[MING COMPAXICB.—The citizens of. Pitts
burgh have been largely engaged, for many
years, in successful mining operations cf Coal,
Iron, and Copper. Our people were among the
Bret to appreciate the immense value of the Lake
Superior Copper country, and have been among
the most snocessful adventurers into that region
of =told wealth. We understand that there is
a project on foot to organize a Company for the
mining of lead, in the mineral region of Wiscon
sin. A situation, remarkable for its mineral
value, producing lead, zinc andeopper, can be
secured mfterms exceedingly favorable, and but
a small amount of capital will be- requited to
cantle it to yield, it is believed on good data,
quite handsome dividends. We have been per
mitted to examine reports and affidavits from
high authorities in - trach matters, asserting, on
practical and geological data, the immense value
of the mines proposed to be made the basis of
the new Coinpany. When the project is further
matured we will refer to it again. .

FROM WASHINGTON
Correspondent* of the NUT Pitisburch Cluotto
Wasnisorom CITY, April 7th.
The death of the Gadsden treaty in the Senate
°settee few regrets. The only mourners are the
disappointed agents and speculators in claims,
who see in it the final failure of their schemes
of spoliation. The treaty may now be pro
' nounoed deceased, though tot formally rejected..
The period for its ratification is limited to the
17th of April, end a convenient mode of de
spatching it would be to postpone action until
after that date. That course will probably be
adopted. The Senate to-du refused to go into
executive session, which is an indication that
'they did not think it worth while to take say
further trouble in the premises. It has already
sustained a dozen defeats on incidental votes.
From the most decisive of these it appeared
that the final vote would be twenty-three for to
twenty-two against the treaty.
'I noticed yesterday the comparative thkaness
of the House. I To-day - the same scarcitraf - Alie
raw material was observed, and it was found
difficult to cAlect a quorum previous to .geing
into Committee of the Whale to listen to speech
es on Nebraska. The illness of members is one
cause of this. Mr.:Howe, of your district, has
been unable to attend the sittings of the House
for several days. lie is suffering
from what ap
pears to be an attack of pneumonia, a disease
which is unusually prevalent among us this
spring. I learn with pleasure that he is much
better this morning, though not yet well enough
to leave his room.
The House wasted an hour to-day over Mr.
Churchwell's bill for sending the mails between
the Atlantic and Pacific coasts by a lightning
line on silver wires. It shoUld hose been enti
tled a "notable project for the bursting of boil
ers, blowing up of passengers, and the general
cleaning out of the national treasury upon an
tkrzly new and original principles." The plan
increase the pay for carrying open the high
pressure principle as the time consumed' is re.
dared.' r Thus for a weekly mail from New Or
le.
ans to San Francisco, carried in twenty.four
days, Mr. Ohurchwell's bill proposes to pay ten
thousand dollars, but for a mail carried with
the same frequency, in ten days, two millions of,
dollaripar minion will be paid! Now this 'is a
good deal worse than nonsense. The true System
is to ascertain as nearly as practicable the time
in which the malls can be carried with regularity
and then to give contracts at fairly remunerative
paces for the service. The 'pending bill is
merely a bonus for recklessneia. It ism?' of
tluit discipline on board ships, which cut jects
the last man 'who goes aloft in obedience to an
order, to the rope's end, as if there must not al
ways be some bat num.
Mr. Forney Is about to resign the Clerkship
of the House. All the tears shed on the- ems-
Mon will be extracted by peeled onions. It is
said that he is going into the Union. The Douse
cannot lose by the change, and it may with per-,
feet candor be said, that .the Union cannot be I
-made less respectable • than it now is. lion.l
Richard di. Young, E. H. Thompson and B. B.
French are amen the cOmpetitors in prospect.
The Committee of Ways and Means have re
jected nearly all the important amendment) of
the Senate to the deficiency bill. These. ace,
half a million of dollars for the Washington
Aqueduct;-one hundred thousand for a bridge
over the Potomac, between Maryland arid Vir
ginia, and about $400,000 for Custom Thaws
ehiefiy in the West find Interior. This is a re
auction 'of ft million' of dollars at one fell swam.
And, even in-that shape, the HOMO appears to
care nothing at all about the bill, and if it passes
at all, I do not believe it will become a law much
' before the end of the fiscal year. What a com
ment ripen the legislation of Congress.
The crushing defeats experienced by the ad
ministration and by .the faction of repudiators in
the Democratic.party, has not intimidated them.
Theyitillpressforward to the perpetration of
their iniquitous designs. The Nebraska bill ii
still to be lb - reed down ,the throats of its oppo
nents, if, by any meani,:a majority can be found
or - manufactured to .carry it through. Mr.
Preston made a moving appeal to the liardshells
to come up to its support, praying
, therOn very
humble and .affecting tones, at least to,allow the
bill to fume up for a vote. This can only be
done by setting aside other measures 'wbich do
not involve questions on which. the country is
hopelesidY divided, which do not outrage the
feelinge and infringe the chartered rights of the
North. The pathetic adjurations of thelNehms-
Wiz will not be heeded. If the bill is to he
passed: they must themselves do the work and
take the responsibility. Col. Preston declared
his opposition to the Clayton amendment, the
meaning of which is, that Col. Preston, however
aordons to introduce Slavery into Nebraska, does
not care to array against him in one solid pha.
Linz the German 'Votes of Louisville.
Llibbard and Ingersoll look blue since the elec
tions in Connecticut and Rhode Island. They
now see that the sands of their political life have
nearly run out. Let them lie in that ditch
which they , have digged for themselves.

poesessed of notarial certificates, 'which they
think are American passports, but the United

discontent of the holders. I was in the same
hotel with a Hungarian colonel, and I asked him
what he intended to do with his certificate from
a New tork notary. Ho replied, "I ehallalways
carry it about me, and if taken prisoner shall
produce it, and claim the rights of an American
citizen." I became acquainted daring my two
weeks' sojourn at Marseilles with the Russian
Consul, a very able and intelligent man, who, in
answer to my inquiry on the subject, assured me
that not the least attention would be paid to any
document of the kind, and that every one of
these people that fell in the bands of the Rus
sians would inevitably be shot immediately. I
ascertained enough to be convinced that the Rus

characters thus on their way to Turkey, and of
course that his government was kept well advised.
