Ou Thursday last, corn THOUSAND of the citi zens of Massacheisetts. gathered from every part of the State, assembled in Faueuil hII in sol emn Convention, to consider the Nchraska out .rage, and held three semiotic. If we: hail room. we would transfer to our columns the whole of the brilliant and glowing speeches delivered on the occasion. We mueit, however, content our.' selves with extracts. The first speaker was Hon Amos Tuck, of New Hampshire_ lie clos ed his eloquent remarks as "In this connection my recollection goes hock to a few years age, in this city of Boston, when the, citizens of New- Hampshire held a celebra tion at the Fitchhurgli depot.. One of the most distinguished sons of New Hampshire presided on that oreasion—Daniel Webster lApplause.l At that time Kossuth was a prisoner in Kutaiyeb. in Turkey. The eyes of the whole world were fixed upon the Hungarian refugee. Russia was seeking for his hiosuP RtlsSia, wee demanding of the_Porte that Kossuth be delivered up to be ex ecuted. Os thatoccasion, after cernmenting up on the circumstances of the occasion, Mr. Web ster the following linguage: "There issome ~ .::sc.~.~aLs_ ,~,F~...,~c.F:~;%.iii*~'.uM^~.,'w..:.is+='p;u.::.cr.,.,---_"...., ._ ...~u.Mxum,,'~ei~,~u'~~°girt ~t3S-'`i ~~,~.H ~~~rh-~~~~~ 1 ,_ ...»,tea-.'+w. ~ I > grief of woe—among the millions who were ex piating the Rijn done in the body—could I find one who had proposed to surrender a mighty realm. plighted to Freedom, to the fatal domin ion of 'Slavery. ' Dante wrote of medieval crimes t—lind ho lived in the blaze of the Nine teenth Century--iu Christian and. Republican America—his inferno would have revealed an other departmeut, inhabited by those who repu diate the sacred obligations of theirfirthers, and sell the domain of Liberty by the square mile. (Loud cheers.) We don't comprehend this mat- - ter—what we want is a realizing sense of its atro city—hut for the last decade we have become so accustomed to the triumphs of the slave power, that this measure, which a few years ago would have armed the people with bristling steel, now finds us timid, disheartened, and almost power less. We have been preparing for this result— ..pe saw that vast and illimitable Texas come into [he Union against our wishes, but acquiesced with a criminal readiness—wesaw a war waged for Slavery propngandism, and murmured for a while, then shouted the hen of Buenk,Vista in to the Presidential chair!: We have heard that Slavery was bartering-fdf the island of Cabe at the Court of Madrid, and we called it manifest destiny. We have seen . the President of the United Statei‘promise to reward 'Spanish pirates for robbing men and women 'of their natural rights, and are dumb. Yes: we have seen a man seized in our very streets, manacled by our officials, refused protection by our courts of jus tice, shipped from our wharves, and consigned to untold horrors that surround a recaptured slave, and our moral torpor teas not been shaken off— the deadly calm that broods over us has scarcely been disturbed. Some of us thougfit we had sounded the lowest depths of shame. We all know that when the roof that canopies Faneull Hall resounded night after night with the trend of soldiers, who were prepared to da escort for Thomas Sims from - the Court-house to.the brig Acorn, that verge of infamy had been reached. We flattered ourselves that the Compromises- pf 1830—the filthy sediments which were conceded in the Union-saving filter—were the very dregli I of degradation. They were considered the country over RR a finality—and, from the amber regions of Maine to the cotton fields of Mississ ippi, paems were shouted that the harmonial age had arrived, the millenium of hunkerism was es tablished, and the question of Slavery forever settled. Settled! eettlesll—yes, the appetite of the wolf is settled, when gorged with the flesh of its prey,. But wait till the morrow, and the re newing appetite of the beast, eharpened by the remembrance of his late repast, will lead him again to the fold, to seek. for new plunder. So with Slavery—it is unsatisfied—it hungers for new prey—its insatiable appetite will never know abatement till its conquests are co-extensive with the conquests of the nation—till its rights shall be admitted wherever the footprints of an American is found. And therefore it is that we now see it, with a ruthless and zacrilig ions hand; while vet the sods are fresh upon the graves of Clay and Webster. forcing down the harrier whirls guarded this vast region of Nebraska, iu order - that the oppres sor of the African may enter and roam there at his will. And under what pretext is thie gigan tic outrage prosecuted! We have ono argument i irate ailed to allay our fears, and one which ap-.I peals to our convictions. Of the subterfuge with regard to the supersedure of the Missouri Com promise, I would not insult the Cl/TUMOR sense of any man by calling it an argument. Base as were the Compromises of 1850, they were not chargable with such on offence, and none but, the bribed and pensioned miscreants -L-those who hold and those who lust for office—aro sufficient ly brazen to mention it. But we are told, in the first place, that slavery wilt never go to'Nebnis. ka—and no evil consequences will ensue frouthe passage of this bill. The cry of no danger has been heard before in this country. It is a fe tallier sound, add as delusive ne it is familiar.— In 1815 we were told by those who wished the annexation of Texas, that slavery would not be increased either in power or extent thereby, for the admission would occasion emigration from the mother slave Stated, and drain the evil from Virginia and Maryland—as shivery passed south ward and vrestward, it was to vacate the border States. Did it prilve so! Does Virginia rank to day among the free Comninnwealtits. of America! So far from this being the case, her property has become so valuable that she clings never so te naciously to her republican business - of trading marketable humanity. And so jealous is she of this peculiar institution, that she confines pure and benevolent women in the home .of the felon for teaching the slave to read. In 1830 we were told that the Wilmot ProviSo waSunnecessary to the pacific territories, for - the potent hand of Na-, mare had - placed there everlasting 'Otani:diens against shivery. Now, there lives not u num, pos- Sessed of common seuse, in the country, whodoes not know that, were it not for positive statutory prohibitioes. this hour would see thousands of slaves bending over the precious sands or toiling within the golden- mountains of California.— [Cheering.] Why will not Slavery go to .Ne braska ? Are there any preventives, Either from its soil, its climate, or geographical position d - these favor the settlement. of a large portion of it by slaveholders, and as the presump tion that they will so settle it NO have only 'the assertion of Senator Donglea and the surmise of Senator Everett. Freedom in Nebraska will have no natural legislative defence : only the empty predictions of aspirants for the Presidency stand at its portals to shield and protect it. But if sla very will not go north of 36° no', why disturb 'the Missouri Compromise by the passage of this hill ? Oh, says the Boston Post, we wish to establish the. great. Democratic principle, that the people have a right to select-their own insti tutions. I believe in State Rights, but' em • not. i yet a convert to the. Teriitory Rights doctrine= l, the right to allow a few hundred adventurers to fastest the clam of Slavery upon Nebraska. I believe that the territories are the creatures of Congressional legislation, and It is incumbent upon that branch of (lovernicient to breath into them the vigorous and healthy life of Liherty„ and not the contagion and blight of Sievery.— Lot whether s'aquatter - sovereignty" should sap. plaint Congressional power over the territories is not tbe question to be discussed—it is of ne avail in this controversy—the supreme voice of the people, througlif theirpreventatives, have 71e declared that this Cerrito should be for ever free. They had the right a declare this—sand while Missouri remains a member of this Union,. by no rule of legit., b o y no code of lunar can thla declaration be invalidated: • This doctrine anon interientiow is fraudulent in fact; and vicidisin theory, for the very bill in which they pretend to have incorporated this, principle, dictates a government to Nebraska ; and, surely, Demo cratic institutions can never legitimately become the missives of Despotism. lam heartily glad that we now understand What this Administra tion audits minions ;menn by :Dimocracy--we have their definitions ui Mist:cll. Resolved, That the Constitution of' the United States confers upon Congress theright to "make all needful rules and regulations respecting the territory belonging to the United States," and Shit it is the duty. of Congress So to legislate for all the present and future inhabitants of the territories, as to carry out the purposes for which the Constitution was ordained and estab lished, namely, to "form 'a more perfect union, establish justice, . are domestic tranquillity, provide for the common defence, and secure the blessings of liberty." Resolved, that it would be wicked and impious for Congress, legislating for any territory, to Say to its inhabitants, "here ye may kill, here ye -may steal,"—so it is wicked and Impious to say "here ye may possess your neighbour, his wife, and his children, and make them as your .cat- Se." Resolved, That the so called Misranui Corgi-re mise act applied only to the Territory of Louis., inns, of which Missouri was a part ; that, in consenting to the admission of Missouri as Slave State, and in waiving the prohibition of Slavery South of 36° 30', tho North agreed to a wrong upon condition that the South.should do a right; and the North, having executed its part of the compact, now demands that the South shall keep its plighted faith. Bemired, That the proposition to open to Slavery 485,000 square miles of territory, which . the whole country. North and ,Booty t has solemnly pledged to Freedom, will furnish nes. proof of the foot of which we hare long warned the American people, that Slavery keeps no faith, regards no oath, and knows no law but Ito own fierce and brutal wilL Resolved, That this attempt to plant the accursed institution of Slavery in the heart of the . Resolved, That the territories of the United States are held in trust for the landless—for the laboring people of this country, and for the ref ugees from the oppression of the Old World; and we, therefore, protest against legislation which forever shuts out the actual settlers from Nebrao ka, except on condition of sinking him to the level of a slave. Resolved, That in this issue between Freedom and Slavery the South cannot shield itself be hind the pretence that this propoeitlotkia a boon tendered by the North; that the fifteen millions of Northern freemen have never authorised the slaveholding adventurer of Illinois, or other Pres; idential aspirants to squander their heritage. Resolved That the commercial interest of this country is deeply involved in the settlement of Kansas and Nebraska by freemen, whereby their unequalled resources, as the grain - bearing re gion of the American continent, may be faddy de veloped..
