Mr. Hunt-Several gentlemen, opponents of
the bill, have requested me to consider what

hope of success. I thidlt it reasonable to ac

Mr. Stephens, of lleorgia--But the gentleman
Cannot speak for them, while he does not wish
unnecessarily to obstruct business, yet all of
those who act with the gentleman with entire
harmony, I doubt not, do throw obstructions.
- - • .
Mr. Cullum—l. have been acting firmly with
those who have.resisted what I, for one, regard
es an attempt, in some degree, to stifle debate on
this important question. I have been actuated
by no factious feelings. I have from the first
resorted to nothing disorganizing to defeat the
passage of this bill, if it is the deliberate inten
tion of the-House to pass this or any other, but
have thoughtthere has not been a full discussion.
When discussion Is exhausted, I am not one of
those who will impede legitimate lotion.—
How far I shall yield my opposition to the bill I
am not prepared to say, but will say I have been
peementea_ . in all T,have done, and will be prompt
mi in all 1 may o, tofetreettneantres that may
redound to the greetinst possible good of the
country, and there my opposition shall cease.
Mr. Stephen—The gentleman suys that be
cause there has not been a full discussion, he
thus acts. It has been so for the halt ten years;
we have had questions of peace and war decided
with less debate than has been-permitted on this
question. The majority think time enough has
been taken up in speeches. We are willing to
extend the debate an entire week contrary to
the judgment of the- House. There are men
with whom tae gentlemen acts who want a month
or a year. It is time to sound the alarm and
awaken suspicion to their ultimate object.
The Speakerpro tem Mr..Orr—The Chair sus
tains the point of order of the gentleman from
Ohio.. Stich debate, if indulged in, must lerid to
bad results. There is no debateable proposition
before the House. The question is on adjourn

The Speaker banged with his hammer and said:

The Scrgeant-at-Arms honied to the scene,
