'limy of them will be surprised to learn of the systematic and extensile resort to bribery by persons who bare iiipertant private bills pending. The place where briberycdmmences is in committees, in or der to secure a favonsble report. This secured, •the ieiders of factions and individual members are spirOached, and letter writers are' set to work to manufacture public opinion. Wheedling, coaxing, feting; and downright bribery are all resorted top to say nothing of modes still more detesrible.., In relation to public bills supported by the tulmiiistration, the corruption is none the less, althoogh the means are somewhat different. Cabi net Ministers pay court to members, and polite invitations to dine with the President, or to a private interview, aro sent. Important offices, or fat contracts are promised, and even threats are resorted to with the timid. Accomplished and politic lidies send perfumed cards to court . ihry members inviting them to their fashionable soirees and suppers, and with blandishments and smiles Inre infirm members from their duty to their ocmstituents. -'The only protection the people have against • these alarming erns, is to select upright and fearlesta men to represent them, and to bold them setictly acccamtable for theii conduct. Mn. It would-be a great calamity to be deceived, as one 'tote in the next Congress may be of the last .importance. Wo have great confidence, howev er, in Mr. Wilmot. If he ifipports Grow for a reelection, with all his opportunities of information, we must think ,that "Junius" is for once mistaken. The man who will not face in open and manly resistance, the aggressions of the slave power to-day, cannot be relied upon to do so on the occasion of a future provocation.— lie is hopelessly rotten—unsound to the core, and will sacrifice his country's highest interest and glory, for nom t paltry partizan considers- 'of the Daily PittOarati Gazette. WAsuutcrroN, Aug. 29, 1654 Mr. Bronson has accepted the liardshell nom ination for the office of Governor of New York. This .is fortrmate. It will harden the Hardshell rebellion, which was in a great measure soften ing out. Theitict will also tend to smoke out the Softs, or administration.wing of the dcmoc racy,nn the Nebraskascoundrelism. It is quite evident that they are playing fast and loose on I that issue, and it is equally clear that they in tend, the moment they can safely do so, to pro claim their fealty to Pierce and Douglass on that as on every other question. It is plain, moreover, that the flardshell plat form is now sustained by nothing more tangible nor respectable than personal malignity. The rebels aro the proper and peculiar supporters of all the administration measures and the champi ons of its entire policy. They are for slavery in Kansas and Nebraska and everywhere else. They bailed the treacherous repudiation of the Missouri Compromise with screams of delight. They swear by the Urcytown outrage as a glorious victory over "Jamaica niggers ;" and when they hear of a live United States "nigger" dragged into bondage under the fugi tive act, they are full of pions gratitude for the patriotism and humanity which consign him to such a fate. It is absurd then for them to keep nn their organisation adverse to the President and Cabinet It is impossible that they Should long remain in political isolation. They are building a bridge to the treasury, and it would not at all surprise me to nee Dickinson bitten up within a year and made secretary of that insti tution. Ultimately the Softshella must divide. The mere mercenaries will declare for the prin ciples as *ell as the offices and salaries of the administration. But a large faction, headed:by Preston King, will break the connection and'set up for themselves. It is obvious that, professing the sentimalts they do, their present position is inconsistent, hut:dilating and degrading. And all this, and more, is true, of Ron. David Wilmot and his friends in Pennsylvania. That gentleman and his immediate associates 'believe to be sincere in their professed hatred and con tempt for the pro rlarery policy of the dmito- erotic party. But they base allowed their politi cal consistency to be 'compromised by a feeling i ' tf natural attachment to a men party °rennin- Linn. Is it not time now to leave it? The Wit- met Democrats or Pennsylvania ought to reflect that the doctrines and the measures of the party have totally changed since they were recognised ns members in good'stnuding. And the Change has become as perriument ns complete. "It is now exactly eight years since Mr. Wilmot had the honor of initiating the great demecratic movement in Congress for preventing the exten sion of slavery into the territories. Aided by Brinckerhoff of Ohio, Preston King of N. T , and a large section of pure and radical demo- mats, together with the entire Whig party of the I North, he succeeded in procuring the adoption I by the House of that celebrated declaration against Slavery extension, known as the Wilmot proviso, in August 1846. But almost instantly the slave power rallied its auxiliaries within the I party. The three million bill with the proviso attached was thrown out in the Senate. The contest ovei the proviso continued with intense bitterness duriag the rest of that Congress, the democratic fragment remaining firm with the, mass of the Whig, in favor of it But Cass de sorted, and the slavery element of the demo cratic" party reasserted its strength. The tri umph of the slavery extensionists was perfect. There never has been a time since August 1846, when the cotes of a tenth part of the Democrats in Congress could have been procured for the • proviso against the dictation of the executive. And th party policy in favor of Slavery haa be come, yestly bolder and more aggressive since that time than ever before. In 1850, the fugi tive act was pas.sed,—ten millions of dollars given to Texas, and Slavery invited into and le ' zalixed in New Mexico and Utah. In 1854 the Missouri compact was violated, and Slavery in troduced, so far as_the Lower of Congress and -the influence of Congress could do it, into Kan eS9 and Nebraska. Further encroachmentsupon freedom and the rights of the free States are well known to be meditated. All the party platforms since adopted have been pro-slavery, There can he no longer any doubt that the party Is given up, wholly and forever, to that influence. Its power will hereafter be used for the unholy pur pose at overrunning all the territories with Shi very, and finally of establishing the institution in all the free States. No candid man can or will deny the perfect truth of this exposition, and in view of it, it is for Judge Wilmot, and all the noble Democrats of Pennsylvania who sympathize with him, to decide whether they will longer continue to act with such a party. There is nothing left within in it which can command their approval cr res pect; nothing which .overbalanees. or compen sates this monstrous vice, I should rather say, crime, In its Character and organization. To pro- tect liberty and to secure the permanency of the Union, it ie indiepeneable that the Democratic party stiouki be brokra to pieces. I do not care what par ty triumphs in its fall, but I say there is no gaie ty for freedom or the. Union unless this MOW trews league against both, be ground to powder. Lamentable and humiliating as the fact must be 'deemed, there is not one sound and true 'De mocratic' member of the Rouse from Pennsylva nia; not one whose vote could, have been reck oned upon against the Nebraska bill, had it been required to pass it. I am perfectly eatisfied from what I vow and heard, that Ur. Wilmot's own representative, Galtutha A. Grow, was favor able to the Nebraska bill, and that be is now de cidedly favorable to the main features of the fu gitive slave act. If I am not mistaken he voted to suspend the rules to smooth the road, for the Nebraska bill, and that vote was exactlyneuiva lent to voting for the infamy , itself, since it af forded its open advocates the opportunity for passing it' which they required. Again, Mr. Grow voted against leave to introduce a bill for the repeal ofthe fugitive act. - I believe he is in favor of the continuance of that act, withmit es sential modificatiOns, and have good reasons for that belief. Messrs. Drum, Dawson, Trout and Gamble, who, like Grow, voted against the repta- Motion of the Missouri Compromise, ail voted to suspend the roles, in short they voted with Itish- ardson, the repudiation leader, whenever their votes were required. These nen hale therefore all shown themselves false to freedom, all in fa- Tor of the extension of slavery into the territo ries, and all for the fugitive law. The Wilmot democrats must leave them, or lie deem in the same bed-with them. There can be, and there ought to be, no middle courts. I have thus at some length described the ac tual position of.the "shell" factions in New York anti of tho Wilmot democrats of Pennsylvania, because these divisions of the dominant party will exercise a powerful influence on thok elec tions of the ensuing autumn, and upon the *hole mighty struggle on which we are now entering against the encroachments of. slavery: - Mt no man deceive himself. This is to be a death etrug gle to liberty if it do not result in her triumph. There can therefore be no middle men, like Big ler, no lukewarm compromisers between duty and inclination like Grow and Drum and Trout. I do not hesitate to any that. they are no more to be trusted with the rights or honJr, of the freemen of Pennsylvania, in the approaching crisis, than the weak and miserable old Straub, or Florence,-or Brodhead, or any other pro-sla- Since writing the foregoing I blare turned back to the Gazette containing the letter of Judge Wil mot of June 29, so,admirable In tone and senti ment. THE BIIILE li Pnucm SCHOOLS or 'RHODE ISLAND.—COEIIIIISAOPer Potter, of Rhode Island, has lately decided against Protestant children being compelled to read the Catholic version of the Bible, or Catholic children being compelled to read the Catholic version. We quote from his decision as follows: • I hare thus far only referred to the case of Catholics and Protestants, but the same rule, of course, would govern in case of any person who had conscientious objections. Tho power to regulate the books and exercises of the school is entirely in the heads of the school committees. So parent sending to the school has a right to interfere with it, froth mere whim or caprice. for this would be to have no system at aIL But this power is to be construed subject to the great-constitutional provision for freedom of conscience. soy perfon, therefore, has a right to object in such cases from consci entious motives, and from these only. Our echool system is a part of the machinery of this State, supported by the fonds of the State, and no one has a right to use it as a means to enforce upon others his own religious views. ' DESTRUCTIVE FIRE—Loss ABOUT $25,000.- 1 A fire broke out Saturday night in the corn-mill of Mr. H. W. Hawes, situated between Shelby and Campell and Jefferson and Green streets.— After the entire destruction of the mill, 'which .was a light frame structure, and one of but lit tle value, the flames communicated to the lum ber in the yard of Messrs. Holing, Lacy & Co., in which was piled about a millionfeet of the fin est selections of pine lumber and a large lot of shingles, all of which lumber wars consumed.— ' Messrs Holing, Lacy it. Co's loss cannot be lees than $1.5,000 to 5113,1k10, not a dollar of which was insured. The fire extended across Green I•street consuming four frame dwellings on the south side of Green. A new brick dwelling, near . I Campbell, between Jefferson and Green;streets, i the property of Mr. Ehrman, was an name loss, he having no insurance. Other frame buildings caught, and were partially burned, but the loss in that way was inconsiderable. , The fire is thought to he the work of an ineen I diary. The rapid spread of the flames may be at tributed entirely to the scarcity of water in the neighborhood; and but•for the well-directed ef "'"f cir• of the firemen, the destruction of property would have been incalculable. This is another I practical argument in favor of water-works.— Lou. Courin-. We have on the preceding page a paragraph mentioning the meeting of the . stockholders of the Maysville and Leiington Railroad Company at Maysville. From a gentleman who arrived - hero last night, and who participated in the pro ceedings of the meeting, we obtain some poetic. lire in regard to it. It is generally known that the company has been 'greatly embarrassed, and that the work on the mail has been suspended' for some time. This has engendered a strong opposition against the present President and Directory. The object of this meeting was to ~, devise means to ompleie the work: Upwards of $600,000 hare ems expended en it, of which $540,000 was rib ined from Now York Bankers upon the bands e company, and it will L b re quire $750,000 mo o to complete It. Th e oppo- Imola of the pte ent directory wanted that amount raised by i dicing t-ondhotders to relin qttish the bonds the company and then ob tain subscriptions them along the line of the road, and issue ne bonds to the present bond holders. The directory did think that this ar rangement could be effected, but to'compromise matters a committee of gentlemen in favor of this plan and opposed to the directory was Ap pointed to act in conjunction with the latter for its consummation. The meeting then adjourned. / . ,cuirtv7k Jour. c linowssox Tn.:I:PLATT:D.—We see it stated that the Irish University at Dublin has tendered to the Her. Orestes A.
