Cien.:Cul lom, of Tennessee, no Jimmy Jones, but a live Whig from a live and steadfast Whig State, to day electrified the House by a speech, in which he tore the veil from this project and from its authors, and exposed it first as a monstrous de-. fortuity, and next as an imposture and a hum bug: Corporal 111CDonaliFit blast Against the 1 North, its freedom =of speech and of the press; its pastors, and its tone of liberty, has been heralded by the organs of Slavery, whose tool he . is, for the last mouth as a phillippic at which fanatics would tremble. He has fired his squib and will be paid by the administration in some petty place at the end of his term. Gen. Cullom, in noble contrast, spoke for the honor and best interests of his section against the clamors and tricks of demagogues, and in con- tempt of an administration which has dared to pronounce the pains and penalties of executive displeaiure against all opponents of their first "great measure." He has earned the respect and admiration of every honorable mind, and re ceived the hearty applause of almost the whole House during the delivery and after the close of his speech. In the name of his State and his constituents he repudiated the whole thing as a shameful attempt to bribe the - South to the Per petration.of a wrong upon the North, and an act of infidelity to the Union., Dr. Glynis demonstration in favor of the Pvt.- cifie Railroad, yesterday, was only moderately successful. The Senate Chamber was a wilder ness while he was'talking, and the snug little recess, where refreshments suitable to senatorial palates are served, was attended by a full and attentive auditory. The Senator urged the im portance of the Work as a military road, and its necessity as a commercial avenue and a bond of political connection between the extremes of the East and the -West. The fact is, the Pacific railroad has become, as I expected it would, a sectional interest. It is alleged, not truly as I believe, that the only route is one outside of the United States, for which a right of way must be bought at an ex pease almost equal to half the cost of construc tion. The road for which the patronage of the genral government is most strenuously urged, is to be a South Carolina, Texas, and Mexican work. The Gadsden treaty was made for the Texas railroad, and to that end the 11. S. treasu ry. was - CO be emptied of the accumulations of years. Let us buy no foreign route, but give the extreme north and south and the centre an equal chance by offering donations of land and a reasonable mail contract, to any one or all of these routes. There is no flange lin the world that more than ono of them will be built, and let that section acquire and enjoy the advantage of the Work latch shall first display enough of en terprise and energy to build it—we all ought to be and will be content The Gadsden treaty was again on the tapis yenterday, and was revived in a shape in which it may ultimately be adopted. The leading South ern advocates of the measure, declared in a very moving and solemn manner that they wishEd for no extension of territory. They wanted tV , set- - tie disputes with Mexico, to remove all flanget of war, and to secure the route for a railroad. ' To this end Mr. Rusk proposed the insertion of . a clause which should leave the exact boundary line to be settled by a future survey and the re port of engineers, who should report on what line n railroad could be built , and therefore commis sioners should establish the boundary just to the southward thereof. This seemed so fair that it was adopted. Next, in consideration of the fact that we give * lip one kali' or more of - the Gads . - den, it Was Partially agreed to diminish the sum to be Paid to $7,000,000, and at this point anal journment was, mored and carried. To-day Mr. Mason moved to go into executive session with a view to continue the work so hap pily advanced yesterthy, but the Senate refused —ayes 17, noes 2:3, the majority apparently pre ferring to proceed with a bill taking duty off of railroad iron for the next three years. So, after . all, it may be questioned whether there is a re quisite majority for the treaty in any corm.... A hawk, one .day, pounced upon it, and bore it gently away. The conceited creature was delighted with the attention from so powerful a stranger, and greatly enjoyed en elevation so mach higher than its own clumsy wings had ever been able to reach. Timing a robin, in its ascent, it cried out with great glee, "I r.de robin I I ride - ro bin!". But the howk, perhaps fearing the loss of its prey, perhaps annoyed by the cries of the chat, tering foreigner, pressed its claws a little beyond the feathers of its charge; when it makes the air ring with its' changed notes; ' , thug it, bow ho pinches! hang it, how he pinches I" I do not vouch for the entire : troth of this story, but I give it, as I have heard it, to illus trate tho - ups and downs of Jesuit experience in -the. politics of our country. The Jesuits meet the same difficulties, and make the tame mis takes that other foreign politicians do, in mana ging ouvAmerican politics and people. For many years, the Press, regarding Roman ians as • re igloos institution, were accustomed to treat it with respect, as they did other forms of aristianity. The ignorance and conceit of the • Jeguits led them to imagine themselves ,greillavorites with the Press; and with poorly disguised contempt of the denizens of the coun try, they sang out, ride, robin! I ride, robin.' Then they plunged into politics, shocking allow free, native predilections, by their monstrous sympathy with Austrian and Botnan tyrannise, and by their malignant caltunuies against the martyrs of European liberty. The press, the free and patriotic press, exposed and;denounted their treachery to freedom ' and their affinity with absolutism; They' felt the pinching presence of this strong-tsioned guardian of liberty, and raised the piteous cry of ." hang it; how he pinches ! Lang it, bow he pinches!" Again, when the Jesuits thought they bad the demagogues in their interest, and stupidly mis took" the. demagogues for the , people, they in stincti'rely fixed their eyes on e sc hool fund, thinking it Would be a very nice thing to have the public Money appropriated to their sectarian schools: Their buoyant hews, Inflated by the tiatterieg'promise from a desperate politician, hero and there,, set - them to singing, "Pride, robin, ride, robin." 'But wheat, in every In- Stance where the lassie. wee made, they were beaten, and even old, , forgotten provisions that might be perverted to their purpose, were, as in our own legislature, repealed; their song is speedily changed to he (Morose, "hang it, how be pinches," " hang it, Lod he, pinches.' , When the l'ope's first nuncio (and the last) came to our country; and received the courteous treatment which we give to all 'strangers% when he was invitdd to the soirees of Governors'and to the halls of legislatures,_the delighted Jesuits sung out, "I ride, robin." But when the charac ter of the man 'became known, with some ink lings of the purposes of his mission; when cath olic congregations laughed at his threats of ex communication, when pantomimes of his deSerta blazed in theetrects of our cities; the Oilman of indignation and' the hisses of contempt that a free people turn upon the poor Nuncio almost drown the piteous railings.of the Jesuits, "hang it, hew he plzate,e." The London Correspondent of the Now York Journal of Commerce, writing in reference to the effect in France of the disclosure of the Se cret Correspondence with Russia, says: "The indignation of the French knows no bounds, as is evinced by the sentiments express ed by thy journals throughout the whole of Franco; while the honorable conduct of England is now the universal theme, and we are not like ly soon to hear the epithet .'perfirle Albion." The only exception to this appears to be a "fusionist organ," L' Union, which has been mischief-mak ing by throwing doubts on the good faith of the English Government; and emissaries of the same party Mire been darkly hinting that there may exist other' documents which have not yet been made public, which wiWlehl against the conduct of England." He continued to grow worse, under the treatment of physicians, and in ten days lime, had wasted away to a mere skeleton. His death - was expected hourly. Hearing of the cures performed upon children by McLane's Ver. rnifuge, Mr. C. procured a bottle, though the at tending physician laughed at the idea of the pa tient having worms. A dose was administered on Saturday morning last, and the next day the child passed filly-seven worms, varying in length from coven to fourteen inches. From that hour he commenced improving, and it is now appar ently mi hearty as any child in the city—being altogether relieved also from the whooping cough, the Vertnifuge having, it seems, cured bulb dis eases.
