I Badger seised the occasion to -
indulge bilis fa

had expected •to receive for presentation this
morning a remonstrance against that dense of
the Nebraska hill, which declares that the repu
diation and repeal of the Missouri compact
i should not operate to revive and restore the old
law of colt:minl slavery: then went on to

I successful, insomuch that he eintsiiiM4 - espy
I body who heard him that he. had, for his part,
punt the prosier:Om a cheat s and a fraud and hod.
I offered it in a spirit of the basest hypocrisy and
deception. As a specimen of legal casaistsy, his
speech to-day was 'conttrtteted upon the exact
model of the one in vihiOihe undertook to refine
and fritter imam Missouri, compromise as bo
contract., Badger has the mind and the mortis
of .spotty lawyer ;acute and quick in seizing
email points, incapable of undvrstanding a
principle; unscrupulous and shameful .seiz

found, anl , ready to join in any cry,

an adversary he is exactly the *person whom
Douglass and his employers would have selectid

And this is the man whom Sewithd, Wade, Sum

ably supported for confirmation to the Supreme
Bench. Their generous confidence in his "teas
and integrity he repays with falso accusations,
their earnest defence of him from the charges

With insolence and ribaldry.
Mason, Butler, and others continued the de
bate hi nearly the same strain, contending with
Badger that the amendment was alike without
object and without fermi—demonstrating that it
tiffected'aothing.in the bill, and left the repeal of
. the Missouri Corepremise what it appeared to be:
and was intended for, namely, an outrage on the
orth,":a great gain to the South, a vile conces
sion to Slavery, and a base and scandalous vio
lation of national!feith. This, in •ordatance, is
what these exponents orSouthern opinion proved
the Nebraska bill to be. They laughed to. scorn
the ides that by waiving the re_nactmertt of the
French and Spanish law of Slavery, they surren
dered any claim to the complete legal establish
ment of Slavety in the territories covered by the
bill. Mr. Butler became eloquent and sanguin
ary in describing the wars which we were to
wage against the rest of the world for extending
the Slave territories of the South.
Mr:Stuart, of Michigan, of whom some hopes
were entertained at one time that he would not
prove as miserable a dough-face as Geu. Lewis
Cass,. took quite a different view of thisinterest
ing matter. lie .attempted to rescue the Badger
amendment front the hands of its unnatural step
father. It was not, he said, Badger's amend
ment at all. It was his own, Stuart's lie had
placed it in Badger's hands only to gib ri
.for ft
SotAern support. He meant it to signify and
have the force of. just whit it expressed.. Ile
said, in effect, that it was the only feature of the
bill.which he approved--that so far front the bill
being en offering from the North, as had been
most falsely and impudently stuted-4he thing
could find nobody in, or from that section; who
would own it.
The . subject- dropped 'only when the-'orer_
charged bile of the South had discharged itcelf,
andwhen, it was supposed, - that the North
been sufficiently admonished of the dreadful
consequences that must ensue, if- the rascally
scheme failed.
In the Rouse, Mr. Campbell, of Ohio; made a
movement having for its object the extraction
from Sam' Medary and other gOntlimen, of the
money obtained.by them as their outfit on ' mis
sions to which they have been appointed but have

Campbell proposed a resolution directing the
combaters ori . the judiciary to enquire as to the
o
best mode f proceeling in thme interesting cases.
Many leading Democrats were kindly officious in
suggestiag to Mr. Campbell that the subject was
so important as to deserve a select committee - and
thathe ought to be plated at the bead of it.. Mr.
