turday, and made the following statement: That

James Wallace,•a hand on the boat, to put up
the 'chain; used to'preyent horses frem - running
into, the river, In consequence of several acci
dents of that kind hiving occurred to him ; that
Wallace replied that he would do so when ready:
An altercation sprung up, which resulted in Wal
lace, as, the complainant was leasirg the boat,
striking . bim with a billet of wood, pulling him

Wallace was arrested, but with much difficul

dropped.

We learn. that the Captain General is raining
black troops and ban Issued an address to the
Director General of Arms, &c., on the subject
in which ho is resolved, viz: that the banners of
Spain shall were at all hazards in Cuba. An
other address has also been issued ordering lists
to be prepared throughout the island of all per
eons liable to military duty,
Considerable excitement. was occaaioued on
the 24th by a report that a party of Americans

Slavery Convention us thinly attended and the
proceedings were very tame. The Rev. Mr.
Steen, a Unitarian preacher, - Stephen D. Fos
ter and others spoke. Foster denounced the
Free Suilers as traitors to liberty fur their-agen
cy in elevating Caleb Cushing to the Supreme
Bench of Massachusetts. No party that ever
existed iu this country, he said, had • ever com
mitted so vile, shameless,, and flagrant an out
rage upon the community. Other persons in
cluding Messrs. Sumner, Giddings and ex-Gov
ernor Bontwell were also denounced by him as
lick-spittles and doughfaces. He was I-sequel-it
-1y interrupted by mingled hisses, cheer s and cat
k'oster was replied to by one of Ids abol
ition brethren from Salem, who administered to
him a scathing rebuke.
In the evening Mrs. Emma. Coe, of Buffalo,
addressed the Convention.
