W1L3107 !Mb ' Stotts.—The doterthination manifested in certain quarters to represe4t Judge Wilmot ass friend of Bigler, induces us to re .print the following resolutions adopted nt meeting of democrats in Sullivan county, in which Mr. Wilmot took part. The. following are the resolutions: Resolved, That we have no reason to believe that Gim. Bigler agrees with us in any point connected with the question of Slavery new agitated; we knew he recommended the passage of a law allowing slavehelders to c.rry their slaves through this State; we know „he endorses the Fugitive Slave Law, which tram ples upon our personal rights; we know his election would be regarded to every part of the Union as a triumph of the allies of slavery, and as these who are not for us, in this matter, arc againeiltfs, we declare GOT. Bigler unworthy of our support. Resolved, That inasmuch as Gov. Bigler has declared explicitly that he is in favor of re-enact ing the law which prohibited' slavery in the ter ritories north of thirty-six degrees and thirty minutes north latitude; and also in favor of the manumission of any slaves illegally - held there, he oceuOies a position so much more just and liberal than Goy. Bigler, that (without endoining the cau tious address of the Whig Central COmmittee) we esteem it our duty to give , Judge our full and active support in the coming election. Judge Wilmot made a lengthy address to the meeting which passed these resolutions, and they aro not only the legitimate consequence of the positions advocated by him, but have his sanc tion and approval. The Chronicle wishes to low how many were in the late anti-Nebraska Harrisburg Convention, and by what authority they were called together. It also insinuates that the result of its delibera tions was broright about by a few Whig gentle men from Philadephia. The Convention, the Chronicle is informed, was called by the Free Democratic State Committee, and the call was extensively published through out the State. The attendance-Of delegates was respectable, and a large part of the State was represented. The resolution,. to accent of the withdrawal of all the nominee's on the Free Dem , maths ticket, and recommending Judge Pollock for Governer, was adopted unanimously, and let ters were on hand from. all parts of the State recommending the adoption of this course. For thermore, the Chronicle is assured, there were no Philadelphia Whigs in attendance at the Conven tion; and Judge Wilmot, although not present, was understood to coincide with the views which prevailed there. WESTERN UNICEESITY.—To=morrow (SMUT day) evening, at 5 o'clock, the corner 'stone of the new building for the Western University of Pennsylvania, will be laid with the accustomed ceremonies. The lot they have purchased cost $8,200, and the building is estimated to cost $13,000; so that they have enough and a little over to complete their task. Robbed by Marcy of the honor of settling the old standing family wrangle about the fisheries, Old Back" has lighted upon the Central American difficulty as the question on which to acquire a name' in di plomacy. By the achievement of concluding this vexatious dispute Mr. B. expects of course to smooth the rugged ascent to the White House. lt is observable that to make a reputation in this line of service Old Buclrneeds to do something. The diplomn4 of the government from 1845 to 1849; while he.was Secretary of State, was the reverse of brilliant. By a gross blander he fur nished Santa• Anna a passport and travelling ex penses, in order to facilitate his return to Mexi co, as a means of securing a speedy peace.— Santa Anna turned out to be the only man who could possibly have continued the war another month, and he did continue it most ably and gal- . luitly another year. Mr. Buchanan, by official acts, admitted some of the most important of the British pretensions in Central America, the sub ject of this very controversy., The same Minister set about mirchnising Cuba and began by offering a hun Iced millions of dollars for. it; The whole correspondence on this euhject was such a reas ter piece of diplomatic; incapacity that President Pißmore - thought he could not Mortify the Cu beneers and their friendaworee than by publish ing it in a mass. So he threw It into the House , of Representatives. The treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was one of the most absurd and unreasonable that a con quering nation ever accepted or submitted to. But the most glaring and flagrant instance of Mr. Buchanan's mismanagement as a negotia tion was witnessed in the capitulation by which we surrendered nearly five degreca of Oregon to which our title bad been officially and democrat ically proclaimed...clear and unquestionable."— That fine region large enough for three - Stater, tegether.with Tan Contra's Island, of Sufficient. extent for another, was thrown away in a man ner so unaccountable an to remain to this day a wonder and a shame, a mystery and a reproach to the nation and the men who then acted for it t Suckers - some of Mr. Bucbanan'e antecedents, and upon such a history ho hums over the new leaf of our important if not corlnsiftinegotia tion relative to central America: Old Buck began by telling Lord Clarendon that the "abject was getting stale and that as a Unit ed Stateser he demanded that the negotiation should be taken up where it was left oft' by Mr. Everett is 1658, and that wo must have all our rights recognized:- Lord Clarendon replied in elTect, ."Tery well; pitch In." In my opinion the whole disturbance has been raised as au expedient for directiog the attention of the people from the outrage of the repeal of Missouri CoMpromise. It will hardly have that effect. England is too busily engaged in the Rut to take up this apparent defiance. The hirc.l organs of the administration will not have the opportunity yf spouting out, "see the British Whigs," "mark lie 'traitorous sympathizers with England;" and !won. The people. look upon this affair as a private fight between John Bull and Pierce and his Cabinet, in which fair play requires that the parties should be left to dis pose ()Cone another. The case of this devil and the bear is not a bad illustration of the matter as it stands. The successor to Burt's place in the Treasury, lies between Guthrie, late Mayor of Pittsburgh, and McDonald, of Maine, er. M. C. The fatter will probably get it, as the salary is about the price for which he sold his vote on the Kansas- Nebraska bill. The promotion, too, would be pe culiarly appropriate. The Sovereign Pontiff is, under Ood, the fountain of ail authority we respect on earth. We most, therefore, if we mean to be good Catholics, be truly—we like the word—the Pa pists, and fearlessly assert the Papal supremacy. We shall then gel rid of our Protestant heathen, or atheistical politics, and have a Catholic ground on which to. oppose Protestantism. This is the firl thing.necessary for us. This done, we be come politically and socially as we are in faith and worship, a united body. —Brbtrnson's olk) Review. Is it any wonder that tbe Americans view with alarm the steady advance of a powerful religious sect among us, holding principles co dangerous to the liberties and welfare of the country. It should be recollected that Broa-nson has stated that every word be writes concerning religion and the church, it examined, corrected and re vised by the Roman - Catholic Bishop of his dio cese, and nothing is published without his ap proval. The above is, then, the voice of the Ho man Catholic Hierarchy in America of that pow erful body which is building churches, establ eh ing convents, monasteries and schools all over the land, and which already exercises a very pa tent influence in our elections.
