Arrirsil of none=lrs—ANarratire of their
1m prison in tint.
Yesterday- morning the barque Aim C. Kim
' ball, cuteigned to C. Fahricotti, Sardinian Cull
,our at New York, arrived in our port from Leg
! horn, after a tedious .voyage of many weeks—
! On board this Vessel were, among the passengers
I.some 25 young men exiled to America-by the
j Papal goVermitetiL
! The facts connected with the arrest, trial and
I. sentence of these unfortunate Men are briefly
I as follows' ; •
During the year 1853, several Papal officers of
'notoriously bad characters among the people,
and some of whom had. been condemned to the
galleys under Gregory XVI, far various felonies,
were killed at Fttenza, where they had exasper
.atm.l the populace.bytheir overbearing and cruel
demeanor. When his Holiness was informed of
what had taken place, Iw instantly directed - the I
Governor of the city to arrest all the young men
of Foams; as the feel perpetrator of the deed
could not be discereFed. To quote from another
statement published concerning them, "more
than ono hundred youths were immediately
snatched away from tho bosoms of their families, j
handcuffed and chained, thrown into the city !
prisons, and distributed, afterciardj, among
gangs of Malefactors, whose lives .hrril been a
continual' series of robberies and murders.—
Thirty of them were sent to Romi and confined 1 .
in dungeons. Not knowing what the crime al.'
leged agninstthem was, and feeling innocent of
any offence, they at once applied to the Cardinal
Presidentof the Sacred Consults, imploring his
consideration and a just hearing of their case, !
but the Archbishop remained deaf to their .9; , 4p- j
plicationst the petition was flung aside and for
gotten. Hoping that they might be more sue.]
cessful in another quarter, they next addressed
- his Excellency Signor Martel, High Minister of
Justice.
In theie application to this functionary, the
priSonerti urged the illegality, of -:'their arrest,
their innocence, the sufferings they had endured,
although entirely ignorantof soy possible charge
against them, and feelingly represented the mis
erably destitute condition of their families, nog-
gravated at, that time by the famine prevailing
in the Rennin States. Signor Martel, with cold
blooded cruelty,to which he hypociticalty strove
to give the appearance of mercy, offered Meet Mel
choice between iflontotte of left wore to thm chain

despots of Europe seem to look upon as their . ;
Botany Bay. Against this terrible - decree all
their tears and protestations proved vain, for'
they were in the hands of a stern and unrelent
ing power that, appeared to exult in the ruin and
despair it occasioned. Let us again quote au
eloquent passage of their departure Prom Remo
and their embarcation for America. The ac
count is derived from letters received in this
city by a sympathising countryman of the on.
fornmte prisoners, similar to one which we
translate below, from the original Italian.
"On the night of the fdli of May last, the se;
pulchral silence of the enbterranean prisons of

merits notice. For the first time in the annals of
our government, to principle lots been adopted to
pension the surviving relatives of men who have
met death while engaged in the civil service of I
the country. We do not believe, however, that I
this pension would have been granted, r sore it
not that Batchelder was engaged in seeentrig the
;return Mtn slavery ofn person claimed as a run
away. That fact decided the question, and in
nugurated the new principle. Batchelder might
have lost his life in arresting smugglers, priva
teers, pirates, on robbers .of a Sub-Treasury I
vault, and we never should have beard that his
widow was entitled to a pension. The very hill
to which this Bachelder pension was tacked to,
as an amendment. has been before congress ever 1
since the war of 1812. It was to grant relief to
Betsy Nash, the widow of a gallant officer who
suffered from disease contracted in the public
service in IBl2,when on duty at Socket's harbor.
The bill has been knocked like a shuttlecock,
from one branch of Congress to the other, for
more than thirty years—first, one branch would
,pass it, and then the other,. but never both at 1
the same aession until now; when the Mouse, by;

probability that the tinier:di:Vent will be Agreed
to, and tit:Avail bill will be lost, and justice long
delayed to the surviving relict of an old soldier,
must yet longer be put off.
When Vice'President Gerry died, who was one
of - thcOmost patriotic mon of his day, a signer of
the Declaration of Independence, whose whole . ',
life and fortune had been spent in the service of
his country, Congress refused to grunt's pension
to bin widow, 'and his remaining property, even
to his household furniture, had to be solePto pay
his debts; some articles of which are now ire this
city; and Franklin Pierce made 31 speech in the
Senate of the United States to prove that it was
unconstitutional to'give to the widow of the illus.
trions Garrison, the year's salary of her deeeress
ell husband, on the ground, if we mistake not,
that he died - in the civil service of hiacountry.
.. • When' we consider rho recent legislation in
Congress, it would seem as if this slave question,
like the frogs of Egypt, enters into the very beds

THE Coors AND roe short visit
to the. Country along the line of the Galen a

the craps of wheat rind oats which are nor'gen

time does one get so accurate an idea of the ex
tent of - those crops ns at this Hanson. A month
ago, they were green, and on the broad prairies
there was nothing to distinguish them, at a dik-
Mune, from the green pasture lands. Now, 'mirk
eser, their golden color stands out in marked . ,
contrast with grass and corn fields, and one can
take in at a glance the'whole range of wheat and
oats fields.. The result of our personal observe,
lion is the conviction that these crops cover near
ly fifty per cent,. more acres'. than ever before;
and the fully accords with tho other observing

TUE SA L 6 or SITKA.—The arrival of Dr.
Thomas Cowman, by the steamer Indiana, is an
nounced with great flourish in the New.. York
papers, which report him to be chirgedwith
despatches flout which he has already
forwarded to Washington, offering to sell Sitka
to the United States. The terms, it is riiiii ; are
very mivantiagecus. Dr. Cottman, it appears, is.
an American, is citizen of Louisiana; but hdbas
been for some time in St. Petersburgh, and, ;Os
said, is held in high consideration by the Czay.
(lee would infer so front the inflated account he
gives of his own consequence, for he pretends\
not only to give the Czar's uttered opirdons upon
almost every subject connected with tbeEastern
quarrel, the growth-and' gientuess of the,Unitiid
States, but even his private views upon subjects
which wren the' wiliest diplomatists of Europe
could not draw from him. •
Rpt leavinp, the Doctor and his despatches for
time to unfold their purport, let us i•CO what is
proposed to be sold. Sitka lies near the coast .
in front of the itaissian settlements In North
America. It is one of a group of islands known
heretofore as King George the Third's Archipel
ago. Tine population in 1863 amounted -to 807
persons, of whom 1:14 RCM Alentes rind Kolosks,
307 the descendants of Europeans and native
women, and the residue Eitropezins—chlefly
Russians. Tito harbor is good, but yet f0r.120
days R. rained there incessantly, and for 180
other days, chewers were freanent. The whole
coast is humid and subject to the heaviest fogs,
which brood over the m e tine region. Grain' can
not he cnitirated otrtho island. A few vessels
are built there, but the chief industry is the
curing of fish, for which salt is obt4ned from
the Saudwich Islands. , The. town is•fiAre as
semblage of wooden houses, with that usual ap
pendage of Russian towns, a fortress. From
thence the Fur Compkny directs its trade with
Russia proper,
and also to a- small extent with
China and the 11.4rqu - esas Islands. Of late years
ice has been sent front there to California. • Its
whole trade does not exceed half a million of
dollars a year, and is rated by many at a meek
lower figure. Asa bashes' for whalers tho island
might possess some advatctages to that trade;
but being separated from our own present posses
sions by the whole of British Americo, its polit
ical or commercial advantages to the United
States do not appear to ho very important.... The .
New York Journal. of Commerce gives the follow
ing as
,a good reason against the purchnso . .
"The purchase-of Sitka from Russia in the
.present state, of money affairs, would bo an act
of folly which cannot be expected from o pru
dent Government.: The whole object of the pur
chase at any time, is the supposed benefit to
arise from it to the commerce of the United
States. That rommerco would be more crippled

amount from the industry of Um country to bo
tbo purcluso of an Wand lying in the
Pacific. eight hundred miles north of the North
line of the United States, than could be comport , -
sated for in the use of the island for half a
century."
