The following lines are penned by a min of
Southern birth, whose interests whether of pro

momentous question was forced upon . the Cottn•
try for adjustment whether it should he allowed
to carry slaves and hold ,thent there. The dif-
Scully of a settlement was : increased by-the
course which had been pursued systematically
,by Many citizens in the North and West, for a
number of years, under the influence of a mists-
':hen zeal. They flooded the bibles of Congress 1
- with memorials calling upon them to pass meas
ures which they hnd no constitutional authority
to do and which the Southern people deemed of
fensive and even dangerous to - them. They
used the Post Offices, they paid .emissaries to
,scatter . ffisiontent among Orr' slave population,

by Mexico, it would so pus into the poasession
of the - United States, and continue sabject to the
same, unless the said conditions . yore changed by
Congress; and accordingly several attempts
were made to induce Congress to interefere.—
Some proposed to extend the line pf the Missou

latitude westward to the Pacific; others to de
clare that the hula seas acquired by common ef-
forts end treasure, and' all citizens had equal'
rights to retenve there with their property,. but all I
snob propositions were voted down. Northern
members could not then be induced to yield any
thing by which they would sanction the intro
duction of slavery there. But southern pride,
them - unusually sensitive, was 'also saved the humi

Congress would do was when' Mr. Souk's motion
to allow; that if at theltimefor applying fee admis

a violent wind, nt Black ilawl:Poiut, forty miles
below Satchel, when at about 10 minutes past S,
she struck what is supposed to have been a tree'
washed in from the bank by the late high water.
Mra..liedgood, the wife of the pilot, waS with.her
