Since our last election!, State and Federal,
And been held, so that no functionary had been

jest, the public mind had been shocked by the
t introduction of bills into Congress for the organ
ization of the territories of Nebraska nod Nan,,
sas, - which contained a feature undreamed of in
all former contests. Those bills were now refer
red to the Committee of the Whole, -end as 'we
were in Committee of the whole, we would try
(bent. Ile had no objection to organizing these
territories. A bill for this purpose pissed one
branch of Congresa lust year. The objection to
the prtisent bill was, the sage fixed upon it by
suithbr.• It proposes in ixpress terms, to make
void the Missouri Compromise. Why is this 2 Its
apologists say, it is not done to extend slavery.
There was not a mon in the borders of this great
State, that could endure the the testnf public
judgment an hour, I,hat did not plant himself en
that position.
Now he would put this pregnant question,,—if
the injunction against slavery is hot taken off for
the purpose of admitting.slavery, why take it off
at all ? If it is not done to engraft slavery on
those territories? Bid you ever know them to
violate their own interests—do they more to
emancipate ? •No, rather to extend, to foster, to'
give it larger borders. This then was an honest ,
andstion,:—.why is this. injunction against slavery
to be removed ? Ile would give any apologist of
the bill a week to answer this!fuestion, and they
might have Locke or Logic in their counsels , ' 11
the while.
But he would do northern defenders of the bi
the justice to state their reasons for their course.
These 'reasons were:
let. The Missouri Compromise was unconsti.
tetanal.
. 2nd. It would extend the area of freedom,'and
popular sovereignty, by bending tho subject over
to the people of the' territory.
Lot us 'dell' these reasons. First as to its con..
stitutionalityt The Missouri Compromise 'via
of the same class of legislation as the ordinance
of 1787, that was framed by the framers of the
Constitution. Now, he thought. the - men who
nnulo the Constitution understood it as well as
those who merely look at it..- Ilid'nt Thomas
Jefferson, - who never spoke or wrote but to rea
son, or reasoned but to conviction, underitand
the constitution r When little folks now say ho,
did not, I hesitate; I should like to knew .where
.they got their learning. It they g7duated off a
free and easy stump, as their opinion is,
worth considering. Certainly then; the ortli-'
Hance of 1787 was constitutional; for it was made,
by the same men that Made the constitution:—
Now the scholars of these mune men 'made the
Missouri • Coniprotuise: TheYyture latch men as

Since, then, the men wh nuads the 'Missouri
Compromise took lessons from those who made
the Constitution,:find who enacted eimilar
lotion in the o rdinance of 1787, the -inference
was clear that ifwas constitutional.
As to the weight of authority, it was all, in
favor of its constitutionality. The South made
the Missouri compromise, and who ever Iteard.of
