.Grand Prairie has been chartered to take a cargo
of Balk Meats froni Naples and Meredoaia, on
the Illinois river, to Pittsburgh. Sho wilt load
immediately.

been sold to-Messrs. Daniel Emerson and R. O.
Underwood c who will continue her in the New
Orleans trade as heretofore.. The price paid was
$12,000, cash.
Hann Aitomen.—The lowa left the Seranek
No. 2 aground near Nowlledrid, with her stern
entirely out of water, and the whole boat almost
high and dry. The water was felling at the rate
of one foot per day. The Saranak has onboard
709 to 800 tons of freight,—St. Louie h'eter.
Loss or rue STILMER, MONOO9.—WO are lit-
deb* to the clerk of the steamer Duke for the
following particulars of the loss of the steamer
Monroe: The Monroe left this port on the' 4th
that , for Tao, River, heavily loaded with dry
goods and groceries. On Monday morning, the
27th Inst., between 2 and 3 o'clock, she struck a
log at Cowpon Point, five miles above Natchez,
and sunk in loss than five minutes. Boat and
cargo a total loss. There were no passengers on
board. Seventeen lives were lost, viz: the mate,
a negro - woman belonging to Mr. Partee, and fif
teen deck bands arid - firemart.-3. 0. Rul.

A petition from sixty of the most prominent
mh.ehants of Allegheny city was read, praying
Councils to take some action in regard to rail
road connections, so that the great cost, Mean
veidence and distance, to which they are now
subjected in receiving their goods may be reme
died, and that their goods may be landed in Al
legheny. The depot where their goods aro land
e'd is some three miles from their places of busi
ness. Referred to the Railroad Committee.
In Common Councils a resolution was offered
subscribing 5,000 shares - to the capital stock of
the Connellsville Railroad was presented.. (len.

Thesante defendant plead guilty to assault and
battery upon Therrien Morrison. He was senten
ced to two months.in the County jail.•

tery, upon oath of James Clark.. The defendant
in this case was a contractor on the Allegheny
Valley Railroad, and the prosecutor in his em
ployment. The latter burst into tears while tel
ling his story in the Court room. They are both

ConurrrEn.—A man named John Fox was
committed by Alderman Lewis, chafged by a
man named Slade with being connected with the
recent murder on the Allegheny Valley Railroad,
for which Edward 'McCall is now in jail.
CONTEIIPT.-A man named Agnew was-com
mitted to jail for refining to testify in the Crimi
nal Court, yesterday.
CAPlAP.—William B. Donaldson was committed
to jail yesterday morning, on a cog*, to an
swer a charge of tearer and conversion.
SOLDIEIIO.-A company of dragoons left on
the Philadelphia yesterday morning, for Jeffer
son Barracks, 'near St. _Louis. It was company

been appointed Principal Assistant Engineer on
the l'ennsylvania Railroad, having charge of the
Western Division, from Altoona to Pittsburgh.
Ile takes the place of Mr. Barnes, who is Chief
Engineer on the Connellsville Railroad.

into the steamer W. It. Clifton. on .the Mississip
pi,_neur Cairo, yesterday,, the latter was tank to
hurricane deck. Iler passengers and crew were
saved. The Clifton was bound from Louisville fo
Nov Orleans with a fall load.
The opening of the Ohio and Mississippi
road to Aurora was celebrated yesterday. There
were
. 1200 invited guests, which left on three
trains, and had a grand banquet at Aurora. Sev
eral speeches were ,delivered, and there was great
rejoicing and firing of salutes. '
