PVIILIO WOIIKE.—No effort has been made o challenge the correctness of the figures lately' sidduced by us showing the utter unproductive mess of the Public Works, in State hands, or to ; . pate the correctness of the coneb drawn nions roes them. The Post, to be sure, summons up that enough to say that the foot that the üblie Works do not pay is not tree; brit oven that sheet' is not impudent or green enough to suppose that its ipte digit is able to overthrow the elastics furnished by the State Records. - The only thing like nu argument used by the r 'd mocratic organs to offset the damning revela- ; ons of the Auditot General's report, is the as- Isertion t.hat the figures are brought forward, now, 71 d or the purpoie of depreciating th;i'publitt works . that they may be tirown, nest winter, at a low price, into'the heeds of speculators. The Part declares its belief that the Pennsylvania :Railroad , Company has feed the .Whig press to anderialue and depretiate the State Works, in order to ena ble that company. to purchase them for a mere song; and the setae idea, less 'offensively put, is 7, presented by the Union. According to the latter, ought tlo public improvements are immensely valuable 1' and to nil for a magnificent figure; but the Whig press hiving systematically attacked then . i, as unproductive and' comparatively Valueless I capitalists have been hindered from bidding for I them. Now let us may to the 65110/3 that capitalists generally have a ammeter for shrewdness and far-slghtedrkess, anti are not likely to be misled by newspaper, reports. They usually thaniini for themselves; and after scrutinizing the data before them, make up their judgments ;intelli gently, If, therefore, all ttus debtor of theithlg press about the Pennsylvania Improvements has, not been able to mislead and hoodwink such keen sighted %en as the editors of the Union, we have faith enough in the discernment of capitalists to conclude that they bye judged of the value of our public improvements under a foil knowledge of all theracts respecting them, and have refrain ed from bidding on them, within the limitprescri• • bed by the legislature, because convinced that they could better employ their capital. Alto' the other allegation, we do not believe that the Pennsylvania Railroad Company wants to bey the Main line. It might beinteresteri purchasing the Columbia Road, but we cannot that it has any motive for.buying the whole line even • at seven millions. Most certainly we know of no steps , it has taken to Influence pub lic opinion on the trotter; and if it wanted to ac complish the purplaes attributed to it, it would Spend its corruption fund on the . Democratic presd. The Whig papers are all in favor, on principle, of selling the Main Line for whatever 'it will fetch; tie democratic papers; opposed to the sale. are, therefore, tho ones whom a loge ebrporation, seekingto attain an end whith they •ppoie; would. employ its persuasive arts upon. ' Oarrespandeueo of the Pittsburgh Daly Clar.ettu WAEHLICGTON CITY, July 7 "Most excellent fooling i' faith," we have had • • I in the House during the last two days. Tester day the administration received some rather se vere rubs. The -Heneral Appropriation bill, a very mammoth of Democratic extmagance and ! prodigality, being under consideration, Mr. Henn, of lowa, undertook to punish the people here for having exercised popular sovereignty in their own way; and not according to the dictation of Douglass, Pierce, and their confetleratts, by electing a Whig Mayor. Mr. IL moved to de prive the Mayor of the appointment of the city police, paid out of the general treasury, and con fer that little bit of patronage upon the Presi dent. This - was to by of paltry locofoco spite, bat the egg laid by tblt Henn turned out to be addled. It was pronounced a bad egg, by the vote of G 4 to 78. Next the amendment for half to million of dol lars proposed for the Washington water works, was laid out; GO to 91. If this decision bold, the country will be saved an infliction of taxes on the same score of from ten to fifteen millions of But there is still room fora good deal of hams poen+, and I rather expect that the Senate will foistthe thing into the bill, as a Southern measure! . The next victim was the Maryland and Virginia bridge over the Potomac, which it is proposed to- rebuild, at a cost of 575,000. Such-things have heretofore passed as a matter of ( cZnao because demanded by and for the South. Dot the intervention of Nebraska prov ed a barrier to the douceur this time. — It was dispatched by a considerable majority. And then, strange to say, the bill, itself, was rejected, ayes 76, nays 82. !dr. z Benton Tabbed his hands and declared that here were three gaping wounds inflicted up va the carcass of the adotinistratlon in one day. The House adjourned in consternation, but as sembled to-day. in a more accommodating humor. The engroistoent ,of the bill was reversed, and various attempts ,were made to eject the appro priations for custom houses and marine and to put in the various rejected items for this dialrict, but all to no purpose, and then the bill passed in precisely the same' shape in which it failed yesterday, by.nearly or more than thirty majority. litre, then, were seen the effects of the lash well laid on. The bill is regarded as one of the most outrageous and extravagant measures of its class es ever passed, and the Whigs gm:Fatly voted against it. The wildest statements and the most extrava gant figures are published about the pecuniary loses by the fire on Wednesday night: Some coil - V/400,000, some $500,000, and one enthu siastic telegraph reporter .puts it up to over a million. Some specify the loss by the burning of the Museum building at 51E13,000, and we venture to say there ore hundreds of builders who would contract to put it up again for 550,- 000 or $60.000. Some call the loss at the Circus $1.20,000, which strikes us as equally extrava gant. The other buildings burned were nearly all old and unsightly, and the lots on which they stood are probably benefitted by their destruc tion. The heaviest loss in these is in the stocks of goods burned or damaged, and of this loss we can form no close estimate. But we have no reason to suppose we underestimated the total pecuniary loss by the fire when we stated it to be about s2oo,ooo.—Phil. 01:10LCILA RECOIID.—Ten gases of cholera were reported in Brooklyn on Thursday, two of which proved fatal.
