The Convention was opened with prayer by Pro fuser Williams, • On motion of. Alden:nen STILL; a Committee of three, consisting of Minters, Steele, Morahan and Bryan, was appointed by the Chair, to select ofikere for the Convention,. Dr. Prettily stated that to introduce bug- nest, be had drawn up two or three resolutions, which irimetiklyead. • They are as follows: • 1. Resolved, That the popular will insur coun ty if fairly expressed, is decidedly in favor of a prohibitory law, as a measure Called for alike by - the cause of .Inussanity, the welfare of the com munity, and the interests of religion. - 11.• Resolved, That, regardless of party distinc tions, we will support no mats as a calolidate for office who Is not a reliable friend of prohibition. t The, resolutions were called up separately, - whereupon the final resolution was read• and adopted without diecnasion. The second - was taken up and its merits very briefly &Conned, Dra:Block, - Camphell, Pennock, Pressly, Ratio, Rodgers, Howard, Mr, Halts, Rev. Mr. Hastings, Alderman Steele, Rev. Mr. Brown. Mr. - Ewing, - and others giving brief' ex _—pressions of opinion open the fact set forth. -- The majority Hof the speakers thought there would be an overarheiming majority in favor of the law, whenever citizens wooldhs.ve •the naked question of law, or nolaw,lO vote upon. Many ' facts bearing.upon the question were alluded to by the various speakers. The ditClls9ifin °copi ed- a large portion of the afternoon. The second resolution was then read and adop ted. The third was adopted with. but little dis cussion. On motion a committee of fire Was appointed to prepare hushierafor the Coavention. The Chair appointed 3lesers. 11.1'Clintock, hedgers, Marsball'and Black as the committee. Daring their absence the Hon. Judge M'Clure was celled upon for an address; . The motion to that effect being carried unanimously, notwith standing his Honor pressed in the must earnest manner to be excused. _ Judge M'Clure proceed ed to speak more especially upon the present li cense systm which he characterized as absurd in its conception, calculated to do the greatest evil in its execution and inefficient in its modeof punishment. He gave a short account of the manner in which those who sell without license are punished, showing that they in fact receive no punishment whatever, or at least insufficient to restrain them from violating to law. No law, his. Honor' said, Would be efficient, until it was totally prohibitory, an exterminating war upon the thiag; and not upon the indiridnat. There are at present in the county 1750_groggeries.— The Judge proceeded at some ledgtit, our space not permitting ua tegive a report of it, in a very interesting manner, giving facts which were be fore nakeimini, and most earnestly advocating the . passage of the law. _ • _ .
