Joniv Cs usual.—There 'having been several Democratic arrivals tritely from Bedford 'Springs, the head quarters of , Locofoeo manse mettt,' the „Union has broken the long silence maintained ender the repeated attacks made on Rev. The Union assures its readers that this reser end demagogue has been, attacked " because be and some other leading Timperance men have in terfered witli• the plans di a few trickey politi cians who sought to inaki; the Temperance ques tion induiervient to mere political purposes." Both is the amount of, Gov. Bigler's declarations, lend Tem pernnee men etik•for nothing mere;" hence, argues the Union, tho Whig assaults on Mr. Chambers. Now, the Uriioti blows, if it knows anything, that the attacks on Mr. Chambers have their or igin in; loco of these things. It has ignored the one only charge against that individual, and ven tured a defence of him from allegations never made. - What we have alleged against this democratic political preacher is that he carries around with inhis electioneering tour, a private letter from Gov. Meer on. the Temperance question, which contains pledges the very reverse of the publish 4 pledges of that candidate, and thathe refuses to make that letter public. 3.1 i. Cham bers knows that the opponents of prohibition in this State are satisfied with the letter of the Governor to the State Temperance Convention, and Interpret it as virtually pledging that tone-tionary tozveto a prohibitory bill, if passed by the legislature, and, knowing this, he ,takes no pains to undeceive them, but stealthily passes through the State with a private letter in his pocket containing pledges for temperance men which would alienate from the Governor's side _... every enemy of prohibition in the common wealth. This is. a vile game of deception on the Governor's part—unmanly and unjustifiable; gnd the Rev: John Chambers, in making himself a party to it, becomes as guilty as him for whom hi labors. . It will not do to tell us that Mr. Cham bers is an "uPright" man, and possessed of talent, eloquence, energy and high moral cone allot" that he had ..ehrietian character" and "abliities of the highest order." The tree is known by its fruits. 'Upright" men of "chris tien character" do not descend to the baseness of political deception and fraud.. If the Rev. John Chambers is a ehristian and an upright man, let him act . uprightly, like s cluistian man, and not go through the State showing private pledgee of the Governor when he knows that the public _pledges of that individual are otherwise inter:: prated,. That is the legitimate work of abandon _ed politicians. let him publith that letter, if be wishes to clear his skirts of the crime of political deception. A Netter world-- a fitter world for up on mind and life; a harmonious world, adjusted to the bleat wants of our spirits, is the great demand.— And Infidelity steps in and offers the remedy for existing evils. IM spasmodic philanthropy is at band—instant in its readiness--obtrusive in most gracious aids, and consumed with burning seal to rectify every error.. The individual man or wo man—that is a small concern, Chemistry takes knowleage of atoms and Heaven counts the 'hairs of our head," but Infidelity moves on a grander scale. Persons are simply nothing:— The absorbing idea is society, and its "mission" is to conduct the aggregated mass into the bow ers of a millenium. It is to be a caravan march of disgusted, disconcerted, distressed mil lions across the Desert into the Land of Prom ise. Hence it has a patent plan for the recon struction of society. Every man is to be put exactly in his right place—every peg in its own hole in the board—Mad all sorts of interests are to be reconciled into a perfect wonderment of peace. But what of all this? Alen breathe -the same air now, and ,yet a great many lungs are sorely diseased, and death by comsumption is alarmingly common. We all drink the same water, and nevertheless, it disagrees with large numbers of weak stomachs. This grand discov ery of a general system, reducing all to a mag ical fraternity and equality, is, after all, only a showy timtalization. The most of infants are raised alike by the milk of their mothers' breasts, but we abn't see that this regimen of nature is, by any meats universally successful. lint this jealousy of systems', running, through All creation, and subversive of everything like the mechanisation of life, in specially rigid in respect to Society. Christianity has no social economy. It elaborates no social schemes. And in nothing does its divine wisdom appear more striking.— For by these very conditions—by its refusal to deal with society as society—it concentrates its mighty forces on the individual and redeems his perstmal character. if we expect to improve society, we must forget society and confine our work to men and women. Our social schemes are utter abitu - dities—rank follies--crochety_ proferlitiesthat bare no human =lung or di vine reality in them. Educate men and women —educate them in intellect, heart and life—pre rify them by Christian love—elevate them inta companionship with Christ—give them the self denial, patience, hope, joy, of the Cross—nod society will take care aitaelf. The leaven will diffuse itself outwardly and through every por tion of the mass. If eocial evils take such a form ns to become amenable to governmental action, or, in othertrords, if they pass from the department of moral life into political relations, then, organic remedies may be applied to them. lint a very small class of them ever assume this character. Ordinarily they abide on their own ground, and men are there acted on by them.— The method of Christianity is to deal with them through personal conscience and virtue it is a social reformer only so Jar as it changes the besets of men and women. It is perfectly con tent to await all the rest, knowing that from these subjects of its regenerating influence, a serene and mighty life will breathe itself forth upon the world:and transform it into its own beautiful image. , There are many reformers weak enough to think that if all labor were 1 1 abundantly emepennatel, and other social rela tions pat on good terms, we should have a gen eral Hosanna. But this is a rain expectation. If every woman were married to her heart's de light, if the world were full of homes where plenty smiled, a Paradise would not necessarily follow. For every one knows that a large part of the worst evils of society collie from the ab sence of want, care and adversity, and cense quently. it is sheer folly for no to expect a social redemption by any such means. The philosppliy of Christ is not only wisdom. • It penetrates the individual man; it sanctifies the person; and whenever this is done, all is done, at least pros pectively. The posse will soon become Hie use, if this method is faithfully executed.--Vite Fork Meer.
