Never, in'the history of Penn z' syliania; was there a clearer and stronger line die an—sever a more distinct definition of prin• ciple. Questions of moral and social responsi bility, of infinite moment to us and to our pos terity, ' have isristin, dad' the opponents of the National and State Administration in Penasydra. Ma are united on the common ground of resolute opposition to sectional 'strife, encouraged and stimulated as it his been - by the policy and con duct of the administration at Washington, to the Interfereace, of the Government in controlling the legislation of Congress - to this end, and to the 'further extension of the institution of do mestic alaret7' in the territorial domain of the nation:- - On these national questions,' the Whig candi-. dates appeal to the people of l'ennsylvonia with confidence. Their opinions are tbosewhich Penn sylvania- asserted in ancient times, and which still are in the hearte of herpeople. Those opin ions have never been offensively expressed. the public mind been allowed to enjoy the repose! whicbt less than two years. ago, existed through.), out the land , or had a spirit of forberaance been' manifested by those who have the most reaso to invoke it, the contest which now agitates the country would have been averted. The . passag of the Nebraska bill by Congress nt the Instance of the Administration, and through its undk guised influence, and the repeal in express terms of an ancient statute, plighting the nation's word of honor that the Western territory was to be forever, exempt from ,slavery auti the dumesiie slave trade, compel the Whig party of the North, and especially the Whig party of Pennsylvania, tohreak the silence they might , otherwise have kept, end-to speak out again, in language not to be misunderstood, their ancient and fixed opin ions. To the doctrines• of the act of 1780, übich relieved us by constitutional means from a grievous social evil-L-to the great ordinance of 1787, in its full scope and all its lienificent prin ciples—to a resolute determination to effect the absolute and entire tepeet of the aggressive portions of the Nebraska bill—to the protection of the p6wonal rights of eveiy , human being under theCetuditation of Pentisylvania, and the Constitution of the' United States, by maintain ing' inviolate the trial by jury and the Writ of habeas corani---to the assertion of the due rights of the States, of the North, ns well as the South, and to the integrity of the Union, never so much endangered as when 11 wanton wrong is inflict ed—to these principles the Whig party of Penn sylvania and its candidates aresolemnly pledged. ' On this strong ground they aro content to stand and to the support of these principles we invite the co-operation of every freeman in Pennsylva nia. The Congress of the United States, soon about to disperse, and the administration or the general government have, -in the passage of the Nebras- 1 ka bill'lthe 'only measure of the present ses sion 4 anti in their criminal neglect of the greet interests of the - nation, and especially of Penn sylvania, made this single issue, and on it. till the • will of the people decide it, we are content .to Meet them: It is not an issue that we have made. It is forced open us, and we meet it calm ly and resolutely. We arraign the National Administration, aided and abetted by the present State Exeentive—for in opinion and action they are ideutified—before the people of Pennsylvenin. We hold them res ponsible for the revival of sectional agitation.— They have, by the abrogation of the Missouri line, by which north of a certain parallel of lati tude slavery was forever prohibited. aroused a spirit of resistance to eggression whichit may be difficult to appease: They hare done this wantonly, and on them rests the responsibility. We Urge upon oug, triends throughout the State, in every county and township, to-organize; and; noising all minor differences, to elect such a le gislature and representation in Congress as will give a decided rebuke to those who have anew involved us in agitation. Should such a representation bo ecured, and James Pollack be elected, (as we doubt not he will be.) to'. the ChiM Magistracy of the State, we may look forward to the time when Pennsyl vania, her interetta and" cherished economical polity, Will be no leurger - sacrificed or postponed, or made dependant on the aspirations of men alien to her in heort and feeling, when the im .provereent of her navigable streams and defetiCe of her, harbors and protection of her industrial resources will be no longer denied, and when; at no very remote period, the administration of the general government will be intrusted to those _who,. frowning down all . useless agitation, wid maintain the anpremacy of the lnw, the integrity of the Unioll, and dhe true Interests and honor of ttia nation. • That period lactose at hand.
