The House yesterday evening by unanimous
consent introduced a resolution requesting 'the
President to inform the House what steps, if any,
have been taken to secure the permanent rte
knOwledginent by treaty of the Bth respecting
neutrals by the governments of Great Britain
and France and whet success had been made,
and also to inform the House whether in any
particular the Government of Great Britain hod
nail:tined to net for Spain in the negotiations con
sequent upon the seizure of the Black Warrior
and what degree of responsibility that govern
ment has assumed in the matter. The resolution
was referred to the Committee on Foreign Rela
tions.
• Benton spoke until his hear expired with
out concluding. An effort was made by his friends
tiTlet him proceed. After considerublo opposi
tion Mr. Wentworth got: the floor and yielded it
to Mr. Benton, who finished his speech. It is
decidedly one of the greatest of the session.
WASHINGOON, April 26.
SENATE.—On motion of Mr. Pierce, a bill woo
passed appropriating $5,000 for the purchase of
the portraits of the first fire Presidents of the
United States.
The Indian Appropriation Bill was taken up,
when Tarim:is amendments were proposed and
Iforsc.—The Rouse resumed the considera
tion of the motion to re-commit Mr. Bennett's
Bill, equalizing grants of land re, the several
States for Educational and Internal Improve
ments..., Mr. Bennett ably supported the Bill.
Mr. Ileister followed against the Nebraska
ill, as violating the treaty with the Indians and
repealing the Missouri Compromise.
NEW O6LiAN3, April 26.—The Texas arrived
from Vera Cruz with Mexico City dates to the
18th.
There was a great engagement between Santa
Anna and Alvarez- The latter was routed.
It is reported that 51 persons were recently
arrested in the schooner Auto near San Bias, for
landing without a passport. They were carried,
heavily chained, to the Capitol.
The barque Grapeshot is still below. filer des
tination is Mysterious.
The Bla4yfarrior safied yesterday.' The Em
pire Cityla"going to-day.
Among the prisoners taken to San Bias., were
20 Native Americans, 12 adopted, 4 English.
The victory of Santa Anna was celebrated at
the capital by a great rejoicing; there was a
general illumination.
Other accounts represent the victory as a very
ridiculous exaggeration.
The large sixatory buildings occupied by Jen
nnings, as a clothing store; and other tenants,
opposite the Park, was totally destroyed last
night. The walls fell in, burying a large num
ber of the firemen in the ruins. Nine dead ha-
lir s hare burn recovered. Many other firemen
were more or leas injured; some, it is feared,
fatally. It is also apprehended that more are
still under the ruins. Mr. Jenning's stock of
goods was insured for 5150,000, and is fully
covered:
