THE PUBLIC %VOWS& .
The time fixed for receiving bids for the sale
of the Main Line of our Public Works, having
eipired; all present opportimity of selleg them
pi lost . They cannot now be disposed of without
further action, and the whole matter will come
up• again iu the neat Legislature. The whole
policy of sale or no sale is therefore now an open
question—as much so as any other issue before
the people.. •
So far as State politics is concerned, this is
Ins great question for popular conaideration.—
Pennsylvania is the most heavily indebted and
The most heavily taxed of all the States in this
confederacy; and, considering the amount of
money expended, she has the poorest public im
prtninnents of any.' We have been swamped in
debt without receiving a consideration; and we
are barely able, with the poor returns yielded by
these improvements, to raise enough money
by taxation to pay off the annual interest of our
enormous indebtedness. The question then, is,
shall we retain these -works, which produce
.al
moat nothing , and go on paying millions of inter
est,-year after year, 'without being able to re
duce the principal; or shall we, by selling the
works for what they will bring in market overt,
reduce our debt by that much, and so prepare
the way for its ultimate extinction.
'On this question 'there is scarcely a possibility
of mistaking public sentiment. All the elements
of. opposition to the democratic party are united
In favor of eSprsgly sale. A portion of the dem
maths party are
-of the same mind ; and there
Mahone doubt tiust tin...inerwhelming,majority

But how does the democratic; party, taken as
• ' a whole, stand? • How does its candidate for Gov
ernor, Wm.'Bigler, stand? It is time that the'
people should Ithow. The present is no time for
dallying. The people can infer nothing—take
• . nothing for granted, on so momentous aspiestiou.
They are entitled to an explicit avowal of the
' opinions held by, those who seek their's:id - rages ;
and any sabteritiges to avoid such avowal must
be bold and taken to be equivalent to an opposi

TWESIT-TIIIILD COVILE/MONAL DISTRICT.-
We are pleased to learn that the Whig County
Conventions held in B , aver and Lawrence Coun
ties on Monday both nominated flon.,John Alli
son for Congress. Mr. Allison had previously
received the Free Soil nomination in the same
Counties. The district is composed of Beaver,
Lawrence and Mercer, so that Allison's nothing
don is certain; but we trust that both the Whigs
and Free Boilers of Mercer will unite in the ac
tion of their friends in the other Counties of the
district, and make the nomination unanimous.—
The action taken in Lawrence was generous in
the extreme. and its imitation in Mercer cannot
tail to be property appreciated. Mr. Allison, we
may add, is eminently deserving of these marks
of confidence, and his election is certain by a ma
jority of WO. Trout, who now misrepresente
the district, in at the end othis line.
A.S6TFIEB. Manx's . Nasr.—The Post, the other
day, on the authority of some paper in Detroit,
asserted that not long since a meeting of the pro
prietors of the N. Y. Tribune was called to-de
cide what plan to pursue, 'if the Missouri Com
promisolwas repealed. Horace Greely was rep
resented as contending that a course should be
adopted; calculated to lead to the Dtssottmos
or TUE Ustos. This proposition, it was said,
met the aPproral of the stockholders, and an
arrangement was made by - which the diaunionists
were to purchase the interests of their co-pro
prietors.
The Post forthwith proceeded to saddle the
whole, Whig party with distmionism, and has
since preached another long (and generally un
read) homily on the same text. It turns out,
however, just as we nnticipated, lhat there was
not the least foundation for the story. The Tri
bune copiea the Detroit version of it and says:
We pronounce.the above a' wanton, malicious
falsehood, and demand -at .the Advertiser the
name of its trustworthy-informant. Of course
none will be given, and the Advertiser will be
left to flounder beneath the burden 'of the false
hood it has set Afloat. And the Free Press, which
dilates on the "position of the,Tribune," "the
disclosure of the Advertiser," &c., &c., will have
very little to say of this explicit contradictiOn.
Meantime the original fabrication will be spread
over the/Country by the repudiators of the Mis
souri Codtpromise as an undoubted fact, and not
one in ten of its circulators will feel bound to
notice this contradiction.
The Pod will be untrue to its instincts if it no
tices the correction, and we do not; therefore,
look for any retraction in that quarter. To pre-;
tit by in error is so much pleasanter than cor:
reeling it, that but few locofoco papers hare the
courage to take back what they have once utter
ed. Of that few the Post is not one.

mare "Fancy," from Idessns. Albert and Gardiner
of this city; and presented her to the above mei.

Equestrian, at its fottitcomiug Fall exhibition.
The animal is a very beautiful one, and we trust
that some -lady equestrians of Pittsburgh will
compete for the possession of it. We understand
that severed 'Washington and Westmoreland Co.
ladies expect to enter the field, and they must be
met with contestants from here. The Fair comes I
off during the latter part of September next.
The Post persists in asserting that. idameho -
dere cannot reach Kansas easily, and that it is in
ho danger of becoming a free State. The follow-
is an extract from a letter written in lianas, to
the St. Lonisnepublicam
'The country around is filling-up with a most
enterprising and intelligent people. Thousands
have-already come in, - and thousands are still
coming. The lands, for from ten to twenty miles

possible, and they will not be long in doing so,
for I never sow a more energetic and intelligent

the best stock of Virginia, Kentucky, Tennerne

It was large and enthusastic. CoL A. Id. Mitch
ell presided, and CoL W. &padres Thompson, of
your city, was chairman of,the committee on re
solutions. They both made spirited speeches.—
rou will receive a copy of the proceedings for
publication.".
- The proceedings here referred to are similar to
those previously given. They reserve that no
non-altiveholder shall •be permitted to come in,
that slavery already exists in the territory, and
invite alaveholders to come on av fast as possible.

person answering in many respects the descrip

Monday night last, but from some cause or oth

The person arrested bad arrived in the even

to take a back instead of an omnibus, as therest
of the passengers did, to drive to the Rock is
land Depot, the officer suspecting him, called the
driver and jumped into the hack, making some
excuse for the intrusion ; at the Depot the sus
pected person was informed that he must be
searched, which he gently submitted to, bet
turning pale as death and acting very strangely.
Tho train was waiting, and the officer imagining
that perhaps he had the wrong man, allowed him
to depart.
On the following morning some officep from
Cincinnati arriiisi at Chicago, and a fur h er and
more minute description of Arrieon being given,
the officer who made the arrest seemed top, sat
