassumed the re
sponsibility of the above poliey, and the - Free
Deratteriey hold them responsible for the depar
ture front the policy and principles of the fath
ers of the republic. ,
3.l2ereford, That the only questions now prom-
ineptly before the people of this State are those
of liberty against slavery, and temperance and
intemperance,.and upon these issues will be de
termined the approaching gubernatorial election:
and that the candidate of the so called - Demo-
cystic party; stands before the people, as the jus- -
Stier, if not the advocate of the extension of
slavery to territory now free; and upon the sub
ject of a prohibitory liquor law (the only ade-
quate remedy for the manifest evils of intemper- '
once,) this position is unsatisfactory to the friends,
of temperance.
4. Rooked, That in view of the transcendent
importan.e of the questions now before theveo
ple, the one involving their honor and integrity,
lunching solemn compacts, affecting human lib
erty; the other; the happiness, temporal and
eternal, of millions yet unborn,. it becomes the
friends of liberty and morality to oisregird all
party ties and prejudices, and unite in one body
in opposition to an administration whose 'pleas
ures arc on fraught with evil to the human race.
A. Resolved, That, without expressing, upon
this occasion, any opinion as to the old issues
which have heretofore divided the Whig and Dew
ociatio parties, or as to any collateral or second
ary questions which may exist between them,
we cannot fail tO recognize the issues as being
fairly nzade upon -the two great questions above
named, and that the lion. James Pollock stands
before the people of the State as the representa
tive of the sentiments of Liberty and Temperance,
and shoUld therefore receive the support of the
Free Demomacy of the State.
8. Resolved, That we accept the proposition to
withdraw; tendered by our worthy candidates
for the several State offices, in order that an un
divided frotit may be presented in opposition to
the State and National Administrations at the en
suing election.
7. Rerolva, That notwithstanding the with
draws' of our State ticket, we deem itour duty to
maintain oor distinctive organization as it. Free
Democratic party. We, nevertheless, ernresa a
willingness to unite with our fellow citizens of
other - parties, at any time, in forming a new par
ty of the people, to maintain the right of free
dom, and resist th'e encroachments of slavery,
Whenever an effort to that end lawn be made.
6. Raotrol, That the Chairman of the State
Committee be directed to publish the torresporal
once between the Committee and the lion. James

England and Protestant dynasties of Germany,
and a Greek one. to supply Princes and Princes
ses of the imperial race of Russia, it is no.
longer considered to be superlatively orthodox.
The profane indeed allege that, were the Sultan '
Abdul Medjid securely fixed on his throne, wo,
should have an offshoot of the same prolific and
aspiring race trained in Mahomedan principles
for ruling the Seraglio, and that if Baron Roths
child be not paid his debt on Jerusalem, there
will be another reared as immaculate Hebrews
for the purpose of sharing the throne of-David,
which is-expected then to fall into his hands,- 1
With all that waggery, however, you are doubt-,
lea familiar. I shall neither allude to it, nor to
the equally well known story of the Prince of
Saxe Coburg who commanded the allied armies i
in their march against France in 1783, and of
whom it was said that, how conspicuous soever
be might be in bed, he would never. be distln
guished in battle. All these affairs and person- I
ages belong to the, past; they mast doubtless
be duly chronicled' in writing a history of the
family:. but etpresent I shall go no-further back
than the year 1814, when the existing King of
Belgium, who may be considered as theeecondl
builder-up of his race, found himself occupant of
a second floor over a baker's slop in the of
Marylebone, London, with an income of £2OO
(1,000) a year, sada rent of thirty shillings
week.
The curious who visit that enterpris' ing parish
may still, inspect the lodgings which his future
Majesty then occurred. Visiting London,' yowl
are aware, as an - aid-de-camp or humble attache
in the suite of the Emperor Alexander of I'rus-
eitt, he had then the good fortune_ to captivate
by bis handsome person the affections of the
Princess Charlotte, the heiress-presumptive of,
England, and all at once to start into a pa
lace with an income of £50,000:;:(260.000) a
year. That income and palace be still retains;
but the goodly looks are gone., His Majesty ep
pedrs bent and sorroow.struck, salt he were the
victim of some secret remorse, or as' if some
dreadful calamity were about to overwhelm his
house, -
He has indeed no reams to do so; for he has
been eminently lucky, end the fortunes of his
family have since exceeded all usually reCorded
in the annals of romance. He stil' retahnt all
hie enormous appointments in Eugland, though
i his wife died within a year of marriage,,tunt in
' 1880 be was supposed to have amassed half a
million eterling.when he was offered the throne
of Greece., With his usual prudence he declared
the proffer, Which fudged, if seeepted, would
probably have swept away all his savings, the
Bonds of the Kingd om having been somewhat
depreciated by the ;' immaculate British patriot
t lir. Joseph Hume and other dabbler" in that
1 species of commodity. But be accepted that of
f Belgium, which was , shortly afterwards. cruelly
I separated from. Holland, and with it received
Louis i'hilllppe's daughter, as well as £lOO,OOO
for a dowry.,
' It was now that Lis 3lajesty deieloped the
grata policy of the family, and - commenced a
system which completely tlinnt dot of the feath
er bed Lero of 1793 into the shade.. The latter
had been contented with a distinguished alliance,
for himself; the present king contemplated' no - -
thing lees 'than a gigantic achense for supplying
princes and prineesameto all the thrones of Eu-,
rope. Ins ilia view he was. dmirably seconded
by his sister, the present. Duchess of Kent and
mother of the English Queen Victoria. By their
conjoint exertions a royal nursery was establish 1
ed, and brought to astonishing perfection under)
the auspices of a German Baronness Spaeth.
The young scions of the. House of Coburg wore I
pat into this lady's hands so soon axthey camel
out of the nurse's, and trained for Marriage in a
manner positively marvellous. Boys and girls
were educated together, so that the one might
have a soft spirit, and the other an aspiring dia.
peetion. They shared alike in all their put
times and pursuits, the eons being no less re
markable fur their tastes in ladies dresses than
the daughters were In their accomplishments as
