For the D.lv Pittiburgh Gizette.
17th of April, 1734--17th-of Apr% 1934
:On this day, just one huridred.years ago, was
bison that war between Great' Britain and
France, whose operations extended from the
banks of the Ohio to the Ganges, and which af
ter varied fortunes daring a period of more than
seven years, resulted in the most complete hum
iliation of the aggreseor, and in the most glori
ous triumph of Britain, under the auspices of that
great and magnanimous statesman from whom
our city takes its name. On this day, just one
hundred years beck; France was truly - , a great,
powerful and enter Poising kingdom. fht that day
her dominion extended from the easterit shores
of Nova Scotia, by ta St:Lawrence, the Great
Lakes and the Ohio and the Mississippi rivers to
the Gulf of Mexico. In Africa she held Sene
gal and Goree. In India she held extensive pos
sessions. Every where she had gallant, enter-.
prising and faithful troops. But on the fatal day,
17th April, 1754, lief enterprising commander,
Contreoccur, with his three hundred canoes,
eighteen pieces of cannon, and one thousand
men, French and Indians, arrived here from
French Creek, and commenced that war which
terminated so disastrousljaforithe lily banner.
What a wonderful change has one hunched years
Wrought at the head of the beautiful Ohio. One
hundred years ago Ensign Ward with less than
forty men, were the only representatives of_ the
Anglo-Saxon race, in the- magnificent valley\
which extends from the Appalachian to the Rocky
mountains, and from the great lakes to the Gulf
of Mexico, and which is now ocenpied by several
millions of intelligent, enterprising free men The
plain on which our city now stands was then co
vered by a dense forest, and the space on which
so many peaceable citizens now quietly and safe
ly pursue theirdaily avocations, was then occu
pied by the feeble party of Ward, on one aide,
and the gallant French men, the light hearted
Canadians, and the Mood-thirsty Indiana.. Then,
instead of the rumbling or the railroad car, and
the shrill whistle of the steam engine, poor Ward
was, no doubt, startled by the fierce war-whoop
of the Indians, and the sharp report of their
rifles. Perhaps on the very spot where I am now
penning this paragraph, Monsieur Contrecceur
may, one hundred years ago, have indited his
summons for the surrender of Lieut. Ward. On
this plain Ensign Ward, having no means of re
sistance, under, the counsel of Tanacharison, a
chief of Six Nations,- attempted to gain AU-
G° time by diplomacy. But bluff old Centre
cam would have none of it, he would take no
thing but a categorical answer, pea or no, and
Ward had to submit. In the words of Bancroft,
"Only thirty-three in number, they, on the 17th
of April, capitulated and withdrew. Contrecceur
occupied the poet, which he fortified,,and from
the Governor of new Franco, named' Duquesne.
The near forest' trees were felled, and burned . ;
cabins of bark, for barracks, were built around
the fort; and at once, among the charred stumps
wheat and maize sprung up on the scorched fields,

To England were ceded, besides islands in the

Canada, Acadia or Nova Scotia, Cape Breton and
ltaletendent islands ; and the asberion, except
that France retained a share in them, with the,
two islets of St. Pierre , and Migmellon, as a shel
ter for their -fishermen.
Truly France had ample time and : leisure and
nelson to regret the arrival and conduct of Cen
t:rectum, at this place. No doubt a removal of a
dangerous neighbor from Canada hastened the
day of our independence, and probably the pre
sence of French troops among us during our
struggle exposed them to the infection of those
opinions which aided to bring on the French
Revolution.
One hundred years have passed. Strange
changes have indeed intervened. France strip
ped of her colonialpossessions, is still groat and
powerful. England deprived of all the colonies
planted under her own auspices, and holding
those of her viral, is the leadingpower on earth;
end now these two nations greatly Moralized in

speech, after which the Rev. It. A. Carothers
delivered a very logical and impressive tuldress.
R. D. Lawson, Esq., then set forth id a laconic
manner the reasons why said territories should
remain as they are, free; and, on retiring, he
moved that the Chair appoint a committee alive
to draft resolutions, winch motion was sustained.
The Chair then appointed R. D. Lawson, John C.,
