proprietor of the Allegheny Hotel on Federal
street, had been arrested on a charge of shooting
• . Hugh Palmer, and that it was feared the wound

learn that Palmer's wounds are not so dangerous_
as they were at Best represented, and there is
now every, reason to believe he will survive his

chair through taro bar room window. Bl'Elinnis
was shoot to speak to him relative to his conduct
when Campbell drew a slung shot and antde an

pistol at his assailant; but Campbell, dodging be
hind Palmer, escaped, and the latter .reeeived
the contents of the weapon in the aide. •

Too Rum case came before Mayor'Ad
line, on Tuesday, in which a woman named Eli
sabeth Davis was charged with larceny by John
Barr and his wife. It appears that Mrs. Davis
visited Mrs. Barr on Tuesday," when the latter
having occasion to purchase some articles at a
neighboring store, asked her to hold her baby
until her return. She acceded to the request,
and Mra.Darr left, first taking with her some
money from a bag which she & . had in a chest iu
her dwelling. On her return she found the string
of the money bag lying at the door, and coneln
, ding that she. had been robbed during
.her ab
sence, shoran to the chest, searched for the bag;
Which contained $6O, but failedlo - find it. Rey
husband was sent for, and they. charged Mrs.;
Davis with tie robberybefore the Mayor; but
s that functionary, after investigating the ease,
discharged ?dm D. for want of evidence. slrs.
Burr now became disconsolate for her lose; but
having occasion - to visit_the chest shortly after
wards, her grief was tured to joy, for she found
her bag, with its contents, safely stowed, away
in a distant corner of Uri chest, into which, in her
hurry, she had pitched it when about to go on

on the body of a young man nutted John Cannon,

butcher named &sack, and during the fight the
latter threw a knife at Cannon, the blade of which
'struck him on the thigh cutting him turerely.—
Ile was' immediately taken to the hospital, and
though ho received every attention which his case
required, he . continued to grow worse until his
- death, yesterday. In the absence of material
witnesses, the investigation of the case was ad
journed 'to 9 o'clOOk this morning; when it will be
resumed.. The coroner- had flosack arrested
and committed to jail on a charge of murder.—
Cannon was a bone picker by occupation, and
wins, - we believe, a native of Philadelphia.

that Merrick IL Dean had been arrested on a
charge of false pretence* preferred against him
by . A.adrew White, and that the case was to come
-Op for bearing at 9 o'clock before Alderman
Steele. We have since learned that White
abandoned the prosecution, and that Dean has
since sued him foe—false imprisonment, laying
his damages at $5,000. White gave bail in that
amount to appear and answer in the District
Court .

a well known Savannah pilot, died in that city
of yellow fever on Monday.
The National Intelligencer says the announce
ment of Ex-Setiat?r Downs' death was prema

The President gave up his late trip to Cape
May, bee_anse the boats from the Potomac have
stopped running. He has gone to Capon Springs
The recent stage - accident in the neighborhood
of Petersburg was much exaggerated. Dr. Car
nington was not killed. All the other parties
were injured, but are recovering.

ington- City, yesterday, resulted in, the election

PHILADELPHIA, Attgnat 80.—The express train
on the New York Central Railroad which reach
ed Albany. last night 'about seven . o'clock. ran
over two ladies at Canestota, seven miles from
Syracuse, instantly killing theta. Tbo ladies
were ascending from the mall train going west,
which was waiting for the express train to pass.
They got out on the wrong side , of the cars - and
were caught by the passing train and horribly
mangled, being. literally torn- asunder. Their
names ere not known. , .
• BCYFALO, Aug: 29.—The steamer 'AlabatiM
left at 4 o'elock this morning, bound up. She
sprung a leak about two miles out, and immedi.
ately sunk.. Fortunately she grounded on a bar'
and sunk only to the upper deck. The crew were
taken off. T here was deep water' 011 both sides
of where the Alabama went down. She was not
insured. •
