The night of the 19th of April, 1854, will
oser be one of sad and bitter memory for the
people of. Salvador. On that unfortunate night
.our happy and beautiful capitol was made a heap
of rains. Movements of the earth were felt on
the morning of Holy Thursday, proeedeir by
sounds like the rolling of heavy artillery over
pavements, and like distant thunder. The peo
plo were n little alarmed in consequence of this
phenomenon, bat it did not pretest them from
meeting la the churches to celebrate the solem

and confidence was restored. The people of the
neighborhood assembled, os usual, to celebrate

it, is true, was considerable, but the atmosphere
was 'calm endocrine. Sur the first three hours
of the evening nothkig Unusual occurred; but at

EXECdON OF A FYLAnDtLiNT Ilsawnerr.—
recent ber of the London Dispatch contains
an account of what is called "the execution of a
Bankrupt"--a merchant of llnmburgh, who had
lately suspended payment and absconded with
all his.assets. The mode of "execution" washy
elevatingver the principal gateway of the
Bourse; a black-board, on which was painted in
white letters, the name of the merchant. The
penalty of disgrace, called the "execution of a
fraudulent bankrupt," is ordained by a law
which can be traced to the . J4th century, when
the lisaseatio league ins at the heightb of its
greatness. At that period, however, the bank
rupt's patent of citizenship and his certificate as
. a merchant were also burnt' y the hangman.
In England. however, it was formerly a more
serious affair, and fraudulent bankrupts were ac
tually executed at tho gallows, the 1 . 19 t rase on
record being that of John Perrot, n fraudulent
bankrupt who was executed at Smithfield, Lon
don, November llth, 1781. The bankrupt law
of England, although mild, modified of late
years, is still very screen in its penal enactments
against fraudulent bankrupts.--Albany MyZyter.
