, account en ti re ly new to no, an wee doubt
not to most of our readers. The boat was sunk
on Saturday roman last by, a collision with the
L. N. Kennet. The Kennett waabound down,
the ; they met, in broad day light, in
t h e Bi g jujy, 100 miles beloW this' city ; ' bens
were rang on the latter, her officers allege.—
(though we do not understand that a charge is
' made against the ,Kennet that she, did not ring
bar bell also ;) the bow of the Kennett struck
angularly into the"ide of the lumber, barge, for
ce tit against the bull of the steamer,,stove in
her hull, and she commenced settling immediate
ly. ,At the point where the collision took place
the water is said to he very deep and the cur
rent powerful ;, and it was fortunate for those
on board the towboat that she was notso serious
ly injured that they could not run her on a bar
(Which they did) before elm sunk.
The barge - containing coal was not injured.
That containing lumber sunk in six or eight feet,
water (on' the bar), alongside the boat carrying
the lumber in a body with it ; and the barge and
its contents were in the same position when the
Crystal Pilace passed.. We understand that the
officers of the Beaver say that 'the . Kennett pas
sed oa without taking any notice of them and
their situation ; we are inclined to believe, how
irter, it this is true. that the officers of the
• Kennett were not aware of the condition of , the
Beaver, or they would, we feel confident have
Stormed and rendered every assistance.
This is certainly a strange affair and 'needs
Clearing up. The statement
we give above is

-
The sunken boat is owned by Messrs. Parke,of
Beaver, Penn. She used to run in the Illinois
river . trade, and one of her owners, we believe,
resides at Laisalle.Thelboat was a sternwheeler,
and of but little value; the lumber, however, and
the barge, are a considerable loss.
The steamer Robert J. Ward, which arrived at
Louisville on Sunday morning, passed tun Norma
at Chalk banks, where she was lying. in a crip

other boat.
