Drama:saran Ocortmascs--Two Pinson ,
_lhowtrzu.—An inquest was held by. coroner
Lowry, yesterday, on the bodies of two women,
Who were drowned in the- 31onringaliela river,
'about six miles from the city. Trom the evi
-1 deuce given to the jury it appeared that two men ,
• named Nelson and Woods,both residents of Pee
bles township,-crossed the Monongahela river on' ,
a shooting excursion on Thursday; and 'losing
their wayin ate woods whenreturning Itome,they I
-did not reach the bank of the river opposite their
dwellings till nine- o'clock at night. Finding it I
-* Impossible to- get across at that hour. they Com
menced shouting to those - residing on the oppo- I
site side of the river to send them a skiff. Nel
son's wife hearing het liusband's voice nut to
• neighbor's house hoping.to get some boys belong- I
ing to the, fondly to take a boat across; but they l
bad all retired for the night and her mission was i
fruitless. . immediately after this, _she meta
young glil named Ellen Woods, daughter to her 1
husband's -companion, and she, being anxious
that her father should reach- home, agreed with
Mrs. Nelson to pull the skiff across;the stream.
Meeting another lady,attra.Lytle,theS, proceed
ed to the river together, and, though she sought I,
to persuade them - from the enterprise, - they en
tared the boat and pushed out from the shore.—
. They had not got-marry yards from land when . .1
- the skiff became unmanageable, and instead Of
gliding smoothly along the stream, iteonunenced
to' whirl aroutid on the wsterto thd great alarm
of the terror stricken women. Alter.several in- I
effeernal attempts to propel the skiff, Mrs. Nelson
proposed
that Miss Wonds should take bold of the
oars herself, as one Might be more, successful in
mannging the skiff than two; she consented, and
Mrs. Nelson was in the act of passing to the bow of
the skiff to permit Miss Woods to take thenars.;
when she unfortunately lost Ler balance, and sots
Into the water. Miss Woods, alarmed at the acci
dent and losinglarpresence of mind,:also fell out
of the stiff, and; though everything was done to
alarm those residing in the neighborhood by elk
woman who had accompanied them to the shore,
. and who witnessed the entire scene, the parties
were drowned before assistance reached them.—
The body of Mrs. Nelson was recovered shortly
after the adeident; the lady was the mother of
throe children; end 'was much respected by her
neighbors. Miss Woods.wns about sixteen years
r of ago, And was n sprightly intelligent girl; her
body was not imeertsl till yesterday. The ju
ry returned s verdict of - accidental drowning.

Mlleo, Wm. M'Langltlin, and Mrs. Juston.—
These parties lost a large share of their fur
niture. and some clothing. Mr. M'efellaud is
iusured.in the Northern .Protection- for $750.
His loss will' reach $l6OO.

This list comprises all the houses injured by
fire; several rulditionardwellings in the vicinity
were also slightly damaged by water. The fire,
at one time, raged with great violence ; but ow
ing to the praiseworthy exertions of 'the fire
Companies in attendaueo it was confined to the
houses among which is broke on t, end extinguish
ed with all possible despatch. It is not known
how it originated, but it is supposed to hare re
milted from accident.

clause, increasing the pay of- comissioned officers
was .strichen out, and erthont concluding the
subject, the committee rose nud the flown ad
journed.
SENATE.—Yesterday, after a long debate on
the General. APPropriation Bill an amendment
was adopted increasing the salary of the Minis
ters to Frunce and `Lagland to $1.5,0d0 per an
num without the usual outfit heretofore allowed.
• An amendment increasing the •FnUries of the
cleiks in the Mint !nal the officers of the Trea
sury 'Department was also adopted.
, The bill was then passed—yeas 25. nays 18
WASHINGTON, July 28,
Stare.—Mr. Pearce offered a resolution call
ing fur information respecting the burning of
San lean by Copt. Rollins. Agreed to. •
- Mr. Mason moved an executive session. Idols ' -
was lost.
The Senate took up the . ,River t and Rarho bill. '
The Post Route bill was received fro the
Rome and passed. -
All the amendments to the River and arbor.;
Rill were concurred in. In the bill is is PrOvision i.
giving authority to the Secretary of War, In such
cases as he may think the public interests re
quire, to cause a re-examination and survey of !
the public works hereby appropriated fur, and ;
authorizing him to raddify the present plan, if in
his judgment the publieinterests require it.
To this the Committee proposed to add a clause
giving the Secretary power to suspend altogether
the application of any appropriation, and if, on
examination, he is of opinion that a cession of
jurisdiction over the place occupied by aunt' the
' said works is required from any State in Whirls
any work is situated to the II S., report of the
some at the next session of Congress.
After along debate, without coining to a vote,
{the Senate adjourned.
I lionse.—The General Post Route Dill was
passed.
Mr. Faulkner, a member of the Committee on
Military Affairs, caused to be read a communi
cation from the Secretary of War addressed to
to him; covering a letter from Gov. Stevens, in
which the latter states that he has received in
formation from the acting Governor of Washing
ton Territory to the effect that the Fort Simpson
Indians, a numerous and warlike race, have re
cently made atMcks'ou the frontier settlements
of the Territory.and-killed some 4 or 8 settlers.
It is rumored...that Chief Justice Lander is among
`the missing. The Secretary of War says he is
unable to increase the military three there, and
asks action by Congress iu this preening emer
genoy.
Mr—Chandler asked leave to submit a Resolu
t Ron requesting the President to furnish the
Rouse such information as may have been re
ceived at the Departments relative to the destruc
t Lion of SatiJnon del:Norte, and also asking for .
the copies of instructions to Capt. 11611 ins.
The rules were suspended by a vote of yeas
132, nays 35, and resolution passed.
Mr. Elliot, of Muss., asked leave to introduce
a bill to repeal the Fugitive Slave Law, which
was refased—yeas 45, nays 120.

i Affairs, reported a bill increasing the pay of the
rank and file of the Army to $ll per month for
I Infantry, and $l2 for Dragoons, and to neour

Lieut. Ratusen. Ist dragoons, arrived nt St.
Louis on the 25th, from New Mexico. He left
Fort Union on the 3d. •

ritorial authorities will whip them into peace.--
Garland is in the northern part of the territory
examining the military posts. - Nlaj. Carlton, in

Overtook a band of Macarillos and Apaches and
captured 30 horses and ell their Camp equi
page. The Indians fled.
In the early part of the month Lieut.. Max
well, of the 3d Infantry, was killed on Moro, 40
idles from Fort Union. Hewes cue:scout against
thelndians and temporarily separated from the
main body, with ten men he met the Indians
when a skirmish ensued, three Indians were kill•
.1 and three wounded. The two who killed
' Maxwell were killed by two dragoons. Colonel
: Chandler is in pursuit of the Maearillaa m the
southern part of the territory.
Fauntlerofs command were at Diamond
Spring.. All well.
Gov. 3lerriweather was met cossiug the Ar
kansas. A good deal of delay was experienced
in consequence of the high water in that river..

ident of the Reading Railroad, suffered protect
yesterday for various engagements incurred in
his individual capacity. It is supposed au ar
rangement will be effected to resume in a few
days. Ilia liabilities arc large, but his MeettS
will greatly exceed them; they consist of Rail
road and other securities not saleable except nt
ruinous rates.
A fireman's fight occurred between the Fair
-mount and liloyamenshag hose Company. A
great number of shots were fired, and three per
sons were seriously wounded; one, it is feared,
mortally. Two arrests were made. one of each
party, being taken in the act

pus Christa reports that Capt. Van Buren with
12 soldiers.followed a party of 2 Carnanches
distance of 300 miles ' attacked and defeated them,

Two bales of the new crop of cotton were re
ceived yesterday from Texas.
The Orizaba arrived yesterday with Vera Cruz
dates to the 22d and Mexico to tho Vith. The
revolution at Idieholacan continues. Corn was
scarce. St Tabaimo they arc asking permission
to import groin duty free.
There is nothing about the death of Gen. Alva
rez. There was a skirmish and it is reported
that 'the insurgents were defeated.
It is said that a conspiracy has been discover
ed 'at Vera Cruz and there hare been several ar
rests.
