Tbetelegntiolt has informed our readers that
the Trustees of Holy Trinity Catholic ChurCh,
otinief of Birth sad Epruco, streets, Philadelphia,
are now in prison, by order of Judge Woodward,
,• of the Unpreine Cenft — of this State, for refusing
%o give vp the Church to the Bishop. We know
. -- nothing of the particular merits of this case, nor
the reason which has induced Judge Woodward
to resort to the extreme measure - of imprisoning
,•the Tilmthes, but we do know that the reason
they's:* th.prison is, for resisting the demand of
the Bishops to possess.themselves of all the real

way thi Trustees have rendered themselves lbt
. 'tde,to;punishment in their efforts to protect their
• religiOus 'rights; we are not informed, .but we
knew they are contending - f,;rs great principle,
and are sufferers in a righteous cause. We littlo
thought when the imperious demand was made
- by the Papal Hierarchy that all the property of
the Church in America should be placed in their
hands to be held and used at the pleasure of the
Roman Pontiff, that we should see American ait•

indifference of the American people, who will
not see the power for evil which is advancing with

, We find in the Philadelphia papers the pro
. cieedings of an'indignation meeting, held •at the
Chinese kfuneum, by members of the congrega
and others for the purpose of expressing
their opinion of the Outrage inflicted upon their

German and English, and the following resolu

[DEVOCIIATIC TMIUMPZIB.--The Post endeavors
to revive the drooping spirits of its friends with
a fanciful catalogno of democratic triumph.—
We extract its list, merely addin,T, a few remarks
by way of illustration:
"Concord, N. If., the hot-bed of Haleism,
Whigism and Abolitionism, has re-elected a Dern
.ocraticYor by a handsome - mijority."
So far from being the "hot-bed of Haleism,'
&c., Concord hits almost universally been demo
cratic. The, "democratio mayor" in the late
election, was re-elected, showing that the city
was locofoco last year; but the "handsome ma
jority" was fifty or thereabouts—nothing to brag
• , of in a city Which claims the .Prosident as' its
eitiSea.
'"ln St. Louis, the whole demoiratic city tick
et has been elected by over. 500 majority. How
is elected mayor."
The Post forgets to add that "the democratic)
city ticket" in St. Louis was a Bealod cold anti-
Nebraska ticket, throughout. The administra
tion derives less satisfaction from ouch triumphs
than the Whigs of the North do. -
• "In New Orleans, the Democrats have elected
their mayor, (Gen. Lewis,) two recorders, and a
majority of aldermen."
Not guile "a majorityof aldermen." The ma
jority is the other way; the "Reformers" haring
beaten the democrats on all the city officers ex
cept mayor and recorders., and elected a majority
. of aldermen atul assistants.
. - -•
11 11ildiliraukie, Byron Si'bourn, the regular
Democratic bandidate, - was elected on the 3d inst.
by 00 majority."
Mr. Si!bourn was opposed by the administra
tion paper and "the regular democratic" foidea,
and was elected as the Free Soil and and-So
bieski' candidate, in spite of tho opposition of
the-Pierce office-holders. '.
"In Cincinnati, Democracy is in the ascendant
—the result of the late election."
In Cincinnati•the laigestptul of the democratic
ticket wasdefeated—the independents having
elected the largest part of their ticket.
• We wonder what the Post is crowing about.
The_Port admits that Connecticut has disap
pointed all expectations, this time, but hugs New
Hampshire to its bosom, claiming a majority of
20 in the legislature. That is a delusion which
will be dispelled in June, when the legislature
meets.
in the meantime, has the Post heml anything
from Rhode Island? or from the municipal elec
tions in Hartford, Jersey City, Cleveland, Colum
bus and Louisville? Those Who seek to trumpet
democratic triumphs over the country lied better
look at the facts.
While our neighbor is rubbing his spectacles
to take a clearer view of the field, we commend
tx his notice an extract from Edmund Burke's
paper, who is probably nor - unknown to him.—
That gentleman, after tracing the history of his
connection with the Democratic party for the last
eight - months, draws the following picture of the
Democratic party of the North: . 'I
-- •
"In Maine, the Democratic party is disorgan
ized and defeated. In New York, it is in a con
-1 dition far more desperate. In New Hampshire,
I with the aid, of the National Democrats—who
hare been persecuted and proscribed by the Pres
! •
ttleat and his minions—the Democratic party is
arely saved from defeat. In Alsassebusetta,
there is no Democratic party, nothing but a poor,
mercenary,: unprin'cipled, contemptible faction,
calling themselves Democrats, who yearly coal
lesce with the Free Sailers, and who support the
Administration nominally, only in consideration
or the crumbs which fall trona the Executive
table. In Vermont, there was never a Demo
-1
cratic party worth saving. In short, in every
State'north of Mason and Dixon's line, the De- 1
meeraey is more or less demoralized and disor- 1
gazuzed; and at this moment, Gen. Pierce,if he I
were before the people for re-election, cou ld not
carry one of those States."
The Poe! says that the Nebrneka bill "merely
I provides that the people of that territory or
State may regulate-their own local affairs, in the
same way the people of Ohio and Pennsylvania
now, do theirs; and may decide for themselves
the lineation of slavery or freedom." If the ad
litor of the Post does not know better than this,i
it is a pity of him.'-The Eebraaka bill provides
nothing of the kind. Mr. Chase, when the bill
was before the Senate, offered an amendment
giving to the people of the territory the power
to prohibit Slavery - therein, if they saw fit, which
the democrats of that body voted down. -The
Southern friends of that bill unite in denying to
the people of any territory the right to prohibit
Slavery. Even air. Douglass, in his letter to the
Chicago clergymen, contends that the operation
of the bill will not inereasethe number of slaves,
but only transfer them from Kentucky and other
slave States to Nebraska; than admitting that
the practical effect of the bill will be to intro
duce Slavery into that region.

The Senate . ls again in protracted labor with
its embryo treaty as a substitute for Gadsden e.
What the result will be is of little eodsequence.
Ilia believed that the scheme now before it is only
a basis for a new negotiation, which can as well
be undertaken without a programme devised tiyl
the Senate as with one. The boundary will be
contracted to about half the limits of Gadsden's
Agreement, and the amount of money to be. aid
will be either seven or ten millions of dollars.

The Senate yesterday amused itself for two
hours with the South Carolina bill for. releasing
railroad iron from duty for three years, which is
equivalent to a proposition for a total and per• .
nutrient abolition of the dqty. It wait debated at'
considerable length, to, as be perfectly under.:, 111
steed to bo a bill fur favoring and enriching huge
..railroad corporations, and then postponed for
two weeks, which amounts to a rejection of the,
project, 'in Into. Mr. Seward made an able'
40te of the financial situation of the country,
and showed ionclusively that the building of rail I
roads might be stimulated to a dangerous extent.
Had wo not so many other questions demanding
our whole attention, the - financial signs of the
times would be admitted to be te most important
topic.. } It in evident that the gold crop of Cali

year, amounted to $80,000,000 there Is no good
reason to bope that it will- in ISL 4 exceed $50,-
