    Tax-banner Ma'rca,—The first part of a
ollome.and-home" game between the St.
George's Cricket Club of Cleveland and the
Olympic atilt. city was played yesterday on the
grounds of the latter Club. The attendance of
citizens was large, and the day quite propitious.
The ground, hoverer, owing to the long Eby
weather, was hard and rough. The Inninga was
won by the St. George's, but they preferred to
take the field.
• The playing on both sides was quite spirited,
ant - both Clubs made good scores. The Cleve
land Club closed their first. innings 17 ahead ;
but the second innings.' to ba PlaYod today. may
change this 'result The bowling on both aides
Was excellent, and the batting good ; but the
fielding was nothing to brag of, on either side.
Only one ball was canghthy each set of fielders,
and the players were all bowled out but four or
five. ;
Os the part orihe Olyzipie Club, Bruce, Mil
ler and Pollock made Good batting. Bruce
made one four 'one three sod three twos; Pollock
one four, one three and two twos ; Miller one
four, one.three and two twos, and was caught out
by Riddle after scoring 19. Hunt was very
cleverly bowled out by Stokes before souring any.
and Stokes was stumped out in tryiny to make a
double run. Haworth, Leech and Young each
bad bad lack, the bowling putting them out be
fore scoring more than one. On tbe part
of - the St. George's, the good playing was
mostly confined to Pellet and Riddle. Pellet
made three runs of three and seven twos, and
was nicely bOwled out by ',Mahe after scoring
81. Riddle made one run of four and one of
three, but SrCabe bowled him out on a score of
In.. Sewell had the tad lack to lose his wicket,
to Miller's bowling on the first bill, and R.
Stokes was bowled out by Sproul before making
a mark. Bem7'is wicket went down early in the
game, and Orris was very neatly caught out by
MCCabe, after scoring 6, and Hook was run out
after making one good run of three. Sedberry,
after making 7, was run out by good - fielding.—
G. Stokes was handling his bat very well, and
hail made nine runs, when M'Cabe bowled
bum out.

A splendid supper was given by the Olympic
to the St. George's, at Bennett's, "Our House,"
which passed off In the beat manner.
Stram.,ta Accuouvr.—One of the most singu
lar and distressing accidents Ire bare ever re
monied occurred about half past three o'clock
on Wednesday afternoon at the • Clinton rolling
mill, in South Pittsburgh. It appears that some
days ago the brush titi, the hill, immediately in
the rear of the mill, was set on fire, has
since continued to burn.slowly. 'Wednesday af
ternJon, it reached some logit,- one of which
served to support a heavy stone; weighing, per
hap', some 300 pounds. The logs were consumed,
nrid the stone being left without support,it roll
ed down the_hill at a terrific rate, entered the
rear of; the mill, where a man, Adam Weyland,
'was employed, and strikinghim on the head,and
breast,. it crushed him so that he. died in less
than two minutes. The distance_from the point
of the hill fromwhere the stone fell to the mill
was about three hundred feet, but it descended
with such velocity that it entered the building
withontleing seen or even beard by any of the
workmen. The deceased was a poor man and
resided in South Pittsburgh, in the immediate
neighborhood of the School Boise. lie leaves
a wife and four children to mourn his untimely
mid. The Coroner held an inquest on the body
last evening, when a verdict of accidental.death

ing the sale of liquor to persons of intemperate
habits came before Alderman Steel yesterday.—
it appears that a man named Bentara Moss,
whose father was addicted to drinkinit, and fre
quently prncured his liquor at Beltshoorer's tav
ern, in Lower St Clair, warned the latter not to
sell him any snore drink. The order was dis
obeyed, on which Moss had Beltehoorer arrested
under the new liquor law and Alderman Steel,
after a patient hearing of case, held the de
fendant to bail to appear at Court for trial•

cancy In the Select Council of Allegheny city
caused by the resignation of Mr. Stewart, the
member for the 2.1 ward, came off on Tuesday.
There were two candidates in the field, bul a
third, whose name was not spoken of until after
'the cities, of, the polls, was elected by an over
whelming majority. Following is the result:
James Gardiner 84 ; J. B. Liege 48; and John
Conley 28.
The Enterprise claims the result as a "Know
Nothine vicar,' and says "when it was announ
ced everybody was astonished; and no one could
be found who, had either Toted for Mr. Gardiner,
seen his tickets or knew he waria candidate."

ing was held in the Lecture Room of the First
Presbyterian Church, Pittsburgh, on Thursday
last, to consider the duty of the Christian com
munity on the growing evils of Intemperance
and vagrancy.' Dr. Riddle was.called to the
chair and Rey. T. B. Wilson appointed Secre—
tary.
After a free interchange of views, Dr. Cook,
Rev. klr. Nevin, and . Dr. Wray were appointed 3
committee to prepare business for definite action
at an adjourned meeting, to be held In the same

Manatn, 28th.—A decree of the Junta sup
presses the. Royal Council. Another calls into
force the press law of 1837. The Junta have
also abrogated the prohibition laid on the circu
lation of foreign journals. Another decree or
ders_the 'arrest and trial of semen!' the ex-Min
isters and also of Gen. Yants, ex-Governor of
Madrid.. Ministers are raid to be concealed in
the betel of the Diplomatic body. AI. Salamica
has been arrested and imprisoned at Albacete.
Queen Christina had not left Madrid.
The generals who commanded the troops in the
late struggle have choice to retire to a fixed
place of residence or leave the country.
The deciee inviting the Infanta Donenrique to
Valencia has been revoked.
General O'Donnell was at Cordova on the 25th,
on his way to Madrid, at an invitation from Es

BUCILAILEST, 28th.--The Russian army has
evacuated its position at Kaingeiene. The can
guard is at £3chelava, near Bucharest. The ar
tillery and baggage is marching towardl Beretli.
• PARIS, Tuesday evening.—Threes closed at
70.90; four and" a half per cents 98.59, for the
end of the month:
A great anti•slavery , conference was held at
3fanchester on the let inst. Strong resolutions
were passed for.the immedite and total emanci
pation of slaves and the slave trade, and depre
cating the acquisition_ of - Cuba by the United
States and urging emancipation there as the best
means -of frustrating the same, &c. George
Thompson was a-prominent speaker.
In the Reuse of Commons, on Tuesday, Lord
Dudley Stuart moved a resolution that Russia
has 'Violated the treaty engaging not to obstruct
the navigation of the Danube and that the pay
meta by England of the old Russo-Dutch debt
under that treaty be suspended.-- After debate
the resolution wns rejected.
A telegraphic dispatch from Vienna states
that the Russians were totally. acreated at Sto
bodjie on the 23d July, bythe Turks. They lost
2000 men and 600 prisoners were taken by-the
Turks.
The Austrian correspondent contradicts this
report.
Thirty thousand.Ottoraans crossed the Danube
at Oltenitra.
British and French officers are arriving at Bu
eharest from Shranla. -
The division of Prince Napoleon will probably
enter Wallachia first. Everything showed the
intention of making a serious attack at Bu
charest
A grand Connell of War was held at. Varna
between the allied Generals. on the 19th.
The fleets retnained at. Rutanhuk, but great
operations were evidently going on: Numerous
transports were at Constantinople, working day
and night, taking in water, provisions, and
stores.
Silistiin has been victuallatfor three months.
The King and Queen of Prussiareached Ischil
on the 3lstorhere the Emperor of Austria is
staying. A conference of great Significance is
expected.
.Important news from the Baltic is hourly ex
pected. The English squadron with French
troops on board passed Gothiand on the 27th
July.
The telegraph from' Stockholm states that
hairy canonading was heard in the direction of
Boman.. Nine ships were watching Ilelsingfors.

ment at Bomarsund. Soon the French troops
will occupy Aland islands. The main force of
the allied fleets was at Led Sound, south of
Aland island on the 26th. •
A letter from Constantinople re-affirms that
the expwlition to Crimea was positively decided
on, to be commanded by St. Arnaud with 25,000
Queen Christina is allowed to leave Spain with
out violence, bat if hostilities be renewed, she
will be removed by force.
On the 29th,the Danish government proclaim.

imperial council consists of 50 members.
